I remember back in the 50's when my parents were really skint my Mum would try to kill us by making a meal that still makes me turn pale. Small dishes, cut up some stale cheese into them, top up with milk, crack an egg on top, salt and pepper then into the oven. Wait until the egg had turned to a piece of plastic then serve!!! It was a killer but it was that or nothing. Spare a thought for me Dad, he had to eat 2!!! Anybody else have this if so what was it called besides orride!!!

That is the famous 'cheese and egg'
Obviously she didn't do it right - needs to be baked 'on a tin plate' ;)

During rationing in the 40s our main meal was often
a lettuce leaf and a tomato - but then such items really tasted good
- not like a wet hankie and a ball of mush.

I still make that dish love it very tastey with brown bread and butter and a cup of tea however not with stale cheese.

got to be crumbly Lancashire cheese and served with a dollop of HP sauce , (prefered it cooked under the grill rather than in the oven) . good stuff :D :D

It wasnt my mum who made it was my dad ... dad could make 3 things ... a fry up (brilliant), fish (id eat the batter) or mash with boiled eggs in the middle ... and i hated it. Mum had to go to northern ireland and left me and my brother with my dad .. 1 sis was married and away and the other was at manchester polytechnic ... and she was away for 2 weeks ... and for 5 days dad made mash and eggs for tea ... never eaten a boiled egg since ..... and that was when i was 12!!!!

We had to eat whatever was put in front of us......the alternative was to go to bed hungry.
I went to bed hungry when it was kippers. sardines, pilchards.......and I drew the line at eating rabbit and hare.

I,d have died for egg and cheese when I was little. We had pobs for breakfast most days and I hated them. I do make egg and cheese for myself now that I,m "rich".

My Nana used to make bacon hotpot. It still makes me want to throw up all those years later. I had to sit at the table until I'd finished it and of course it was worse when it was cold and congealed. Thankfully the dog quite liked it and I would sneak as much as I could to him!

we never had the problem of not having any food in, when we used to ask her what was for tea my mum used to say to us 'its IFITS for tea...if we've got it you can have it, if we havent you cant ' :D

Believe this or not, I've never had it, cheese and egg that is:rolleyes:, weren't right keen on cheese when I was young, now I love it it don't like me to much:(

Our 'cheap' tea was Egg in a window - but never a chore eating it, I still love it.

Before toasters came along we used to eat a lot of burnt bread - we always used to know it was ready when the fire alarm went off. :D

I meant smoke alarm.

Lol, it still works in our house - I know the bacon is cooked just how Chris likes it when the smoke alarm goes off. At that point I have to run upstairs and wave my arms around a lot - well it makes the kids laugh.

In winter before we went out of the house to go to school, my mum had two deep dishes. In one was a kind of treacle and in the other a yellowy-green powder.
My brother called it 'Brimstone and Treacle'. and she forced us to eat it.
It was awful but I must say that we never suffered from colds or flu (not even now that we are 'ancient')

The same in our house but my dad used to make us have it and we never suffered colds or flu and still dont .
It must have been an old ossy recepie that was passed around or a miners cause he worked down the pit uuuuuuuuuh wasnt it horrible but not done us any harm.

Brimstone and treacle, is an old remedy for cleaning the blood, I was dosed with it often as a kid, boils, it cured them, never had boils since.

Just plain ordinary treacle in a small tin,
and add about two ounces of brimstone to it.

Brimstone is hard to come by these
days, since the govenment of the
country went paranoid some years back
its no longer available at chemists or
health shops, they think any one who buys
Sulpher is a bomb maker.

Ps if you do get some and mix it well in,
make sure you are outside if you break wind,
it will clear a room faster than a hand grenade.

When there was nothing else, my mom used to toss potatoes into the embers of the fire; and when the peel turned black, they were ready to eat .... great with salt ... tho' a little butter would have been nice.

I, honestly, can't remember being made to eat anything. I know I avoided bread, until I was about 8, then discovered a liking for it. Up to then I'd been eating just meat or fish and vegetables - I suppose that was, really, a very healthy diet but I was small and very thin, not good in the 1940s, they wanted chubby children in those days. I never quite made it.

There were certain meals my mother used to make specially for my dad; rabbit pie and pigs' trotters comes to mind. I wouldn't eat either of them (more on moral grounds than taste-wise) but there was always something different for us children.

I used to get dosed every morning. For a while it was Cod Liver Oil and Malt, which I absolutely loved, and later it was Rose Hip Syrup - mmmmmm! I still love Cod Liver Oil - yes, honestly - and I make my own Rose Hip Syrup. All the above were supposed to keep me healthy and, my mother prayed, stop me being so thin. It didn't work. Oh I was healthy enough but when Nature says you're gonna be skinny until you hit 45 - that's how it is.

My Mum would boil the sheep's head then take the brains out, mash them with salt and pepper and vinegar then make a sandwich of it!!!! Thankfully she was greedy and never made us eat it!!

Can remember a family who lived across the street from us , must have been the mid/late 50s when cheap plastic products first came on the market , the Mother decided to make a potato pie. In those days the white enamel washing-up basin (used in a slop stone) served a duel purpose as a cooking utensil for pratie pie/hot pot .
needless to say the 'new' plastic washing up bowl did not withstand use in the oven and the fire brigade made a visit much to the merriment of the local kids . :D :D

I remember when we had our 1st roast chicken Sunday dinner, that was in the late 50's. Home made spud pie until then. :)
