Yes Cashy..i'm 95% certain, because i used to work round the corner on St Peters Street, and i also remember the Italian barbers Pasarini that you can also see in the photo. The more modern Red Brick building to the right, used to be a Youth Club/Community centre (West End) i think it was called. The Door on the Corner of the Pub has obviously been blocked up, and there's just the side entrace now down the side street. The Dirty Duck used to be a little further down that side side on the opposite side! I'm probably going to Blackburn tomorrow so will have a gander if i do!

Best Regards - Taggy

I always thought Legs 'O Man was the roughest one...even the best room was bare floor boards. I remember watching two ladies of the night have a cat fight in there one saturday...it drew a hell of a crowd of lads as they manouvered on the deck. It got so hot that we were getting pints of mild from the bar to sling over them just to cool 'em down, although they seemed to take no notice as each was intent on performing some pretty basic eye surgery on t'other.

There were one or two choice establishments in the old days Tealeaf in the Tap Room of Little Grosvenor the ceiling and walls were splattered with blood, sawdust on the floor and a spittoon in the corner:rolleyes:

Any of you lot remember that little hippie shop further up from the Castle/Dirty Duck? You could buy all sorts of stuff there..Oz magazine, grow your own waccy baccy kits, The Little Red Book (Thoughts of Chairman Mao), The Anarchist Cook Book, bomb making manuals..the lot. Fasinating place. They don't make 'em like that any more.

as jaysay says there were one or two rough joints, the "Sames Vault", Old Bank,Sun could get a bit iffy, but top of the pops without question in 60s to me was the "Legs" wi the legendary "Bob Cotton" in full flow, the County next door virtually was also a bit tasty.:D

Re: Barbary Coast

Yeah...I forgot about the County.

One thing is for sure...in those days men were men and women were tarts. Despite all the fun and games that went on inside, there was never any need to have bouncers on the door. Some of those old pub bruisers would be turning in their grave now seeing what goes on in friday and saturday nights in the town centre.

I think I managed to get one in there before they pulled it down..must have been about '71, I think.

Funnily enough, one of my first drinking joints in London - back in late '79/80 - was a Yate's Wine Lodge, in Mayfair of all places. It was just off Bond Street. You could spend three hours getting totally ****faced on Aussie wines, then buy a loaf of bread, a can of sardines and a pint of milk from behind the bar to go home and sober up with.

Was still open in 75/6 Tealeaf, all the bouncers from the Cav used to meet there before going on duty at 8-30

You sure about that, Jaysay? i did quite a bit of drinking around Blackburn about 73/4 before I left for pastures anew and I seem to remember Yate's was in the old arcade, which got pulled down a few years before. Or am I, through the past mists of alcoholic inhebriance, getting confused with another location?

No was down a side street Tealeaf, I worked at the Cav 74/5 When it shut they opened a brand new place nearer the town centre. The place we went to was really dank inside dark wood and you had to queue up for your drinks, the queue was roped off with brass upstands with red ropes between;)

I cant remember exactly where that was Jaysay...was it further up on Church Street than where the newer one was but perhaps on the other side? My Dad once got a part time job there, but he's not with us anymore, and i never saw it at that time. I know he used to say there were some real characters in there, and they used to throw sawdust down on the floor, to help soak up the spilt ale etc etc!!:D

I've been in Blackburn today and had a wander over there. Yes thats definitely what was The Dunn Horse, there used to be 2 entrances, the one on the corner has now been blocked in, and has advertising on it, whilst the other entrance on Market Street Lane is still there!

The other Pub diagonally opposite, which now has the name Clitheroe Kates on the side is definitely what was The Old Bank, as far as i recall it was in a row of terraced property at some point, which will have altered how people remember it! Age does funny things to the mind, and i worked near there in the 70's early 80's and i think that there were buildings on both sides of what you see now, cant remember, what was on the corner next to it, where the grass is now. But i think at the other side, where there is the Car Park and Grass verge in front of the Co-Op Funeral Service, was a small row of terraces which might still have been a Funeral Parlour but a smaller concern than it is now!

The street it was on Taggy was at right angles to Church Street if I remember rightly, I know it wasn't fare from the Cav.

Yate's Wine Lodge did later move to Church Street Wadey, but i dont recall what year it moved. Wasn't somewhere i used too often, and i cant recall if there was a Chinese upstairs. I do Remember the Chinese upstairs over the Market Hall though!

It must have moved after 75 Taggy, mind you there was a lot of building work started around Blackburn in those days, Can always remember going past the Cave on Lords Square to get the Yates and it wasn't far way, the map JEFF reproduced seems to make me think I was right

Yes i think your spot on with that Jaysay. As you say, was an awful lot of building work going on around then, as as you say (and the map shows too) that you could then walk straight up Lord Street, parallel to Church Street, and then Yates was on the left hand side..i'd got confused between Lord Street and Church Street. I guess it would have been around or after 75, i'd started work in Blackburn in 74 and can remember the new one opening but wasn't sure just when. Do you know anything about the Chinese Wadey is mentioning there, or is he perhaps getting mixed up with the one over the Market Hall?

I can only remember the Chinese which was on the corner on the upstairs, can't think it was over Yates though, was quite a big place.

Just a little wonder, anybody ever use the Sakumo restaurant on Ainham was right next door to M & M taxi's Mani and Marie, we used to go there every Friday after finishing work at the Cave, for a meal, then upstairs for a few bevvies:D

Silverline taxis was owned by two brothers called Bernie the eldest one was called Jack and he came in the Coach and Horse pub on Hassy Road in the 70s, he had a farm on the left hand side of the road between the Brittan and Guide

Yeah i recall the fire at the Cav Jaysay, it was always regarded as an "Insurance Job" but i guess most fires seem to get that rumour attached to them. We used to do some printing for them, and later when it became the Peppermint Place. Didn't they call it the "new" Cavendish once it reopened, and i think as a touch of irony the dot over the i in Cavendish became a Flame!!

Tommy was a very complex character Taggy, everything had to be in place every night, i.e. Same security, same taxi driver, same waitress etc. The Taxi driver, Tez used to pick me up at the stage door every night at 8-30 then of to the Saxon, Tez waited while I went up to Tommy's room, is first question was (and in exactly the same voice as TV) what they like tonight John( the audience) then I'd pick his bag up collect his agent from the next room then back to the Cav, then I was outside the door until he went on stage then back to the door afterwards, well usually inside the dressing room. You won't believe this but Tommy suffered from hug bouts of Stage Fright and necked nearly a full bottle of scotch before going on stage. On the Friday night he wen with us to the Sakumo restaurant for meal and a few drinks, He dropped me off in his taxi at Ossy Town Hall at 7am Saturday morning, with everybody waiting for the bus to Howard and Bulloughs, there faces were a picture with Tommy leaning out of the window shouting see you tonight John:D

The one artiste who appeared at the Cav who I couldn't stand was Lynn Paul, ex New Seekers, her name translated into Chinese was Foo Kin Cow and she was one, big time, she was so far up herself it was unbelievable, was glad when she moved on

Ya off course, but belper street weren't that fare because we actually went swimming during lunch when we were at college, the guy who was the supervisor was the chap who used to teach swimming at accy baths when I was a school, Jim Smith, he died not too long ago, there was an article in the Obs about him

Yeah...I remember him...the man with the pole.

We had proper swimming pools in those days. Mind you, it was only about 6 years ago I got slung out that 'Waves' pool in Blackburn for misbehaving.

might be getting confused here , but seem to remember Belper St. baths were in the Daisyfield area of Blackburn(off top of Harwood St.general area near the Sir William Hopwood pub/greyhound race track ? to the left before the railway underpass to the Northrop) , Blakemoor and Freckleton St. were the other two swimming baths in B,Burn ... talking about the late 50s early 60s

Now you've got me puzzled SJ I know we used to go for a swim from college in the sixties and the baths were quite close to the college, somewhere between the college and the Mecca

Lyn Paul, born Lynda Susan Belcher (16 February 1949 in Wythenshawe, Manchester), is an English pop singer. She changed her name to Lyn Paul before joining the international pop group The New Seekers in 1970. She has now found most recognition and critical acclaim as the lead role Mrs Johnstone, in long running West End musical Blood Brothers.

You are way off with Belper St. Baths. It is (still going) situated at th bottom of Belper st. off Cob Wall ,Whalley Old Road. about 300 mts from St. Albans Church.

Blackamoore Baths (girls only) was at the rear of King Georges Hall.

Freckleton St Baths was off King St. .
Freckleton St. was opposite what used to be the Elma Yerbugh pub. now a hire shop
.

Pubs ... Vulcan, Jubilee, Ribbledale, George. Turn Right and at the bottom of St was the Swan, Sun and Thwaites or Saemes.
The Wine lodge was where Debenhams is opposite the Abbey. It moved to Church st..
Opposite the Cav was the Grosvenor Pub and there was a Chinese behind it down the ginnel

Freckleton Street Baths, that where we went from college in the 60s

Freckleton St baths were near St Peter's graveyard / church Jaysay, sort of near where the new bridge is now. Like you say, only a few minutes walk from the college.

Blakeymoor baths were in the basement of Blakeymoor school. I worked in that building for years while the baths were still open (council run). The college, who I worked for at the time, took over the baths when it closed. For years we used it as a storage area, but eventually it was converted into classrooms and staff areas. The pool is still there to this day, it was just boarded over. There's an access hatch in the middle classroom. I'll bet 99% of the students (and staff) that have classes in there don't realise there's a swimming pool below their feet. It must have been gas lit in its early days, as when we were converting it, I found an old gas mantle above a suspended ceiling.

Those were the days used to meet in the wine lodge for a couple of docks of Aussie white before starting work at the Cav, we weren't allowed to drink on duty;)
