Is your photo driving licence about to expire?
Is your driving licence valid?: 30-second check to save a £1,000 fine...
If you have a photographic driving licence I would advise you to check it, following the advice on the above website. Your paper licence may be valid until you reach the age of 70, but your photographic licence is only valid for 10 years from date of issue. It costs £20 to renew, but you could be fined up to £1,000 if you fail to do so, even if your paper licence is OK. I just thought I would warn everyone, and save you the expense of the fine. |

The DVLA will send a renewal reminder before the expiry date.

Most people aren't aware of it, so you are not alone, Cashy. Apparently, one third of all UK photo licenses are out of date. I thought a heads up might save people a lot of hassle and a shedload of money. Is yours due for renewal, or are you OK for now?

Re: Is your photo driving licence about to expire?
You can have unlimited free renewals for change of address. Yes, a reminder will be sent (if it hasn't been already), but it's useful information anyway, I think.

Re: Is your photo driving licence about to expire?
Another thing to be aware of is you have to inform the DVLA if you change address. You risk a £1000 if you don't.

changing address doesn't work - it still runs out after 10 years regardless. Just got my reminder the other day and I've only had this one for about a year since we moved here.

Re: Is your photo driving licence about to expire?
I didn't say that changing address would reset the clock, so to speak. All I meant was you can change your address with the DVLA free of charge and you will get a new photo license when you do tell the DVLA. It will still expire on its original expiry date though. I apologise if I didn't make that clear.

Re: Is your photo driving licence about to expire?
anyone know if a British driving licence (green paper , no photo) is still valid if you are not resident in the UK , and the UK address no longer used. Thanks
reason for query , its cheaper to get a rental car in the UK with a British or EU issued licence than using a foreign one sorry for thread wander ;) |
