Not going to happen, they become part of the family regardless so you're better not getting one in the first place if you don't want the heartache. Upsetting as it is it's all part of the package sadly, for all the joy & happiness there'll always have to be a price to pay.

Presume that is your Bella, the odd eyed beauty? She is lovely! The collar sorta goes with the sparkly loo seat, looks a bit like a halo! She is obviously growing fast and already very imprinted on you - that's what pets do, you can't help but get attached!

No unfortunately not Max, would love a dog, but it wouldn't be fair on the dog I couldn't take it out for walks or anything. My other half has had two dogs a Springer cross (barmy) and a liver Dalmatian, she used to bring them every weekend, but after the Dalmatian she hasn't had another one, but twas great fun when they used to come at weekends

No more he stands beside my leg
His eyes shiing so bright
Icould never outrun him
Though I tried with all my might

Then his legs grow frail and weak
His coat has lost its sheen
The joys we had in days gone by
Was like an obscure dream

I can see now me all ragged pants
He with wagging tail
Anyone who tackled us
Was guaranteed to fail

When I see a boy and his dog
I see the invisable tie
I remember well my little pal
Forgive me if I cry

Re: Pet Owners

growing up we had a couple of tabbys. I named one tess. She seemed to be most attached to me. We had tess for well over ten years. She used to hide in my bedroom at night, so mum wouldn't put her outside. I would wake up and she would be under the covers. :) She seemed to love sleeping under covers.

Once I felt something inside my bed by my feet-- I lifted up the duvet to find a dead mouse there!

On the day we had to have her put down-- I rang in work and my boss let me have a holiday. I found her and she was meowing mournfully. Constantly. She was walking really slow. It was obvious she was in a lot of pain. We placed her inside a box that had cushions inside and I sat with her from 5am till the vets opened. I was trying my best to comfort her, stroking her head and that stuff. If i had to get up to go toilet or something she would lift her head up and start the mournful meowing and the look on her face was like she was saying "where are you going, don't leave me like this"

Got her to the vets and he smelled her breath and told me her kidneys had failed. What happened next I would rather not write here. Just thinking about it again is upsetting enough.

I don't understand the rational behind the statement, you did say pets, so that could be any type of pet. Although if you get one and then partially ignore it then why get one in the first place.

The statement also moves across to getting a partner in life (I'm not saying as pets) If you are afraid you will become emotionally upset should a partner die before you, then should you treat them indifferently so you wont get upset later in life.

I think this type of emotional isolation makes for an isolated life, and to deny any type of companionship to save being upset later is a very sad situation to be in.
Open your heart to the possibilities, and enjoy the companionship of others.

This therapy session is now over and there is no charge if you act on my advice.

This post may be considered 'off topic' but I felt compelled to post it.

Lucozade contains -
Glucose Fructose Syrup (24%)

High-fructose corn syrup - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

....and scientific reasons for not injesting it -

Princeton University - A sweet problem: Princeton researchers find that high-fructose corn syrup prompts considerably more weight gain

"These rats aren't just getting fat; they're demonstrating characteristics of obesity, including substantial increases in abdominal fat and circulating triglycerides," said Princeton graduate student Miriam Bocarsly. "In humans, these same characteristics are known risk factors for high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, cancer and diabetes."

Like everything else in life, you have to take a chance, if my Bella dies, which she will eventually then i won't moarn her loss, i will celebrate it due to the fact i have good memories of her, why dwell on something that makes you feel down?

thats the thing though; Its easier to say that now that your Bella is still alive. :) of course we all deal with loss in our own way. Your way of a celebration is admirable.

I think claytoner40 should expand his argument rather than one line answers that I don't understand.
What was the reason for the original post, is there some sad story behind it all, can we help heal the hurt inside. We have various sections on here that could help. I run the "Not in touch with reality section" if you read some of my posts you will see that I am ideally suited to this role, and if I cant help then my assistant the 9 foot Duracell bunny could help.

Claytoner40 30-04-2012 22:13

You could've made that clear at the start. As you may have noticed from the responses a lot of people on here have pets & folk come on asking for help finding a lost pet, there was genuine concern & you were only having a laugh ?

Viz was/is a comic aimed at the adult (late teens early 20's) market, originated in the North East with characters such as Sid the sexist, the fat slags, Roger Mellie you see where it's headed.

They used to have a problem page/useful tips & suchlike, a satirical take on the red tops, the starting comment was such a "useful tip".

google Viz for a better idea.

No, not getting him mixed up if you read post 5 that explains it, sorry if I am coming across a bit terse, just trying to get an expansion on the original statement and not getting it.

I thought there was a back story, as the original post suggested a problem.

It turns out it was a humorous comment, but I didnt get it.

If only it was that easy, having had my 9yr old dog in the vets recently for an x-ray for a suspected tumour (all clear we think), its hard to not get emotional, upset.

Its like a family member being ill.

Re: Pet Owners

yes. "if only" i feel that too.

our(family) last dog that we had, started walking in circles constantly (not like a dog chasing its tail) turned out he had a stroke. Medicine stopped him from doing it and he actually got a couple years extra out of his life. Vet told us that he had lived a bit longer for a dog of his type. When we got the dog he had been mistreated very badly and it took us years to get him back into a normal life. He never did fully recover. He used to hide 70% of the time behind my 'dads chair' in the corner of the room.

Vet told us that he must have been kicked hard as he had broken ribs that had set wrong. Not sure what kind of dog he was. Looked a lot like the dog from the dulux adverts.

Re: Pet Owners

We are on holiday for a week in the Trossachs in Aberfoyle. Yesterday we went for a walk on the river bank. Max was walking in front and we stopped to talk to some people walking. When we looked around there was no sign of Max. We whistled and shouted . He always comes back, but this time he was nowhere to be seen. We heard a high pitched dog cry and then it went quiet , my wife panicked thinking something had happened to Max. We searched up and down the river bank . I heard another cry, I found him, he had slipped down a steep bank and could not get back. By this time my wife was in tears fearing the worst.I led down , grabbed his collar, pulled him up, he shook himself and was none the worse for his ordeal. This just goes to show that we do get attached to our pets.

Max, you're lucky having a Border Collie- the best dog/friend you can get. They are officially the most intelligent dog there is and I would have another in an instant but my wife thinks it would be unfair at our age- they are a dog that needs to be active and occupied.
We both miss ours.

Yes the one jumping through the hoop is my current dog Max taken on an agility display at Mytholmroyd. The one on my profile page is a painting by my friend Peter Sherburne who is presenting HM with a painting of a springer spaniel next week.
