The very first gallon of petrol that I bought was back in the late fifties for two shillings and eleven pence – a fraction under 15p in today’s money.

To fill the 4.5 gallons tank on my Triumph Thunderbird 650cc twin motorbike it cost me 13 shillings and 6 pence and that was enough to get me home from Fareham to Blackburn and half way back. I had the carb tuned for economy but even so the old bike still had a decent turn of speed comfortably past today’s maximum speed limit not that there were any motorways in those days.

Or speed limits... did you feel any less safe because of it? and remember that at the time your probably also didn't wear helmets or have teh advantage of kevlar/carbon fibre protective gear. :D

The navy insisted that we wore crash hats entwisi or we couldn’t bring the bike onto navy land. Apart from that the only protective clothing we had was for bad weather like waterproof over trousers and an oilskin coat. But at home a skid lid interfered with ‘the image’.

I felt safe enough without speed limits on certain roads because there wasn’t a great deal of traffic and a 650cc had the oomph to get out of trouble before you got into it.

Had a leaflet from asda saying I get two pence of per litre if I pay on my card. I didn't bother reading it though so can't say if theres a catch. I don't pay for my fuel.
