Old TV, Radio & Films
Remember Childrens' Favourites, BBC radio. (Was it called the Light programme then?) Saturday mornings? Who was the guy who used to host it back in the fifties?
Sing Something Simple on Sunday nights after tea. Is it still going? I remember seeing the Daleks for the first time (1963?) Scared me to death! Well - we'd never really seen anything like that before, and I was only 10! ;D |
Re: Old TV, Radio & Films

Re: Old TV, Radio & Films
We come along on Saturday morning
Greeting everybody with a smile We come along on Saturday morning Knowing it's well worth while Because we're members of the Odeon Club And we all intend to be, good citizens when we grow up And champions of the free We come along on saturday morning Greeting everybody with a Smile, Smile, SMILE! Greeting everybody with a Smile! "I thought champions of the free meant the guy who used to pay to get in and then let all his mates in through the exit at the side of the toilets!" |

Re: Old TV, Radio & Films
I think the Hot Chestnut Man finished in about 1958, so probably before your time, Cazzer.
Ernie, you remembered the Odeon Club song word perfect. Only thing is we used to sing "good teddyboys" instead of "good citizens" (it was the 1950's after all). Then afterwards, to prove what tough nuts we were, we used to run across the road and walk along, balancing on top of that circular brick tunnel that covers the River Stink, before the recently-demolished market was built over it. |
Re: Old TV, Radio & Films
used to hang about the river stink area a lot, ASFC1951, used to go that way home from the flicks, lived on Bradshaw St, near where Sacred Heart school used to be.
Maybe we met!! |
Re: Old TV, Radio & Films
Maybe, Cazzer, I lived over the other side of Blackburn Road; Claret Street, just off Willows Lane. Not too far away really. Remember the underground? What a creepy, smelly place. No wonder they've bricked it up.
|
Re: Old TV, Radio & Films
Vaguely, didn't used to hang round there though.
Used to live up Richmond Rd at one stage. Didn't go to Hannah St did you? |
Re: Old TV, Radio & Films
Circa 1936 -- Great excitement when our first "Wireless" was delivered from Willmans on Blackburn Rd -- somewhere near Bill Snape`s Motor Bike Shop, -- wow !!! Henry Hall playing " Rusty & Dusty Brown".

Re: Old TV, Radio & Films

Re: Old TV, Radio & Films
Talking of shops, anyone remember all the old record shops in town? There was Bandbox, opposite the market hall, Tony's, on Blackburn Road opposite the station, Mary's, which started on Blackburn Road near the railway arch then moved to Whalley Road, Marshall's, also on Whalley Road and Wiseman's on Broadway, opposite Woolies. I also vaguely remember a record department in the old Co-op on Abbey Street, opposite the top of Little Blackburn Road. Anyone recall any others?

I'm surprised that nobody's mentioned "Journey Into Space". Used to come on the radio on Monday evenings at 7:30 right after "Top of the Form" I think. I'm guessing that it would be '57? '58?
|
Quote:
Next wek is (I think) part 5 of "Earth in Peril". "Mars" finished early in January. Just like it was in the 50's, even got the wife listening to it :coffeecup |
Hi Darby:
Thanks for the info but since I'm an Ex Pat I don't listen to the Beeb anymore. There is a website where you can listen to the first series of JIY episodes though at: http://www.radiolovers.com/pages/journeyintospace.htm I guessed at 1957 or 1958 in my first post; now I find they ran in Sept 1953! I can't believe I'm that old. Cheers |
No telly in my childhood but at 6.45pm on weekdays on the Light Programme and an omnibus edition on Saturday mornings we did have Dick Barton Special Agent with Jock and Snowy as his two side kicks. The signature tune of The Devil’s Gallop played by the Charles Williams Concert Orchestra had us breathless in anticipation.
|
I were in the navy when Journey Into Space was on but we still managed to listen to it and woe betide anyone who made a noise whilst it was on.
What was that song Lemmy kept on hearing? When its night time in Italy Its Wednesday over here |
Re: Old TV, Radio & Films
when i was a kid (not long ago really!) I used to watch
Raggie Dolls Fun House Care Bears Turtles Sesamy Street Button Moon Rainbow Rose and Jim Wizadora Them ducks where they used to jump in money- can't remeber the programme The two orange things that lived in a well in a garden! and loads more. They just don't make childrens programmes like they did. Now you can't tell what they are saying! ab:) |

Re: Old TV, Radio & Films
Someone way back in this thread mentioned Relayvision Radio.......I remember that. My Auntie lived in Walsden and she had NO ELECTRIC in her house but she had Relayvision Radio.....four Channels......I think it was 9d per week. I used to call it GAS radio.
I used to listen to 'Friday Night is Music Night' and Dick Barton.....we used to listen to lots of radio plays too.....and we would sit there in the firelight.....Auntie used to say there wasn't enough gas to run the light AND the radio. |
Re: Old TV, Radio & Films
In 1953 I used to work for UniRelays on Abbey Street and in all weathers we used to go around installing a third radio channel to customers district by district. Rishton, Huncoat, Clayton, Haslingden, Church, Oswaldtwistle and of course Accrington. It was Radio Luxembourg to complement the Home Service and Light Programme. With the advent of TV becoming available I was switched to installing TV aerials.
Apart from Dick Barton Special Agent my other favourite radio - sorry I mean wireless programme was Valetine Dyall’s Man In Black I think it was called. I have recently bought 23 volumes (4 shows per volume) of the famous Goon Show and haven’t stopped laughing since. Very useful URL djd – thanks! Although Journey Into Space is no longer listed. |

It was a very funny show and came onto tele later. And then there was silly Roy Castle with his drum playing and his damn trumpet. also I remember Charlie Drake.

Re: Old TV, Radio & Films

I remember "take your pick" and also "opportunity knocks" with Hughie Green.
I went to Malta with the Airforce in the early seventies and they had just got a program from the BBC that was being advertised all over the Island as a new religious program for Sunday nights, Malta was a very Catholic place and the locals were excited about the new TV program and the churches decided that they would have an early service so everyone could be home in time, 7.30, to watch.........Till Death us do Part.:D |
Re: Old TV, Radio & Films
I still love Round the Horne and Beyond our Ken, with Kenneth Horne, Kenny Williams, Hugh Paddick and Betty Marsden. Anyone else remember Chou En Ginsberg, the communist spy? or Jules and Sandy? and Rambling Sid Rumpo, the folk singer? I have quite a few of them on tape, and they still make me laugh.
Hancock's Half Hour was another classic, later transferred to television. Sunday afternoons - Family Favourites with lunch, Billy Cotton Band Show, The Navy Lark, Beyond our Ken, and at 3 o'clock Carousel, rounding off with Fluff and "Hello Pop-pickers" on Pick of the Pops. Sing Something Simple came later, always referred to in my family as "Sing Something Sinful". They never did, though. |
Re: Old TV, Radio & Films
Charlie Drake was so funny. I could only watch it when I was stopping at my Nanna's.
Loved take your pick. I remember listening to Paul n Barry Rhyan. I used to think they were dead good. Pinky & Perky. Ready Steady Go & Oh Boy. Were another two favorites of mine. Another Brilliant programme was Dixon Of Dock Green with Jack Warner. " Evening All " |
