Pie shops in Accy

Reading about the king of chippies (LENS of ranger St) reminded me of Pie shops, does anyone remember the Pie shop on the corner of Richmond St/Higher Antley St ? cannot remember the shops name. The owner supposedly had the biggest cat in England that sat in the shop on a box, man it was massive it was the size of a medium size dog.As a kid was given the job of getting a quick tea for the family used to get pies and peas and gravy in a bowl .In those days you could not have called this fast food more like slow food.
Was there any more in Accy? and also were they any better than this one.

Mrs Almonds Shop.......at the end of Marsden St.......diagonally opposite the Woodnook pub.
We used to go there late on a Saturday lunchtime and she would give us all the boiled spuds that were left, and we used to buy(at a knockdown price) any meat pies/steak puddings/potatoe pies.....and any squashed cakes she would give us to eat on the way home.......She knew that it was hard work feeding seven children, and that Ma had not much money......her gifts of food sometimes kept us going.

You're thinking of Pennocks, John. That cat was so big that it actually made the Guinness Book of Records at one point. Yep, the pies were great! Remember their homemade ice lollies too?

That was Mrs. Peanock (not sure how that is spelt) and she did Lancashire Hotpot, didn't know about the pies!

I think that was called Mona's...but if anyone knows different I will stand corrected.

There was also a very good pie shop at the top of Little Blackburn Road....they did delicious corned beef pasties.......and I loved their Russian cake.......I once asked what was in it and the lady who served in the shop said I shouldn't ask....that was because it was all the off cuts of cakes, mixed with Jam and then icing on top.

There was a very good pie shop and bakery at the corner of Spring Hill Road and Pickup street. They did great pies and sometimes very large pies in 18 inch diameter enamel bowls when you wanted to feed the masses.

I knew Billy Bowden very well when he had his shop on Warner street.
He had two sons Peter and Phillip. Phillip worked for Bill and Peter had his own pie shop at the bottom of Hood street. When I came to Accrington in 1966/7 I was a good mate of Peter and when he got banned from driving he asked me to work for him driving his car about and doing a bit in the shop making pies. The car was a Vauxhall Cresta reg number PBV 62. He should have kept the number when he changed his car it could read Peter Boden Vehicle.
Peter got all his pudding off Billy and Billy took some pies and bowls of peas from Peter.
Phillip used to come round every morning to deliver the puddings and pick up the pies and peas.
I ahd full use of Peter's car and also did a bit of repping for him trying to sell his pies to shops and pubs. He had a good selection of customers in Accrington, Burnley, Ossy and Church. I got a bit fed up and started work driving for Batty Holt tours Blackburn and then went to Gilbraith Tankers for 30 years till I retired in 1998.

The strange thing abouth the job is the fact that never ever in my life have I eaten meat fish or poultry as it makes me ill but I worked in a pie shop and even convinced potential customers that I had one every day, goodness knows what would have happened if they had asked me to try one.

It was a corner shop at the bottom end of Hood street opposite the side of the New Brewery. The side with the door was hood street and the side with no door was Maudsley street. This was in 1966/8. It must have been number 2, I lived at 22 further up, same side.

I was talking to a chap only a few weeks ago when we were having our cars valetted and he said Peter was home for a few weeks but will have gone back overseas now.

Didn't 'Greens' have a good reputation at one time for their pies ?

Think they had more than one shop .. can remember they had one on Norfolk Street for a while.

Did they go more into some sort of wholesale/contract work later ? Can remember seeing their vans about.

Does anyone remember the pie shop on the corner of Lower Antley and Grimshaw St. It was owned by Jack & Millie Brennan, then they sold it to the Kelly's. It was a terraced house and what would have been the front room was a cafe area. Wagon drivers used it a lot. You could also get good pie & peas from Kendals Hotel kitchen. The entrance was down some steps at the front of the hotel at the corner of Fox St & Blackburn Rd, opposite the Imperial.

I was wondering about that and though I am getting a bit tatty in years I still couldn't recall any shops on Horne street, Riley's snooker were on the side opposite the houses. There was a corner shop lower down Meadow street from the Royal Oak with Guiseppe the tailor opposite it. He made me a few suits in the past and also made a few for the snooker lads when they visited Riley's, Dennis Taylor wore one when he won the world final.
Peter Boden employed about three women (including my wife to be) and a man in the bakery and only last week we were in Barden Mill and a lady came up to my wife and started chatting, she was a van driver for Peter and recognised my wife after all those years.
I looked on Hood street two weeks ago and thank goodness I got out while the going was good and we got a very decent price for our house which was one of the three bigger ones on the street.

One chap lived in the house attached to the bakery and it's door was on Maudsley street, Tony was his name and he started dabbling in second hand ornaments etc and I lost track of him untill a couple of years ago. he lives in one of the grand converted houses on the right a few hundred yards from Portfield bar lights. He has a nice Jaguar and his wife a BMW sports convertable. Big change from Maudsley street eh.

In the early 80's there was a confectioners on Blackburn Rd, West End called Thomas Ashaski (hope I spelt it right). He made what I can only describe as the worlds finest Meat & Onion pies. When slapped between each side of one of his buttered teacakes (yes i still call 'em teacakes even though I live in Bolton) these were "to die for", "manna from heaven". In fact the day I mashed the pies for the workforce of Arnold Rileys in the spokes of my bike I very nearly did die for 'em. lol.
