School Dinners

Used to cost 5 bob. In sec school used to take turns buying fags and pies. Unless it was a dinner we liked. They used to make a butter scotch pie that was rather like a butterscotch flavoured egg custard. Wish i knew how to make it. Can still remember the taste to this day. mmmm makin my mouth water thinking about it.

HarryX 30-08-2003 07:44

Re: School Dinners

Used to get 5 park drive and a book of matches with my dinner money.  Teachers used to stand at the edge of the playground and you had to give them a fag in order to pass them to get to the sneaky smokey area.

You could buy packets of 5 fags or the shopkeeper would sell you one fag.. Yes even in school iniform.

These are the days of no warning on fags.. Advertisment encouraging you to smoke blah blah and at age 13/14 not knowing any better. Thats always been my excuse for smoking... Lasted 25 years.. Now been smoke free for about 7 years :)

Re: School Dinners

I used to love school dinners real meat and veg, choc pudding and pink custard, now it's all junk food no wonder lots of kids are overweight.

HarryX 30-08-2003 07:57

Re: School Dinners

Never had spotted dick since.. Haa pink custard that takes me back :)

Caz 30-08-2003 08:01

Re: School Dinners

Used to like the salad. we had that once a week. Used to come with mashed potato, which I liked with salad cream on.

Also Manchester tart I think it was called. A banana and custard flan with jam at the bottom.

Once a week we used to get coffee instead of water, and occasionally milkshake.

Used to like prunes & custard too. Tinker tailor........

When I started school the dinners were 1 shilling a day (5p).

adi 30-08-2003 08:46

Re: School Dinners

Manchester Tarts - i used to love them, that brings back some memories.

We used to always have Ravioli on the Menu - it seems like it was on every day.

Other than that School Dinners where actually quite decent.
:)

ANNE 30-08-2003 13:12

Re: School Dinners

Cazzer we ad all that at our school in Preston. The coffeeand the bread and buter we got with the salad was to die for.
Sounds like you had it easy at your school harry bribing the teachers  :o  :o

Re: School Dinners

Hungarian Goulash!

Frogspawn (yuk!)

Fish on Fridays back then.

Apple Crumble - lovely

ANNE 30-08-2003 19:33

Re: School Dinners

Never had no goulash. Would have bin off to the pie shop if we did. YUK!!!!
Hate that sort of food. Its plain cooking for me all the way.
Prunes. Cant even look at one now without seening the lads trying to spit the stones back into the dish on the middle of the table.
Mick cant stand the things either.

lettie 31-08-2003 15:01

Re: School Dinners

Semolina and frog spawn, pink blancmange, prunes, brussel sprouts, which the dinner lady used to watch us eat, to make sure we didn't throw them under the table. Still can't eat a sprout without retching. No wonder we spent our dinner money on fags. ;D

HarryX 31-08-2003 15:24

Re: School Dinners

Frog Spawn.. thats the stuff....  Wern't skewl dinners great :)

ANNE 31-08-2003 15:36

Re: School Dinners

Frog spawn mmmmmm
soggy semolina yuk.
Manchester tart. Still my favorite.
Toad in the hole. Sure they used propper toads. Disgusting.
Bread and butter pudding now were talking.
Toast.
Good idea and a brew to go with it.

gemz 31-08-2003 19:41

Re: School Dinners

does anyone know the reciepe for that? and I don't mean high heals, fishnets and bright red lippy ;D

Caz 04-09-2003 12:40

Re: School Dinners

Nice one little mo!

Just a basic pastry case with a layer of rasberry jam at the bottom. sliced bananas on top of that and ordinary custard with a few more banana slices in the middle. Then hundreds & thousands on the top.
Made it myself a few times and it tasted just like the school stuff, so don't think there's anything else to it.  :)

janet 04-09-2003 13:59

Re: School Dinners

Caz 04-09-2003 14:26

Re: School Dinners

Can't remember having it with coconut on. always 100s & 1000s at school. Although undoubtedly the original  recipe would probably have been with coconut.  :)

lettie 04-09-2003 17:40

Re: School Dinners

Oooooh, got my mouth watering now, thanks for the recipe, always been a big fan of manchester tart, and it sounds so easy to do that even I might have a go at it.
Forgot to mention, have the culinary skills of a 4 year old  :-[

Caz 04-09-2003 17:48

Re: School Dinners

Hate cooking. Only make something from scratch when I absolutely have to these days. Or if someone wants a special treat.
Besides, once over it may have been cheaper to do it, but not any more.

Who was it said "life's too short to stuff a mushroom"?
There's always something better I could be doing.  :)

littlemo 04-09-2003 21:10

Re: School Dinners

Re: School Dinners

Cannot remeber the coconut but i remember the cherry.Wife has made me download the recipe.Maybe we will be in for a treat at the weekend.Problem will be the Custard. We cannot get that over here.Only a vannilla flavoured thing that tastes nothing like it at all.
thanks for posting the recipe Cazzer

ANNE 18-09-2003 20:37

Re: School Dinners

She can always make her own fresh custard. Using milk, cream, sugar and a vannilla pod. Never made fresh custard so she would have to check a recipe.

Mik Dickinson 20-09-2003 07:42

Re: School Dinners

Thanks Anne got that one.Wife also added an egg white in to it too.Do not ask me why?It made the custard go firm almost straight away.Got home from work yesterday and that is what we had for our afters.Childhood memories came flooding back

Re: School Dinners

I loved school dinners but now I cannot understand why there were fist fights over slices of buttered bread that were occaisionally handed out. It seemed to be important to get as many slices as you could.
I hated Friday's coz it was always Fish. Can't stand the stuff, even the thought of it makes me want to throw up. Wasn't too keen on prunes either.
What about school milk in those little bottles with the foil top and the little aluminium disk that was used to press the foil in.

When I I left Accrington to do my degree. I could not believe my luck to find that the dining room in the Halls of Residence used all the same recipies that I remembered from school - Sheer bliss!
