The Games we played
At the moment every time the ads are on TV its Game Boy, X Box, Wii Nintendo yet there was nothing like this when my age group were young, we had to make our own entertainment 52 weeks a year, along with the usual Cricket and Football, there all types of games we dreamt up, anyone remember playing Tinny, anyway what games did you lot play all those years ago

Re: The Games we played
think we all played.... nick nack, hopscotch,
some had a top and whip, we played french cricket you stood still with a stick in your hand and another player had to try and hit your legs with a ball.. of course you had to stop them, and if you was lucky you had a transistor radio, and listened to music out doors :theband: |
Re: The Games we played
My brother Mick organised a Subbuteo (can't remember spelling!) league. All boys except me. There were matches every week wherever a house was available. (I can remember playing in Johnny Omerod's house up New Lane). Every one represented a famous team (I was Bilbao). My brother was easily corrupted and if any of the boys complained about losing he would arrange a match against me! Obviously I always lost. Still these are happy memories.

I think I remember Tinny ... did it have something to do with an empty tin in a circle drawn in the dirt:confused: I've killed off a lot of brain cells in my life, but somewhere in my dusty memory I recall "tinny tin tin".
I used to love "Owzat" ... played with hexagonal (octagonal?) dies. |
Re: The Games we played
Cats Cradle - amusement for hours with just a piece of string

Re: The Games we played
kiss chase - now banned as some idiot somewhere will have declared it to be sexual assault
off ground tig - now banned because it encourages children to climb without aid of a safety net or helmet hide and seek - now obsolete because it isnt fair on teh fat kid that tries hiding behind a lamp post postmans knock - now banned because royal mail employees see it as their job and strike if kids are found to be doing it for free kerby - now banned because the council see it as gross miss use of a kerb knifey - now obsolete because apparently trees have feelings |

Used to love playing with two balls (Neil/Accyman .. bite your tongue !). Juggling them up against a wall. The task got harder as you had to do one overarm, then one under your legs, then drop one, turn around etc.
Sure it was done to a song .. 1,2,3 Alarah (no idea how to spell this), de, de, my sister Sarah ????? Or was this another game ? |

Re: The Games we played
had to smile the other day when I went out to the mail box , a bunch of the local kids were playing out with a skipping rope , the young lasses had their little brothers turning the rope and then trying to teach them to use/twirl two ropes ......first time I've seen it in years, needless to say I didn't recognize any of the songs , don't think "the big ship sails on the ally ally O " is well known in California
maybe a memory blank or a brain aneurysm , but I think that was one of the skipping songs the girls sang when I was kid .....maybe accy web users of a 'certain age' can set me straight ;) :D YouTube - Big Ship Sails - Kate Rusby |
Re: The Games we played
Think this was sung to some sort of 'catching' game Steeljack. Like two peope make an arch and people walk under it and are caught. Or was it the one where someone leant against a wall with one arm and you walked under that in a joined up line ... maybe that was to the 'London Bridge' song ??
Haha .. half a memory better than none I suppose. |

Re: The Games we played
back on thread...hopscotch, whip and top(and you were really poor if you couldn't afford a few chalks with which to decorate your spinning top).......five stones.....also known as jacks........you could buy this game for about 6d......but you could play it with a small rubber ball and five little pebbles( picked off someones newly pebble dashed house :D)...Knock and run......oh the list is endless.
We only went home if it went dark or we were hungry....and we played out in all weathers........I don't ever remember catching cold. We were active....and most of us were skinny. |

Re: The Games we played
sevenses ... with a tennis ball .. used to drive the owners of the house nuts .. with the ball banging against their house. catch the ball, if you drop it you have to give the others a go .. or if playing on your own then restart at the beginning of that number .. 7's was just plain catch, 6's was letting it bounce once, 5 was bouncing it 5 times, 4 chucking at the floor to bounce against the wall, 3 bounce once and then pat it to the wall and catch it, 2's was chuck it at the wall and bounce it twice then catch it, 1's was chucking it at the wall and turning round while it was in flight, then restart again clapping once ...
tig ... kiss chase ... tyre/rope swing across the brook, |
Re: The Games we played
As said above kid's are not allowed to play the games we used to play, they are prevented from playing them and they have nowhere to play them either.
The streets are too dangerous now with too many high speed vehicles on them, the areas that kids used to play on have all gone because they have been developed or just plain removed. What games the kids do play they just get in trouble for, they get shouted at and told to sod off elsewhere, they cannot even just hang around with nowt to do as they get moved on. No wonder they prefer to be inside (where its safer & warm) where we their parents can keep an eye on them & stop them coming to harm etc. If only my youngest would go outside & play, although not quite just outside as we live on a main road I don't want him run over, & the nearest area has a little kiddies park in it, not much use for bigger kids. The area more of use to him is just a basketball court or perhaps a BMX track, neither what he wishes to do, any other kids that are around he does not know so yes he spends his fun time on his computer or Xbox. In fact given that he has always been a withdrawn & quiet lad using the Xbox (live) and the PC with live chat has made him more chatty online, he has loads of mates he talks to every day & has completely come out of his shell as well as building some excellent skills that will help him in his later career life. In fact using the PC really helped him with a lot of things, he has excellent grammar skills all developed by using the PC, I have seen logs of his online conversations & they are way above those of others. So while they may not be playing the games that us older ones did, the games they do play are equally as good, ball games help with coordination - you should see the coordination from playing video games - its brill. And who's to blame for our kids not having anywhere to play or anything to do? The adults.... As for football etc, its fine when your in an environment for football like a school playing field with suitable adults around you but the moment you go elsewhere your told to sod off again or you get adult thugs come & ruin it for you. |
Re: The Games we played
Well said mattylad - yes we had an idyllic childhood - my first banana in '47 or so, my first candy floss that year in Weston -s - Mare. There were pervs around but we kids stuck together and looked after each other. We all went out in a crowd and we all stayed together - No, we weren't angels but we were happy children.
