Posy or mix?

Was down accy today and im going to have a go at making broth. Went to the market stall and asked the assistant have you got any broth posy's left? The girl looked at me and said posy? Whats that? Do you mean broth mix sorry but we've sold out. Anyway when i was deciding what else to get she said Excuse me but what is a broth posy? I've had a few people who have asked me that but whats a broth posy? Ive always called it a broth posy. So told her what my mum told me - that a broth posy is when the veg isnt chopped up - you have to chop it up yourself, mix is when its all chopped up for you. Is that right.

Didnt half make me feel old though!!! :D

Stuck it in here because when was the last time you could buy a broth posy - now its broth mix everywhere.

A posy is better than mix - you can clearly see bug bitten cabbage - ready chopped you cant see it

Re: Posy or mix?

wasn,t aware a broth posy was hard to get these days:confused: seems silly to me, but probably not to the traders, they can get rid of all the crap in a mix, says the cynical one.:(

When I moved from Accy in 1993 to my present abode in Bury, I was distraught to find that you could neither find broth mix/posy, but over here they call broth mix "pot herbs", exactly the same ingredients but a different name. Sent to try us or what???

I've never heard of a broth posy. I've always known it as broth mix.

Re: Posy or mix?

I always thought broth mix was the cut up root vegetables, and that the broth posies were the bunches of tied up herbs, that you bought with it?

garinda 13-10-2007 19:56

Re: Posy or mix?

I can't find any information on broth posies. The only herb I know for sure that is in them is Thyme.

garinda 13-10-2007 20:08

Re: Posy or mix?

A broth posy is really just an English bouquet garni, and is made up of Thyme, Parsley and a Bay Leaf, tied into a bunch, and added to flavour the broth stock.

Re: Posy or mix?

To me the broth posy was always the bunch of herbs too. My mum used to buy all the veg separate and then a bunch of herbs tied together which was the broth posy. She put it in the broth with the string dangling out so that the woody stalks could easily be fished out when the broth was cooked. Nowadays you don't seem to find the little bunches, just sprigs of thyme.

As I hate chopping hard root veg (I have problems with my hands) I don't object at all the the ready chopped broth mix. Pot herbs would really confuse me though.

I've heard of broth posy and mix but didn't know the difference between them, last time I made broth it was horrible, must've done something wrong.

Don't think you can go wrong with broth, you either like it or you don't IMHO. Though I love all vegetables broth is not my cup of tea.

Just thought it was tasteless, though cant remember putting any meat or herbs in it, it might just be that I prefer a tasty soup:)

Re: Posy or mix?

Everytime i make broth or try to make it (being the operative word) it goes wrong. Even when i made it under instruction from mum it went wrong. So god knows what this is going to turn out like - im doing it under instruction from spug!!! If im still alive this time tomorrow night - i havent poisoned myself!!! :D:D:D

At least i admit it - cant cook for peanuts. Why do you think spug cooked all the time when he was down - self preservation!!! lol :D

BERNADETTE 14-10-2007 22:11

Re: Posy or mix?
