Photo Number 1
Owd Bert will send me some of his old pictures from Accrington for everybody to see if they can identify the location.
http://www.accringtonweb.com/owdbert/1.jpg Q. Name of Street and closed Pub (white frontage). And how about the make and model of car. |
Re: Photo Number 1
gee looking at that it could be any street!!!! but I think it's round the bold street/ water street area????? Is that a garage at the top?
|
Re: Photo Number 1
I can name the Pub as The Colliers Arms, I think the street is Lee Street, and a guess at the car it could be a Morris Oxford.

Re: Photo Number 1
Elephant St?
Wolsley car? |
Re: Photo Number 1

i think the car is a wolsley ??? |
Re: Photo Number 1
Hi, I am almost sure it is Elephant Street, around the Birtwistle Street area of town.
What a smashing new section this could prove to be! Atarah |
Re: Photo Number 1
Looks like Willows Lane area. Reminds me of a street that often appeared in "Oranges are not the Only Fruit".

Re: Photo Number 1
I am now sure it is the 'Welcome Inn', 7 Elephant Street and this in fact was where George Formby's wife (Beryl) grew up. Her parents moved from Alliance Street. Baxenden to this pub.

Re: Photo Number 1
I was wrong with the name of the pub, I remember there were two Lion houses, The Welcome was on Elephant Street and the Colliers which was on Birtwistle Street, I should have known because we lived in Chapel Street round the corner. well done Atarah on the info about George Formby's wife, quite interesting.

Re: Photo Number 1
just found the Welcome Inn listed on a map
I always thought Beryl was brought up in Accy myself, but not according to this sitehttp://www.btinternet.com/~dajaca/bingham.htm Younger people might be interested to know Elephant St was so called because a circus elephant had died in the close by in 1845. |
Re: Photo Number 1
i think this is cheating looking it up on the net :-[
|
Re: Photo Number 1
The question wasn't about Beryl Formby, Mick, it was about the picture!!!!
Already new about the elephant, local knowledge. |

It was near Lee Steet at the bottom of Plantation St. Pulled down many moons ago.
|
Re: Photo Number 1
Most definitely Elephant street, Welcome Inn, and more than likely a wolsey. this section is a good Idea Bert! My first time on the forum, but I'll be back to check this out :)

Re: Photo Number 1
Good response everyone, and thanks to Owd Bert for this excellent section.
As many of you pointed out the street was indeed Elephant Street, between Plantation St and Birtwistle St. The pub was "The Welcome" and it was, as a few pointed out, a Lion Brewery pub. The car was a Wolseley 16/60 c1958 Model. |
