Coffee (caffeine)
You may recall that I reported here a few years back that I had a sleep disorder, whereby I had an 'overwhelming urge to sleep' after every few hours of being awake.
At that time my doc's recommendation was 'Drink lots of coffee' - well I did, but it wasn't good advice. I became a coffee connoiseur and have three different kitchen gadgets for making it. I came to realise that I was a caffeine addict, when I decided that the three mugs full of cafetiere brew were my main reason for getting out of bed in a morning. As an old biddy of 70, I found that I was experiencing 'urge to frequently micturate' which is far worse than 'urge to frequently sleep'. Rather than accept the signs that urinary incontinence was pending, I began to explore its causes and cures, and lo and behold, a cause is my beloved caffeine ! I am undertaking a caffeine (coffee) withdrawl - it isn't pleasant. - a bit like flu with a hangover headache combined. I can see that I will need to wean myself off it gradually. I am having decaff ground coffee delivered tomorrow, which I will mix with my 'full strength' coffee- gradually reducing the caffeine in the mix. It is interesting to note that yesterday when I drank nothing but water I didn't have any 'mad dashes to the loo'. So despite any likely jibes about me being a pee artist and such like, I offer this experience as helpful to anyone with 'urinary old age problems'. |

Re: Coffee (caffeine)
Tea has caffeine too, but about half as much
"CAFFEINE PER 6-OZ. CUP, IN MILLIGRAMS Espresso (2 oz) 60-90 mg Drip coffee 60-180 mg Black tea 25-110 mg Green tea 8-16 mg Herbal tea 0 mg Oolong tea 12-55 mg White tea 5-15 mg Rule of thumb, a cup of black tea has *about* half the caffeine as a cup of coffee. Even decaf coffee has 3-4 mg of caffeine per cup. " Here is some info about affects on health http://www.hflsolutions.com/ne/free_...lems_Top10.pdf |

Re: Coffee (caffeine)
Coffee has always made me go to the loo a lot. I drink that Nescafe Espresso (nasty instant stuff). Two heaped spoons of it in a little glass cup with no milk (have you seen where milk comes from?).
I will probably have about 4 of them tonight at work so thats like 8 normal cups of coffee in a 9 hour period. I will still be tired driving home and will sleep like a baby (no not in a nappy) as soon as I get into bed. An hour after going to sleep I will be awake to use the loo. I blame the coffee but without it I don't think I would stay awake all night. I am in no way addicted to it as I drink very little at home. Usually have one in the morning and occasionally another during the day. |

Very interesting Margaret. My husband had to come off coffee and as you probably know the coffee here in Sicily is super strong. He's managed it without difficulty by drinking 'Orzo'. I just checked in the dictionary and in English , this is barley. It's not the white stuff you have in England, it's dark brown(malted probably) like coffee but apparently without the side effects. Don't know though,if you could get it over there. |

Re: Coffee (caffeine)
I don't really like coffee at all, except for the very occasional Cappucino after a restaurant meal. I drink tea if offered it socially but by choice always prefer a cold drink. I've never really understood the concept of tea being offered as a form of comfort, e.g. if someone's had a shock. To me it's just a drink plain and simple, designed to quench thirst. Also, if on holiday or on a day trip, I don't like spending a lot of time sitting around in cafes - it gets in the way of the sight-seeing!

Re: Coffee (caffeine)
I don't drink much coffee at all....I prefer Tea.....to anything..even when it is warm weather......I find it just as refreshing and colling as a cold drink.
Judith, I think the tradition of offering a hot strong cup of tea to those who have had a shock was to get warm sweet fluids into them.......shock causes your blood pressure to take a dip a hot strong drink gives you some fluid to boost your blood pressure. Please don't give hot, sweet, strong tea to anyone who had been involved in an accident...motoring or otherwise...it could compromise their hospital care. My caffeine score was 2...so I can do without it quite nicely. |

Re: Coffee (caffeine)
In winter it takes me 3 strong caffetieres of coffee to get through the morning at work - in the summer I can take it or leave it I'll have one caffetiere max.
I need the caffiene to wake up in the dark - sunlight does the same trick for me but since Im up at 6am in the morning I only get that a few months a year! |

During my caffeine withdrawl period I notice that my arthritic pain has increased.
- World of Caffeine I don't think I will be able to reduce my caffeine intake to zero because of this. |
