MOD/ROCKER OR 60s HIPPY- CHICK
What cloth's did you were when you were younger? I have been a mod wearing chunky granny shoes and cromby coat.
I got a suade skirt with my first weeks wage. I can remember ben shirman shirts 1st time round mine was a black n white check with short sleeves and i had a pair of Lee Cooper cord jeans to go with it. Then back to rock 'n' roll. circular skirt, ankle sox, t-shirt, pony tail, stockings and a garter. All those handsome Teddyboys in there drapes and beetle crushers not forgetting flouresant sox and bootlace ties. |
Re: MOD/ROCKER OR 60s HIPPY- CHICK
Can't remember there being many Teds around when me and you were growing up ANNE. Did you go to special Rock & Roll concerts or something?
Mini skirts were in by the mid sixties! By the time I was at secondary school, it was all psychedelia & flower power. Had my first pair of flares at 13. Later Grandad shirts with jeans & braces, hot pants, thigh length boots, platform shoes, suede fringed jackets, cheesecloth shirts - the list is endless. Most of the stuff's been back in fashion & gone back out again!! ;D ;D ;D |
Re: MOD/ROCKER OR 60s HIPPY- CHICK
used to love wearing my little bell around my neck mum and dad used to think it was the cat coming in.

Re: MOD/ROCKER OR 60s HIPPY- CHICK
A mod definitley. there was no teddy boys unles as mentioned you went to a dedicatd Ted club. It was Mods and Rockers (or smellies as we called them) I mean whats better. Good clean haircut, A Ben Sherman, Nice pants and a pair of Royals.. Or long unwashed hair, two pairs of jeans that never get cleaned and dirty leather jacket even in summer.
Anyone seen Quadraphenia (spell check) the mods and rockers film. I was in Brighton when they filmed it.. sort of. I arrived there on a Saturday with around 50 others from preston and we saw scooter clubs from all over the country. they told us they where asked to come down and be extras in a film to be shot on sunday. we where on a coach (for football) and had to leave brighton at midnight so just missed being in it as they wanted as many mods as possible.. I still like polo shirts and wear them all the time....remind me of fred perry tops.. If I could afford I would treat myself to a Ben Sherman shirt as there still in fashion.. but expensive tackle last I looked.. |
Re: MOD/ROCKER OR 60s HIPPY- CHICK
Went to the Preston branch of the rock 'n' roll appreciation sociaty ( excuse spelling ) till the 80s. Our mate who was our Sons Godfather even attended the ceramoney in his Drapes. Looked ever so smart.
Brillant film Quadraphinia Harry. Bet you also had a Parka with a fur hood. |
Re: MOD/ROCKER OR 60s HIPPY- CHICK
Quadraphenia, cool film!
I was a 70's child and an 80's teen. Remember having some tartan 3/4 length pants as a kid, they were a hand me down from an older cousin and sooooo cool, sang shang-a -lang all over the street in those ;D In the 80's mini kilts (which they are now selling again in Dorothy P's) frilly shirts lots of black and white new romantic stuff, then the inevitable gothic period, all black studded bracelets and belts, pointed boots with buckles and breakneck heels. Think I even had a ra-ra skirt in the 80's. Heck! I've reinvented myself more than Madonna. ;D |
Re: MOD/ROCKER OR 60s HIPPY- CHICK
I was a mod in the mid-60's. We had our suits made at Burtons or if you were really dedicated, at Ernie McKnoes on Blackburn Road. 4" deep pocket flaps, ticket pocket, 12" vent up the back, 6-button cuffs and parallel trousers, worn slightly short to show off our brogues. Rockers/teds (there were still a few 5O's diehards around town in the mid-60's) were our sworn enemies.
Quadrophenia was a good film, but the fights were a bit staged. You should have been on Peel Street bus station some Saturday nights in 67/68. It was like World War Three! As a natural coward I stayed well out of it! Started growing my hair and turned a bit hippy when I went off to college in '69. But now i've gone full circle and wear my hair short, along with Ben Shermans and Harrington jackets. Incidentally, Harry, you can pick up Bens for around £20 at Slaters Menswear if you ever go into Manchester. |
Re: MOD/ROCKER OR 60s HIPPY- CHICK

Re: MOD/ROCKER OR 60s HIPPY- CHICK

i was a deffinate rocker, tight skirts 4" heels, lots of net under skirts under our flared skirts & dresses, we wore suits too a very smart era then not like these days all designer & no smart style// my opinion, jeans were work clothes for the lads then, but i used to pinch my brothers new ones to go up green howarth to watch the bike scrambles, that was the uniform for that, & rock & roll dancing still lives on ////

Re: MOD/ROCKER OR 60s HIPPY- CHICK
:rose8: I remember going to Accy Collage on Blackburn rd in 1971 (the old grammer school) with a sheepskin sleeveless coat thing that my family hated, flared jeans and cowboy boots, long hair and mexican mustache, thought I was the dogs bo**ox. Alas when I showed my kids the photos they howled with laughter and couldnt belive a bald headed old git like me had hair.:) :) :)

Re: MOD/ROCKER OR 60s HIPPY- CHICK
Hi Anne. I suppose I may have been one of those 'handsome' teddy boys of which you speak. Lol (wishful thinking). I do know that in the late 50's I was the ony one in Accy with the full monty. My mum didn't want to know me.LOL Sky blue suit, tight drainpipes, jacket to my knees, black velvet collar, cuffs and pockets. lace tie, The mob that I was with generally had black drains, and a variety of jackets, some with velvet collars. There was only about five of us at that time 1956-1961. We all hung out at Joe Morts near the railway station.
Could anyone please tell me if Mary Mortimer is still with us. The last info I had was she had a 'Mary's music shop' on Whalley Rd. I would dearly love to contact her so her address as well if possible. Thank you if you can help. |
Re: MOD/ROCKER OR 60s HIPPY- CHICK
Terry, take a look at Mary's Music, on Accy Photos Thread.

Re: MOD/ROCKER OR 60s HIPPY- CHICK
I suppose I was almost a hippy chick. I did paint flowers on my face and wear them in my hair, and wore numerous strings of tiny "love beads" and a bell round my neck. Come to think of it - it's more "definite" than "almost".
Quote:
My own favourite coat was a midi length herringbone with a huge collar from Biba. I wore it until it literally fell to bits. |
Re: MOD/ROCKER OR 60s HIPPY- CHICK
At school I was a mod along with all my mates. I had a Lambretta complete with a "tiger tail" dangling from the back rest......but then in 1967, I felt the need for speed and swopped my scooter for a BSA C15 bike with drop down handlebars and twin meg exhaust. All of a sudden, I was one of the most popular blokes in school as far as girls were concerned but most of my "mates" wouldn't even speak to me.
A couple of tales from that era, There was a mate that used a lighter to see how much fuel he had in his vespa tank :dork: And another mate that was posing on his scooter outside of school and a couple of greasers called him over to them. He went.....and they beat the sh** out of him! Some kids have no intelligence!! |
Re: MOD/ROCKER OR 60s HIPPY- CHICK
Dont know what i was? been an elvis fanatic all my life still love the bloke to bits!went to holy family in flourescent socks pink and lime green, and a pair of crepes got the p..s took out of me badly. didnt bother me and a few other people started to show there true colours. The p..s taking stopped when punk rock started! The first punk i remember around accy was a lad called kev grey he lived at the back of sacred heart pins and everything proper chap!love northern soul, country music about your dog dying, rythem an blues, contempary rock, and even one of barbara striesands, deep inside. just dont know where to stop!

Re: MOD/ROCKER OR 60s HIPPY- CHICK
I was a Burnley mod, who wore mostly white, panstick on lips and a weird walk! I tried to look like Twiggy on her photo shoots and affected a pidgeon toed walk. Looking back i must of looked pretty daft! Burnley Mecca was a great place if any of my friends couldnt go out i just went there and there was always some-one that i knew there! I loved the atmosphere and a lot of the lads from Accrington were the best lookers around at that time!
|
Re: MOD/ROCKER OR 60s HIPPY- CHICK
I was a wee bit young when the Teds were around. They used to scare the bejaybers out of me. My uncle ken was a bouncer at Joe Morts.
|
Re: MOD/ROCKER OR 60s HIPPY- CHICK
Well kiki I hope I was one of them, lost the looks a long time ago, used to go to Burnley Mecca Twice a week sometimes three a lot better than Blackburn, girls better too, saw Georgie Fame quite a few times there as well.
|
Re: MOD/ROCKER OR 60s HIPPY- CHICK
By the way, When Georgie Fame had the record out called Get Away, he was appearing at Burnley Mecca and they had a car there they were raffeling, never heard who won it. The last bus home to Blackburn was always packed, I lived in Clayton then, lots from Rishton as well. I used to go on my own sometimes, but always somebody there I knew and always plenty of girles available.

I wonder if I knew you? I didn't go to Joe Mort's much but used to hang out in the Wayside coffee bar opposite. My dad used to warn me to "stay away from the Teddy Boys". Well, I suppose you did project a tough image but, really, it was all quite innocent compared with today. The only Terry I knew was a very nice, blond-haired, stocky lad who drank pints and pints of - milk! It wasn't you, was it? :D |
Re: MOD/ROCKER OR 60s HIPPY- CHICK

Re: MOD/ROCKER OR 60s HIPPY- CHICK
I was definitely a mod, living in Manchester in the middle 60s. Haircut a Vidal Sassoon rip-off (before he opened in M/c) and A-line dresses. Tan panstick on face, almost white lipstick (remember that one from Miners, girls?) and black eyeliner. Tight ski-pants and ballerina slippers. Anyone remember hairy jumpers? Before that it was the full skirts with the starched hen's bottom underskirts - you never wore less than three. Remember spit mascara? - you were supposed to moisten the brush with water, but nobody ever did.
|
Re: MOD/ROCKER OR 60s HIPPY- CHICK
remember starching the underskirts every saturday ....if you ran out of starch . we used sugar & water then drip dryed um on line outside .those where the days late 50's early sixties for me ....ooo & then the mini's & hotpants i was really into those

I was a Goth
|
Re: MOD/ROCKER OR 60s HIPPY- CHICK
I remember going to one of the first sports centre discos with chains of safety pins around me, all dressed in black and standing out a mile from all the other girls - I was the only one dressed like that as you can imagine. I was 13 when punk came out in 1977 and I was gutted that I was too young.
My best friend had Elton John and Barry Manilow records in her collection and I had the finest selection of punk! Oh, well we were still best friends despite of huge differences in music taste and clothes taste. When I went to college punk was more or less replaced by goth look and it was a great time to be going out in Manchester. I did ok at college but perhaps not as well as I could have because I spent a lot of time going out and even longer getting ready to go out - my eye make up was a work of art. Then 80s started to settle down and get 'proper' jobs so had to look smarter. Having said that I had ra-ra skirts and fishnets - thought I was boy george. haha! Now I'm fortunate in that I work in the arts so don't have to look smart unless I have an important meeting, otherwise it's quite casual with jeans and sweater most days - still love black clothes! Chris says I'm a bit grungy sometimes but I guess that at my age I should be a bit tidier sometimes. I always make an effort when I have to! |

Can any body recall the names of any mod shops, in Manchester in the 60s.
It was an incredible feeling wearing a brand new hand made suit, new shirt, new brogues, etc, talk about jack the lad, we thought we would be forever young. |

I get most of my gear from Oldham Street in Manchester, POP Boutique being my favourite along with some vintage shops along there. I encourage any 'mature mod' (:p) to take a visit to POP, the vintage gear in the shop is brilliant (also brilliantly cheap) and the café below the shop is constantly playing 60s music. I'd go there everyday if I could. |
Re: MOD/ROCKER OR 60s HIPPY- CHICK
I was of the young Elvis era,, The lads all had quifs in their hair and had it greased up with brillcream,,they wore big crepe soled shoes , then it was winklepickers and shoe lace ties....
Us girls all wanted to look like the fabulous Sandra Dee...with full skirts and paper nylon petticotes ,stockings not tights...and stileto shoes ,that made marks in the lino (i was always in trouble for that) |
Re: MOD/ROCKER OR 60s HIPPY- CHICK
the saddest thing about being an aging Mod is the fact that when the term comes up these days in general mixed conversation (with young people) is that the term is now confused with web-site operators , apologies to the guys/gals who moderate this site ;) e.g I once said to someone of similar age to me "yep I used to be a Mod when I was younger" and this bright young thing in its 20s chipped in and said "Oh did they have chat rooms then ? ".
Another occasion the topic was about RPGs ......any knowledge I have about RPGs is thru living in various conflict zones and is limited to Rocket Propelled Grenades, what the hell do I know about Rapid Production Graphics , talk about talking at cross purposes with Silicon Valley crowd :D:D:D |
Re: MOD/ROCKER OR 60s HIPPY- CHICK

Re: MOD/ROCKER OR 60s HIPPY- CHICK
At 11 years old i thought i was something of a hells angel (well i cut the sleeves off my denim jacket:D).I was a punk at 17 in77(great timing).2nd generation mod at the end of the 70's.Bit of a drop out for a couple of years in the early 80's.A miserable northen git with spikey hair, trenchcoat & Bunnymen fixation in the mid 80's.Man about town ever since.
And i did the boot boy/suedehead get up just before the arrival of punk.Would'nt have been a Ted even if i'd been around at the time & you'd payed me in gold, could'nt stand the clothes & not too keen on the music. |

I was just a scruffy flowerchild in my teens lol. Flowers in my hair, flares, hippie kind of style. Glam goth/80s style rock-chick when I was making an effort. That hasn't changed though, I still dress like that when left to personal choice :)
