how do I get rid of cat wee on my carpet?

I have stupidly got another cat, had her 2 weeks, she's managed to scratch everything in sight, new wallpaper, my leather suite, new curtains, me, the other cat, but I don't want to get rid of her, she is 2 year old like my Bella, I got up for work yesterday morning and she had wee'd somewhere in the livingroom, and it stinks, I know it wasn't Bella marking her territory because Bella sleeps in my bedroom with the door shut, the cats are getting on now and I know the new cat (lady lemonade) will be trying to mark it as her own and all that.....so my problem is, how do I get rid of this awful smell? I know about white vinegar and I've already put down pure lemon juice, but it still stinks....HELLLLPPPP lol

PLEASE

Re: how do I get rid of cat wee on my carpet?

You need to find the place where the wee is......bare feet works well......unless it is a male cat and it is just spraying, in which case you have to trust your nose and treat the place where the smell is strongest.
A solution of bicarbonate of soda in water works well......sponge the area with the solution and sop up any moisture left behind with old towels.
You can sprinkle dry bicarb onto a place where the cat has wee'd...leave it overnight and then vac off. You may need to repeat this more than once to get rid of the pong.
Thankfully bicarb is cheap.
There are other commercial products on the market, but they aren't as cheap as bicarb.
Hope this helps Shaz.

Re: how do I get rid of cat wee on my carpet?

just noticed it isn't a male cat so it is unlikely to be spraying.

Lemon oil will stop the new cat from scratching your leather furniture...or it has always worked for me...but you need to make sure the cat does have something to scratch...so a scrathing post is a must.

Re: how do I get rid of cat wee on my carpet?

another way is if you know someone who has a steamer....either hand held or one of those steam mop things...the high power steam kills the bacteria that cause the pong.

Re: how do I get rid of cat wee on my carpet?

Thankyou Marg, I use bicarb all the time to get rid of smells in the fridge and on furniture etc, I bought a bottle of spray vinegar earlier and sprayed that, I took the carpet up and cut out the underlay underneath it that was smelling, I also sprinkled bicarb all over the corner where it is, I usually get my bicarb from Morrisons, where I THOUGHT it was cheap at £1.68, found it today at Aldi for 69p

Now my house smells like a pickle, but its better than stinking of cat wee I suppose

Margaret Pilkington 07-09-2013 18:18

Re: how do I get rid of cat wee on my carpet?

Aldi had a steam mop the other week for 30 quid, and while that might seem a bit expensive, it isn't when you look at what Argos and other places want to charge...and these are great if you have animals that sometimes have accidents...and they only use tap water so no harsh chemicals to go into the air or your fabrics.

My dad has one of those green steamer things, works lovely on my kitchen floor, I'll use that, thanx again

If the cat has a bed you wee in it, that will teach the little devil what it is like and maybe it won't do it on your carpet again.

I don't think 'lady wee' is as pungent as cat wee Russell :)

Re: how do I get rid of cat wee on my carpet?

I will accept your observations Margaret.
I have never had a cat.

Gremlin, do I reallý need to stoop as low as the cat? Lol, the smell went for a day and it was back this morning, its either done it again or it needs re-doing

Margaret Pilkington 09-09-2013 13:30

Re: how do I get rid of cat wee on my carpet?

Russell, I have had quite a few cats...so I think I know a bit about the subject.
Shaz, it probably needs doing again...get that steamer on the go!

I've only ever had one cat, by coincidence supplied by flashy. (Nice cat shame it had your attitude). ;)

However, I suspect that because you take your first cat into the bedroom then shut the door, the new cat is trying a dominance thing.
Either let it in the bedroom or shut both out, the new cat will learn it's place when your first one gets annoyed with it.
At least then you'll only have blood and guts to clean off the carpet.

no offence taken Russell...it would take much more than that to offend me.

we'll have less of the 'supplied BY' it was more 'supplied VIA' thankyou very much :D

Lady Lemonade decided when she got here to sleep on Reece's bed so i dont reckon the bedroom thing has anything to do with it, she just likes trashing my house....the bin, the wallpaper, the carpet etc

Margaret Pilkington 09-09-2013 18:03

Re: how do I get rid of cat wee on my carpet?

If Lady Lemonade can still smell we(and remember her sense of smell is far superior to ours) she will revisit the spot and wee again, mistaking that bit of your lounge carpet for the little girls room...so bi-carb it some more and steam it as well...then put a few moth balls down in the place(or a sprinkling of white pepper).......it should help.

If she still keeps visiting that corner, why no put a cat litter tray there, ond plonk her in it to show her. Otherwise shoot the bloody cat.

The blood would be harder to clean up...there is no such thing as a little bit of blood!

get rid of the cat

Margaret Pilkington 12-09-2013 14:33

Re: how do I get rid of cat wee on my carpet?

I could never do that.....I love my cat!
My husband drips on the pedestal mat, but I wouldn't get rid of him either.
We have to accept that with animals you sometimes get little accidents...and deal with them.

Re: how do I get rid of cat wee on my carpet?

Well...... I steamed the carpet, bought a huge box of bicarb, put that down, put a whole tub of white pepper down too, and she's done it again, twice, does anyone want a cat cos I give up

Re: how do I get rid of cat wee on my carpet?

Shoot it! Seriously though have you tried a litter tray to see if the cat will use it. I know you can get toilet training pads for dogs, but I have never seen them for cats

Re: how do I get rid of cat wee on my carpet?

i have 2 litter trays (cat toilets) she uses that, i have cut most of the underlay out now and steamed the carpet again, it's not smelling too bad at the moment, until she does it again

All this bother over a dammed cat, you already have one, why don't you get rid of at & cut your losses, is it really worth all that trouble.
Your just proving that cats don't have owners, they just have servants.

Retlaw, you have to be a cat lover to really understand...and you obviously aren't one...so it is pointless trying to explain.
(I say this with the greatest respect).

and you are right, you never really do own a cat.

Cats were once worshipped as gods. Cats have never forgotten this.:D

And here I am, eating breakfast on my front porch, sharing my bacon with Toby (he owns my neighbour) ... he likes his bacon with maple syrup.:alright: Life seems so much easier to handle when one shares it with animals: my dogs, my cats, Iggy the squirrel, and Raquel and Arbuckle the coons. A couple of nights ago, a young skunk crept onto the porch to munch on the food I put out for the strays. I sat VERY quietly. It ate and left without spraying. The smell of cat pee can't compete with skunk.:D If it becomes a regular, I'll have to come up with a name. Just hope that a cat or a coon doesn't come along and startle it.

Eric, you are so right.
About a month ago we had to have our elderly dog Gizmo put to sleep(the vet thought he had a brain tumour) it was one of the hardest things to do...and it was the kindest thing for him, but not for us.....the selfish thing would have been to bring him home and let him have bigger and bigger fits which left him unhappy and disoriented.
I only have one elderly cat now...I miss Gizmo - even though he had turned into a grumpy old burger.
Anyway, I think some animals have better personalities(even at their grumpiest) than some humans.

I envy you your little family of critters!

Can you not stop the cat going into the living room. We had same prob with one of our cats so we now make sure he can't get into the living area. Try putting her litter tray into kitchen, and make sure she can't get out, she will learn eventually.

Re: how do I get rid of cat wee on my carpet?

we have started shutting her out of the livingroom, her litter box has always been in the kitchen, i am beginning to wonder if this is the real reason why her previous owner gave her away
