What were you doing 20 years ago?

I was talking to a friend today and we got talking about what we did when we were 18. Thats 20 years ago! I realised we were out every night doing something even if it was just to go to the pub.

I was running (with a mate) a scout/cub group down Church Kirk next door but one to the Stag! My mate was Scout leader and i was assistant Scout Leader and I was Akela (Cub leader to all who dont know) and my mate was the assistant. Every wednesday and thursday night i caught the bus from here into accy and walked it out to church. Friday and Saturday nights were go down accy and meet up with my mates and go round town - meet up place the Corners and last orders the corners and if we could afford it lars de dars if they let us in! Once a month we'd go to Blackburn on a Saturday night. We could only afford to go once a month cos of the cost of the taxi home! Sunday, Monday and Tuesday was the local nites - we'd go in there and play pool, space invaders, football and darts.

Can remember one Saturday night we'd arranged to go to Blackburn and i was working at the Little Chef at weekends because I was on the YTS and £26.25 didnt go right far! Anyway ended up working at the Little Chef till 10 caught the 10.15pm bus to accy and 10.30 pm bus to Blackburn and met up with my mates in Yates Wine Lodge. Went up Peppermint Place and fell asleep right next to the speakers! I'd been working since 3pm and 6 1/2 hours on your feet running round like an idiot then running along the road and dropping my work clothes off at my house then catching the buses. I was tired - thats my excuse and i sticking to it! Bouncers thought i'd passed out drunk!

20 years ago I was living in Salford and doing the art college thing. I was out every night in Manchester or at the student union for cheap beer. I only had one colour of clothing in my wardrobe - black.

20 years ago moved from Harrogate to Blackpool as my mum bought a hotel there. Unfortunately I was only 15 and the move meant that my O'levels were now in a different examining board area and after already doing one full year then had to change some of my courses and cram for a whole year :(

I was into the last month of doing my degree in art at Liverpool.

According to my diary twenty years ago last night I stayed up doing the illustrations for the programme for our London show.

I was also partying hard too, my last few weeks in the ivory tower.

I was also 18 and was doing the friday and saturday round town routine. I also used to start and finish in the Corners bar and occasionally Lar-de Dars if I could afford it. I was doing voluntary work at the ESMI Unit at Accy Vic, waiting to start my nurse training...:)

I was 19, working 3 part time jobs whilst waiting to go in the RAF.

I am not, nor ever have been one for socialising so clubs etc never really entered the equation, although one of my part time jobs was in a bar.

Getting ready for my forthcoming wedding (June 28th, St Annes, Cobham Road) and wondering if marrying a Peruvian girl who I'd only met five months ago was really the basis for a lasting union.

Also wondering about Accrington Stanley's prospects for next season and thinking wistfully, "wouldn't it be nice to see them in the football league again...but, of course, it'll never happen."

Fast-forward to now...we're getting ready to celebrate our 20th anniversary and as for Stanley, well, you know all about that...so I suppose it all worked out OK in the end!

Approx this time 20 years ago my youngest had fallen off a swing and ended up with a fractured skull, he was fine at the end of the saga thankfully, and we were going back and forth to BRI via Ambulance and that is when I asked "What do you need to have to get on the service?" At that time I was on HBT and looking to get out of the job as I could see the way that the privateisation of the buses was going.

Twenty years ago today, according to my diary, my Dad said as a present I could go anywhere in the world for passing my degree.

I had three blissful weeks above a doughnut shop in Mykonos, catching up with the Austrian friends I'd made there two years earlier.

Happy days.

Twenty years ago I was Sister on the Gynaecology ward at QPH....and still learnig, though I was doing a city and guilds in teaching adults as well.
You can't teach anything without learning something...even if that something is about yourself. I hated doing lesson plans and stating aims and Objectives for lessons. I always said that if I ruled the world I would banish the two words 'aims' and 'objectives'.......but once the lesson planning was done I really enjoyed the teaching part.......I think that I am basically a repressed exhibitionist!

Margaret Pilkington 20-08-2006 20:34

Re: What were you doing 20 years ago?

The other thing about teaching was that we had to have 30 hours of observed classroom teaching so that we could be graded.....I had a male tutor, so teaching the female reproductive system was quite embarassing for him........he used to glow bright red when he had to ask me questions after the teaching sessions were over....and I used to make it twice as bad for him by pretending that i hadn't heard his question properly.......he would try anything not to have to use some of the anatomical words that were necessary. :D

How so? I worked there for over 20 years and promotion came mistly with a moce to another branch, plus those of us in larger branches where the staff could be spared filled in at smaller branches when staff were on holiday so it wasn't as if I was coming and going to different branches every week. I started off in Accy from where I went "on relief" to some of the smaller places - then moved to Church, the Clayton, then Rishton, then Gt Harwood. Shortly before leaving I did the odd stint at LSW.

The early days were the best when it was Blackburn TSB and head office (admin) was in Preston New Rd., before computers and profit margins.

Alot people say " oh that was young " but always worked to support kids, still married to their dad, and like yourself, never regretted it either. 20 years ago I was 27 and I had has little idea of what I was doing then as I do now...

I was if I recall correctly working at Rossall Hospital. I worked 12 hours shifts, and spent most of my “off duty” time ****ed. It was around that time people became concerned that my love for the high life of the New Anchor Public House following a recent divorce was affecting my physical and mental health. It did for a time and then the whole thing collapsed; it’s surprising what another mans suicide can do to wake one up.

The man who died was my estranged brother in laws brother. The night he took his life I was sat in tears on top of a ladder contemplating my future or the closing of it.

Five day’s before I had been on nights, when I finish work I went out and bought a new three piece suite (my first bit of furniture since the divorce) and a T Bone Steak, that afternoon I put the steak on the grill and sat on the bed listening to the radio. I fell asleep. I awoke at the sound of the lady next door banging on the door and screaming fire through the letter box. I had been asleep for two hours. The steak was completely gone along with most of the grill.

Why was I up a ladder? I was trying to strip the burnt and smoke damaged paper off my kitchen walls. At the time I became suicidal, I was ****ed, crying and demented at the fact that my first chance at getting on my feet had gone with my dinner a week earlier. It took me a month to redecorate the Kitchen and a further year to recover from the cost of the fire. I have never bought a T Bone since that day…..

20 years ago,I was running round NZ playing footy every weekend and working 12 hours a day Mon-Fri.No problem there, but the weekends taken up with football was at the expense of time with my then wife (nowdays referred to as The Wicked Witch of the South) and my newly born daughter.Of course I was to selfish and to blind to see what damage I was doing to my relationship and divorce was only a few more years away.Money was plentiful and life was wonderful.Nowdays life is still wonderful, but money just a tad scarcer(sp).
