Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
The laundrette, flippin nightmare dreaded weekends cos I knew I had to do it. Also being the eldest having to look after my sisters and take them everywhere with me. If one of them was cheeky to a neighbour, I would get rollocked for it. So unfair >:(
|
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
Had to do the washing up after meal times and that was until i was 18 embarrassing or what
|
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
Had to go to the shop and buy 10 number six tipped for my mum. Used to buy a white mouse with the penny change sometimes and got killed off my mum for not bringing it home. It was only a penny for goodness sake!
|
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG

|
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
Oh, yeah sorry! I'm veggie!! I don't do real mice!
|
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
you should try worms :D
|
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
Yuck!!!
I recently found a nest of 5 baby grey tits and had to cut up worms and place them in their throats every two hours for 2 weeks to keep them alive and make them grow strong. That was bad enough!! I'll stick to the spaghetti here in Italy, that's as near as I'll ever get to eating worms! |
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
Baby sit my kid Bro and Sister. Nearly killed him once. Coz I let him fall out of his pram and he went rolling down a place called plum pudding hill on the way to bluebell woods.
|
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
Wear a liberty bodice and a knitted vest, (welsh wool of course) I was boiling hot and itching all day long, but mum said I wouldnt get a cold like all the other girls.
I was the only one in my class, I hated the days we went swimming and all the girls laughed at me, |
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG

|
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG

|
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
Eat spaghetti.Never liked the stuff.Sorry Jo.Stupid thing is though i do not mind pasta. One of the worst things as a child was having to drag my younger brother around with me all the time during the summer school holidays. Then he would spend all evening teling my parents what we got up to.anybody else suffer like that when they were younger?
|
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
Oh, yes but with me it was my kid sister. She never dare grass me up to Mum and Dad though.
I used to hate having her tag along. Big embarrassment. :-[ |
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
True Anne, especially when i still had to do it at the age of 14.That is when it really got embarrassing. Was hard to meet up with anybody when you have somebody 4 years younger tagging along with you like a shadow
|
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
Mow lawns...wash up dishes...clean room...walk the dogs...clip the holly hedge...sweep driveways. All them mundane sorta things, but me used to get 10bob a week pocket money if me did it all.....no wonder my teeth are bad, all them sweets hahahaha.
|
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
Also had to go to the launderette, didn't enjoy it but found by spinning the clothes twice always had some spare 20p's for the sweet shop! Also hated having to go to bed before my older sister.
|
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
At least you didn't have to go to bed with your older sister Grego.. :D
|
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
No that would have been a punishment (she stinks) but she did have the comfiest bed!
|
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
Grego, you were always much better than me at holding our heads under the duvet..... don't you dare deny it.. :D

Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
Well lets see - the worst thing my & my brother had to do was decide who was gonna load the dishwasher!!!
I was the kid who had to tag along with my older brother - but I earnt a lot of money to keep quiet about certain things!!! |
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
Thats not bad, we used to argue for hours about whose turn it was to wash up and who had the luxury of being able to dry, many a plate smashed over that! Also when we were kids if our Nan came away with us on our hols me and Lettie had to share a room with her, that was gross!!
|
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
My brother and I shared the washing up duties and again there were arguments over who had to wash and who had to dry. At first we thought that washing was easier, but then clocked on that if you were drying then you could pretend to be 'doing something else' then simply put them away after they had 'drip-dried'. If it was his turn to dry I used to make it my business for the evening to pour water over the dishes on the plate rack every 5 minutes to ensure they stayed wet - how sad?
|
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
I was the eldest and it was considered my duty to do everything.
I had to do the washing up, go to the wash place, collect coal in a pram, baby Sit, Sweep the back Yard. |
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
I woz born to play 4 stanley
but rite now i do Nowt just chillin out wishin i hadnt moved away from accy |
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
Bloody Hell, I remember all this, including the tin bath in front of the fire once a week. I was the last one in out of four of us. Coal Cellers tell me about it. I loved creeping about down ours. I live on Church street in the 60s and it was very dark and dank.
In the late 60s early 70s I remember having to walk up willows lane to school at Green Howarth it was a bloody long way when you only had little legs, when it snowed it was fantastic. Is there anybody local to Miller Fold, do you remeber Nelson Hill and sliding down it in a carboard box in summer and anything to hand in winter. How about pram wheel go carts. Its been to long time, THANKS for the laugh. |
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
Doug do you remember Malcolm Martin from Miller fold about that time ? Or his stepdad (my Father inlaw) Dave Ellis (big Bloke)????????????
|
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
I hated being given cod liver oil on a spoon. Disgusting taste.
|
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
Apparantly I used to drink that stuff by the bottle full when I was a child.
I don't remember this and I cant stand either the smell or taste. Yuk.......... |
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
I used to have to pretend to be playing out the back when the coalman came, so that I could count the bags for my auntie (very distrustful, Northern women). Also when she went to the butchers (Ted Charnley) for mince, she always used to say "You run that mincer first, Ted Charnley, I don't want any old muck in with my good meat". Funnily enough, both the coalman and the Charnleys were family friends! Did anyone else have to watch the shopkeeper to see that there wasn't a hand on the scales with the bag of fruit or veg?
|
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
At our house back in the fifties we were made to mangle the tooth paste tube to completly empty it.
|
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
In 1964 I managed to mangle my fingers. My dad and granddad had to strip the mangle down to get me out. We had one of those tube keys to get the last of the past out. It was like a bigger version of those found on sardine tins.
|
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
We also used to have to take cod liver oil on a spoon but I quite like it now and still take it regularly.
|
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
I once fell in my nana's dolly tub that she kept in the back garden.
I almost drowned in the two inches of water at the bottom. All Mum and Dad could see were two podgy legs sticking up in the air. I was stuck fast and it seemed like forever before they got me out. |
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
I was made to bring the coal up from the cellar.....ooooo it was ever so dark.
Mind my brothers....all five of them. Go to the Co-op on Nuttall St and got clouted if I forgot the Divi number (10168) Cut newspaper into squares to go on a string in the lavvy......and eat KIPPERS yeeuk. I think today it would be counted as cruelty. |
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
Was anyone else out there made to have Scotts Emulsion and Virol???(which was cod liver oil and malt). I hated both of these vile medicines and once got my hair caught in the bedsprings whilst trying to get under the bed and away from my mother. I ended up having to have lumps of my hair cut off to get me untangled from the bed springs.
|
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
i was made to have malt & codliver oil but i liked it,
|
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG

Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
My Mother used to "pick potatoes" for a local farmer........and the best "Bakers" were hidden under my younger sisters pram mattress.
She also picked "prunes" and "Greengages" from the local orchards.....and guess who had to climb to the top of the ladder for one fruit if it was unsafe for adults? Collecting coal off the road after the coal man had delivered up our road,.but the best was the "Jublies." Triangular lumps of flavoured ice that were impossible to get to through the tough cardboard!! For the smokers, Do you remember Cadets (sold in 5's?).........when you are desperate and short of money..........! |
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
Talking of tin baths......My brother and I had the job of emtying ours, most of the water was emptied out using an enamel lading tin, but one winter night we decided it was far too cold to go out the back many times with the lading tin..... and instead we tipped all the water down the back steps. It was a particularly cold night and the water froze on the back steps. Mum went out in the dark the following morning and went A over T all the way down the back steps...... boy did we get our rumps warmed!!!
|
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
That's an interesting way of describing your experience the next day.:D
|
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
I used to mention this to my next sister down, who became a Sydney yuppy. She would cringe and turn away because she was ashamed of her past, but it was reality. As you know, the dunnies were outside. So, under my bed was a ****-pot and a bigger one under mum and dads. At the top of the stairs was a big bucket to empty them into if they got full. Guess who had to empty the bucket? Yours truly and I have to admit I often spilt some.:D :o I was going to include this in another thread but I think it belongs here:) No not very nice and something not usually spoken of but true nonetheless.
|
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
We used to have potties but we never had a big bucket. Ours were emptied every morning, individually out in the "privvy". I can't ever imagine it getting to the "overflow" stage but then again I do remember people went out in the night to do the necessary if necessary too.
It wasn't until I saw Crocodile Dundee that I knew what a "Dunny" was. :D |
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
I was the youngest of 3 kids and I used have to put the dishes away after they had been washed and dried, (talk about child cruelty). My brother hated me for this and would take any opportunity to make me cry usually by punching me or hitting me with the tea towel (stinger)
|
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
It dos'nt take long to fill a jerry, after a night out on the ppp-- town.
|
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
When it was wet or snowing, I was forced to put on a woolen balaclava! The bit below the mouth always got wet and then froze while you were wearing it.....
and the paddling pool would never come out until summer even if there was a heatwave in early June. The temperature didn't matter, the month did! |
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
Taking fag coupons and green shield stamp books and CO OP ones to get a bag of spuds.God i felt poor when i was forced to do that.Thank God they stopped them
|
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG

Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
Green shield stamps were Brilliant.
When we first got married we bought all our Christmas prezzies with them. Ouch the dreaded mangle. We had one when we first got married. I can feel my fingers throbbing at the mere thought. |
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
we had a mangle that doubled for the kichen table...we had newspapers on it for a table cloth ,,,,and i also had to cut newspapers up into squares for the loo...then put a string through the corners and hang them on a nail ,,,,,,newspapers were very handy in those days ...fish and chips tasted better in newspaper i swear
|

Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
Fish and chips certainly tasted better out of newspaper.
I used to get sent to the local chippy for a bottle of vinegar.......it used to be in a large barrel and it was something like 3d a pint. I used to drink some of it on the way home and fill the bottle up at the horse trough. My mother stopped sending me after a bit. I heard her telling one of the neighbours she wouldn't buy vinegar from Mrs Mayor again as she was watering it down ! |

I certainly do remember Fennings Fever Cure.......Fenning Little Lung Healers......Dr Doans Backache Pills......Bile Beans.......all sold at the local grocery store. Medicinal brandee......I once faked bad bellyache hoping for a dose of Indian Brandee.......it was blooming horrible.
|
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
Fennings Fever Cure, Bloody hell. I think I remember then. Was that the brown and yellow powder folded in paper.
|
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
It certainly was Doug.
|
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
i think the powders were for grown up,s .the fennings fever cure i was on about was for children in a bottle....do you remember oliveoil and raspberry viniger ,,and camphorated oil ..yuk ...
|
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
alas.....and sad to say, yes I remember all of those things. Scotts Emulsion......Virol (nasty stuff that).....worm cakes....they looked like chocolate drops with hundreds and thousands on......didn't taste too bad, but they gave you chronic gripes and the shish kebabs.
It was pretty bad at our house there were 7 kids and Mum used to treat us all at the same time......only problem, seven bums.......... one toilet. Not a good equation that! Accidents were bound to happen. |
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
Our first bog was a long drop in the back yard at Church Street (early 60s.) It’s was mid 60s before we had flush and about 67 before we had an inside loo up Miller Fold. I remember Virol, Yuk, (shiver). Hated Milk of Magnesia, loved Rose Hip Syrup, their was something else we where forced to take but I a be buggered if I can remember what it was.
|
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
We had a long drop too.......one of my brothers caught a live hen from one of the pens that was near where we lived and he put it down the long drop.........I cry with laughing when I think of my dad trying to get the b***** out.......it took him all of a sunday afternoon.
And what do you think....? NO-ONE knew how the hen had got down there! |
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
My grandma and Grandad were posh.......they had an inside flush toilet AND a two holer long drop out in the yard.
I could never understand the principle behind the two holer long drop.......like, would you want to be on the toilet doing a grunt with someone else doing the same thing?????? |
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
Quote:
You’re a wicked woman Margaret Pilkington. We only got a flush after my granddad lost his teeth down the drop. I remember we all went down to the treatment plant to see if they came out the other end. We never did find them..... |

Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
My Dad used to sweep the chimney and he had a lot of canes that slotted together.......he put these down the lavvy hoping that the hen would perch on them and he would be able to lift it out.......but everytime he got the thing within arms length it fluttered off back to the bottom.........we also tried filling the kitchen sink in order to prime the tippler action, but that didn't work either. I can tell you there was a lot of very unchristian language that Sunday.......but it was ever so funny!
|
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
Doug, you can't even dream of how wicked I can be! hehehe.
|
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
You can still get hold of olive oil and raspberry vineagar, used to sell it as for the outside loo didn't have one but my Nan did, it was horrible cold, and the loo paper that doesn't dry you, us young uns dont know where born!
|
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
Respect my elders, pity many parents dont instill that in kids these days.
|
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
Be patient, patience is a virtue
|
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
I was not made to respect my elders...but I was taught to respect them for their life experience.
I was also taught to give up my seat on public transport....something I would still do today if I saw an elderly person standing. I was taught that it was rude to answer back to an adult....I was taught that manners cost nothing and singled you out from those who had none. |
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
Tearing the newspaper up and stringing it was one of my jobs. Got into trouble twice. First time for wrong choice of newspaper - the ink came off. Second time same - but appealed and got off because the newspaper had changed the ink it used and I hadn't noticed (actually I had!).
|
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
Yes it was a choice of newspaper or Bronco....newspaper was best!
|
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
Quote:
I assume Bronco was equivalent to Izal (I think that is the correct spelling), one side polished and usless the other sandpaper and ouch! |
Re: WHAT WERE YOU MADE TO DO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG
Yes....Bronco and Izal were very similar....and as you say, pretty damn useless.
No Cushelle back then. |
