The gossip was correct, Kate. I used to see her standing by the roadside under the railway bridge by Church station (she lived opposite). She used to step out in front of lorries and flag them down. |
Re: Accy Characters
My first husband got booked for speeding and had to appear at Church Magistrates Court (just the clock remains there now) She was up in court the same morning for urinating in a public place. The only reason he was speeding through Church was to avoid her, because she had jumped out into the road trying to stop his motorbike on one occasion previously.

I remember the Michael Jackson impersonator :) I remember him walking through marks and spencers when I was a kid doing his stuff...
There's a great guy who I always say hello too when I see him, an old fella with white hair. Has/had a dog called max, lives up hodder street way I think, he's often seen around town playing his harmonica, I've got a video of him on my other computer playing his harmonica and pointing his walking stick at my camera :) What a guy! |

Re: Accy Characters
anyone remember a guy must have died in 70s or late 60s was known as "Tommy Two Guns"? i used to see him occasionally in the St Leger on plantation street, he was apparently named cos he was n old gangster in the states, actually worked with "Legs Diamonds" mob, many used to laugh at the guy n think bull, but it was fact, which he once proved to me. no-one seems to know of him, but was in a conversation with our own Bob Dobson, last summer n he certainly knew him, or of him, heard some fascinating storys off the owd guy, n always used to buy him a beer fer telling em, maybe some of our older members knew him or of him?

Now you'r taxing my memory, after being out here in Oz for some 45 years things about the old town and its characters get a bit hazy however, Jack Green could have originated from Clayton Le Moors but in the early 60's he married a lass named "Mary" and if I rember rightly they used to live near or behind the Odeon Cinema off The Broadway..

There was a Danny Green, who lived behind the Forts Arms, he had a sister Patricia, ( Pat ) cant remember if there were any other sibblings though . Pat looked like Petula Clarke.

Re: Accy Characters
Yes Jack was very handy but unlike a few in Accrington in the early 60's he never looked for bother but neither did he run away from it, much to the discomfort to those that annoyed him.

Must stop looking at this site, after all its more thgan 50 years since I left Church and I did'nt think my memory would last that long - anyway I digress- Can anyone remeber "Betty Birtwistle (lived on or near Lyon St, Church) anyway Betty was what would be descibed as a good looking bird with legs that seemed to go on and on. Well Betty used to work in the office at Howard & Bulloughs, when she walked passed the Railway Good Yard Office all the Boys used to perve on her and drool, Betty was well aware of this, the boys did'nt know that we knew each other so when I waved she used to wave back much to th3e chagrin of others - those were the days - sorry but I'll have to go and have a lie down, just thinking about it has made my pace maker kick in and I've only a ferw more years life in the battery.

Re: Accy Characters
Does anyone recall a lad that always used to be in the town centre wearing a jacket with "Adam and the Ants" on it - he always had his hair in a mohican! This was prob in the late 1970's - once Adam and the Ants became popular he stopped wearing the jacket!

This is so funny! Betty Birtwistle is my auntie. She used to live at 65 Lion Street, Church, with my dad, Barth Birtwistle, and her sisters Maureen and Norma. Does anyone else remember the family or anything about my dad when he was younger? He went to Rhyddings School and always used to tell me that he was 'top boy' whatever that was.

My auntie Betty (Birtwistle) is 81 now, living in Leeds and has never married, so I think you missed your way there! I understand from my mum that she was a bit of a stunner in Accrington, and I think she worked at the Odeon and always carried a posh umbrella. Do you remember her brother, Barth, who's my dad (died 1995)? Sue O'Brien (nee Birtwistle) |

Hi Keith do remember you just looked at your photo. I think your Jean was nearer my age. I used to live near the Sacred Heart on Blackburn Road. Do you remember the Flynn family. Dad Charlie quite a character. I love in Australia now have been here for 42 years but coming HOME this year. I live in Coffs Harbour so not that far from you. Been reading all the nostalgia today about Uncle Dick and Sadie. Joe Morts etc. Went back in 2007 ?what happened. The market is not the same. No fish stalls or tripe barrows. Missed the smell of the bacon in Redman's. Things aint what they used to be.

His jacket was black leather, and was painted with a white picture of Adam Ant, and the name of the band. They were cutting edge at the time, quite cultish. As you say, when the group became the biggest teeny pop band of the early eighties, he disappeared...or at least stopped wearing his jacket! |

Re: Accy Characters
I went back in July 1998, was terribly disapointed, everything seemed to be dull as if the life had been sucked out of the old town. Took me a long time to find a stall at the back of the Market Hall which sold tripe. What ever happened to those tripe dressers at the side of the Hall. Isn't anything sacred anymore
