Re: Barbary Coast
Any of you lot remember that little hippie shop further up from the Castle/Dirty Duck? You could buy all sorts of stuff there..Oz magazine, grow your own waccy baccy kits, The Little Red Book (Thoughts of Chairman Mao), The Anarchist Cook Book, bomb making manuals..the lot. Fasinating place. They don't make 'em like that any more.

There was one up next door to the cinema slightly off the track what was that one?
|
Re: Barbary Coast
as jaysay says there were one or two rough joints, the "Sames Vault", Old Bank,Sun could get a bit iffy, but top of the pops without question in 60s to me was the "Legs" wi the legendary "Bob Cotton" in full flow, the County next door virtually was also a bit tasty.:D
|
Re: Barbary Coast
Yeah...I forgot about the County.
One thing is for sure...in those days men were men and women were tarts. Despite all the fun and games that went on inside, there was never any need to have bouncers on the door. Some of those old pub bruisers would be turning in their grave now seeing what goes on in friday and saturday nights in the town centre. |

Funnily enough, one of my first drinking joints in London - back in late '79/80 - was a Yate's Wine Lodge, in Mayfair of all places. It was just off Bond Street. You could spend three hours getting totally ****faced on Aussie wines, then buy a loaf of bread, a can of sardines and a pint of milk from behind the bar to go home and sober up with. |

Re: Barbary Coast
You sure about that, Jaysay? i did quite a bit of drinking around Blackburn about 73/4 before I left for pastures anew and I seem to remember Yate's was in the old arcade, which got pulled down a few years before. Or am I, through the past mists of alcoholic inhebriance, getting confused with another location?

The other Pub diagonally opposite, which now has the name Clitheroe Kates on the side is definitely what was The Old Bank, as far as i recall it was in a row of terraced property at some point, which will have altered how people remember it! Age does funny things to the mind, and i worked near there in the 70's early 80's and i think that there were buildings on both sides of what you see now, cant remember, what was on the corner next to it, where the grass is now. But i think at the other side, where there is the Car Park and Grass verge in front of the Co-Op Funeral Service, was a small row of terraces which might still have been a Funeral Parlour but a smaller concern than it is now! Taggy, I only came to East Lanc's in 1974 and I always picture Yate's Wine Lodge on Church Street on the right walking towards King Street, before it was the "Chinese" upstairs, I wonder if they moved there for a short time?

You are way off with Belper St. Baths. It is (still going) situated at th bottom of Belper st. off Cob Wall ,Whalley Old Road. about 300 mts from St. Albans Church.
Blackamoore Baths (girls only) was at the rear of King Georges Hall. Freckleton St Baths was off King St. . Freckleton St. was opposite what used to be the Elma Yerbugh pub. now a hire shop . |
Re: Barbary Coast
Pubs ... Vulcan, Jubilee, Ribbledale, George. Turn Right and at the bottom of St was the Swan, Sun and Thwaites or Saemes.
The Wine lodge was where Debenhams is opposite the Abbey. It moved to Church st.. Opposite the Cav was the Grosvenor Pub and there was a Chinese behind it down the ginnel |

Blakeymoor baths were in the basement of Blakeymoor school. I worked in that building for years while the baths were still open (council run). The college, who I worked for at the time, took over the baths when it closed. For years we used it as a storage area, but eventually it was converted into classrooms and staff areas. The pool is still there to this day, it was just boarded over. There's an access hatch in the middle classroom. I'll bet 99% of the students (and staff) that have classes in there don't realise there's a swimming pool below their feet. It must have been gas lit in its early days, as when we were converting it, I found an old gas mantle above a suspended ceiling. Colin |
Re: Barbary Coast
