Hyndburn Sports Centre wasn't there, and we went to the baths on St James St. Boys' changing rooms on one side and girls on the other, and you couldn't go in unless you'd been in the cold shower.
Before the centre was built, it was  spare land in front of Emma St (Nelson's Tenement I think)and we all used to ride our bikes there, and messabout in the River Stink.

Tippler toilets at the bottom of the yard!

Had to make sure enough water went down the pipe or it got blocked. When it did you had to poke it with a long sick.

And squares of newspaper hung on the lavvy wall on a string.

Thought some of you might like this:

I remember the ol' Tippler toilets,
but the skill I once 'ad is now gone.
Finely balanced it were like a seesaw,
that flicked off the bits yer dropped on.

Judgin' it right were an art form,
t' know when t' squeeze in yer cheeks.
An' jus' 'ow to 'it it dead centre,
adjustin' yer bum on the seat.

The pride that I felt when I'd finished,
if it were clean as a Cooper's new keg.
An' the trouble it caused me t' free it,
if I'd 'appened t' drop a chair leg!

Now the toilets t'day are dead borin',
yer don't 'ave t' use 'alf yer brain.
Cos they all float about jus' like goldfish,
'til yer flush all the lot down the drain.

So, now that me skills are redundant,
I've found summat else I can do.
I take up me fags an' the paper,
some biccys an' a freshly made brew.

Having to light the coal fire first thing in the morning or you had no heat.
Cleaning the grate out, kindling, screwing up newspaper and arranging the coal. then putting the shovel up against it with a newspaper in front of it to get it going. If you weren't careful it set on fire! (We had bigger newspapers then!)

Do you remember those revolving wire stands that used to be in every newsagent's shop? They were packed with Amercian comics like Superman, Batman etc, which always seemed a bit more exotic than British comics with their ads for Charles Atlas, 3-foot animated models of Frankenstein etc. Further up the stand, there were monster books and Mad magazines, then at the top were those oh-so-intriguing magazines with titles like Stag and Blue Book. Trying to sneak a quick peek at them would earn you an instant reprimand from the shop owner!

Re: i remember when.....

Even though it was almost 67 years ago I well remember that Wednesday afternoon in January 1937.
The location was the classroom of the "top-class" lads situated in the recently opened extension behind the old building of Spring Hill Council School.
That afternoon we were a restless bunch of 13 yr olds, soon to thrust into the vulgar world of Industry with its ABC culture. There we were, sitting in orderly rows facing the blackboard and the formidable Mr Garnett, he with the most deadly cane in the school. Most of us were wearing darned Jerseys, patched pants ( short ones of course in those days ) and with few exceptions wearing clogs. Concentration was difficult, our minds were focussed on more important things than mere schoolwork, but Mr Garnett made no allowance for what he was unquestionably aware of and that fearsome length of Bamboo worked overtime. The schoolboy belief that a hair laid on ones palm along with a dollop of spit would cause the cane to break was shown to be simply wishful thinking. As usual on these occasions the clock slowed down, but 4 o`clock finally came and off we stampeded up Fife St and down Richmond St ( not road then) with our clogs clattering on the pavement in the forlorn hope that we would get there before it was over.
I`ll leave it there and see if anyone can say what it was about.

and the penny tray had 4 for 1d eg : black jacks  :D

HarryX 15-08-2003 12:37

Re: i remember when.....

FOUR ??

12 pennies made a shilling
5 new pence was the equivelant using a bob.. 5 pence bit

thus it was 2. summat pennies to a one new pence. Shops used to err on the safe side thus 2 things from the penny tray but the country played up buggery because they got less for there money (using penny trays as an example here) so some shops erred on the other side and you may have got 3 things for one new pence... But four?  That was a good shop :)

We once went to a party and he dissapeared. He was found under a bed fast asleep and I had to practically drag him home and some how drag him up a flight of stairs.
He remembered nothing the next day.

Loved those yellow licorice sticks, they lasted forever. Used to like chewing them as a kid, til they were soggy, then letting them dry up to chew again later :-[  Used to get shouted at off my mum for leaving them all over the house.
Loved blackjacks, fruit salads (and still do)
Bazooka Joe bubble gum, Ice cream screwballs with the chewing gum in the bottom :P

Anyone try hedgehog flavour crisps made by XL in Great Harwood (my mum worked there) They were vile but my sister loved em.
Space dust  80's kids like myself will remember this, it was horrible. [smiley=puke.gif]

Blackcurrant lollys dipped in water & those vile tablets you dissolved in water to make a drink. Supposed to be orange, lemon and lime but they just tasted like suger and water.  YUK!!!!!!
