Yeah they do still have detention ... BUT....

It usually entails the words

I MUST not hit the teacher.............

I must not bring fire arms into school grounds..............:(

LOL! I like that statement, your teachers had a sense of humour :D ....... Sadly ours didn't, I spent quite a bit of time in detention and we just copied out the school rules

Mr. Lord -- our woodworking teacher at Towneley School in Burnley (circa 1940) -- used similar statements but the punishment he meted out was somewhat more severe. A couple of mighty whacks from his Charlie Chaplin-like cane across the open palm of your hand in front of the class -- a most painful and humiliating experience. I know for I had that experience -- just once, you got the message loud and clear about not talking in class the first time. Of course you didn't dare tell your parents about it -- that would result in a stern lecture about the need to comply with school rules!

I became good friends with Mr. Lord later when I took night school classes from him relating to motor cycle maintenance and repair. I thanked him for the lessons in discipline he taught me.

I have heard the saying but never had to write it out when in detention. Usually it was " I must NOT talk in class"

I remember having to write out 100 times "I must put the date on all my work" but I thought the teacher was going to explode when I handed it in - I hadn't dated it!
