This is a piccie of my beloved deceased mum and dad who spent many happy hours pursuing the pastime of tandem riding, widespread in the U.K. It only halted when my brother came along.

As a child, I was enthralled by their anecdotes of bad weather, falling off and 'put-up' night stopovers. 'Course even I am too young to remember ;)

Doubt whether this pastime will ever be resurrected, but anyone out there have any stories to tell on this ?

That’s a nice photo Kate, I remember a couple that use to tandem round Church in the 60s. Not something I’d consider as a pastime, it would depend on the countryside and who was on the back I suppose.

Well, Doug .. long gone in the 60's methinks... Gawd, feel like Methusalah now.

I'd prefer to be up front actually, like to be in the driving seat :D

particularly, when me Mum used to tell me about Dad having a runny cold.

'cept quite a few women's wallets are fatter than mens these days. :p

Would be harder now I suppose, with all the traffic.. have probaly only seen 2/3 on the roads in the last 10 years ... :(

No, not brave, adventerous I would say. What great experiences. Although, I am being hypercritical .. prefer the warmth of me car and Radio 2. :D

Great pic Kate.

Cycling was a massively popular pastime in the 30's.

Not having so many cars on the road would make it a real escape.

When did they stop tandeming?

Surely they could have got a little basket for baby Kate on the front, for you to go too?:D

me mate from laneside used to have a tandem, that was late 60s early70s had completely forgot about them aint seen one for donkeys years, nice memorie katex.:)

have to agree Kate , great photo , I guess from family stories that cycling was big during the thirties , I once came across an old medal of my grand-dads for the 'Clarion Cycling Club'. I think one of the more popular spots for cycling speed trials was the old Lancaster to Preston rd. (not sure of the road number but could be the old A6 as Doug mentions ), but allways refered to in my family as the coroners waiting room

My mum and dad borrowed a tandem once to see what it was like before they went the whole hog and bought one to go on holiday. They lived in Spring Hill and got as far as the top of Charter St before my dad decided that it was not going to be the mode of transport that revolutionised their free time. My mum could not reach the pedals at all and so poor old dad found that he was having to do the donkey work for both of them. ( idont think that the gear sysytem was too sophisticated either so by the time he got to Willows Lane the experience had nearly put his lights out permanently.
