Early fifties – Monday evenings to the Empire for 6d for the 6 o’clock showing.
Friday evenings to the Odeon. We went in early and stayed as late as we could get away with before some nosey parker usherette remembered that we had almost taken up residence and threw us out.

Even though I went to the school (Accrington Secondary Technical School 1948 - 1952) across the road from the Palladium in Ossy I never actually went to the cinema. I lived almost in the Centre of Accrington on Castle Street and then on Blackburn Road next to what used to be the Coop clothes shop so it was too far to go especially when there were plenty of cinemas closer. And then there was the question of money or rather the lack of it.

So most of my leisure time was spent up Gatty park or on wet days under the railway bridge near the bottom of Scaitcliffe Street playing football. We also had a ‘den’ under one of the platforms in the railway station where boy met girl and found out the difference. There used to be a way in (for kids) from Paxton Street. I wonder what ever happened to Mavis Hargreaves? Her dad was a brute. If any of us lads came within ten yards of Mavis he would threaten us with his belt and chase us away.

Then in ’53 when girls became something more than someone to tease we discovered dancing and went to Knowlmere Street to learn and on to the Ritz on Saturday nights.

Once in a while I paid my sixpence and took the long climb up to the gods in the Hippodrome to watch a variety show.

Sometimes I wish that I could go back to those carefree days but then there would be no computers.

What some folk would do to get hold of a Majestic wafer ! :D Did ya' take each wafer slice off one at a time then lick the fondant cream 'til you got to the next slice, albeit did go rather soggy if you licked too hard.. hee hee.

My Mum informed me that the one in Rhyddings Street, next to the Con Club, was called the Palace.

The three picture houses in Ossy showed two pictures a week, so if you timed it right, and you had the money, you could see a diferent film every night of the week, except for Sunday, when apparently they closed.

The Palace was on Rhyddings street, next to the Con.

Ah! The Church Con up Ossy. I remember it well. Opened by Joe Mortimer who ran Joe Morts rock and roll club above Kingdom Hall on Blackburn Road adjacent to the railway bridge for youngsters who still preferred real dancing. You know waltz, quickstep, foxtrot, tango and a selection of Olde Tyme dancing like the Barn Dance, Paul Jones etc.

Sadly it wasn’t well patronised and closed after a few months but it was great while it lasted.
