In Town Tonight

Intro was followed by the voice of a newspaper seller calling out "In town tonight," as traffic circled the statue of Eros in central London. Remember Hobley interviewing Robert Mitchum when he was passing through during the filming of Ryan's Daughter which was set in Ireland. The author J.B. Priestley was on the same program. 'In Town Tonight' and 'War in the Air' were very popular programs at the time. Recall seeing film footage of Belson and Austwich which scared the pooh out of me as a gullible teenager.

the thing about the 1960s "All our Yesterdays " was it was only showing stuff 25 years old ... (historical stuff to us kids at the time ) if they did a program like that today it would be 1985 ......not really history to me or other "coffin dodgers" , wondered what our parents/grandparents generation thought of the program  ;) :D

well steelie - they projected that 'in the future' we would only have to take a tablet to supplement our diet - so no need for food! - in actual fact it has been the opposite - the Western world face a health crisis for obesity - hence the onslaught of diabetes type 2 -
at the time I thought the programme was quite innovative - time proved otherwise - you can hark back to Nostradamus who (in the same vein) thought he could 'see' into the future - unfortuanetly another charlaton - I say leave it to the scientific pioneers who because of their strict discipline of PROOF will (only slowly) show us the way.

You've got me stirring the old grey matter, Jaysay. I too recall a program that started with the pulsing radio mast at Alexandra Palace, but no matter how much I stir, I can't for what's left of the life in me come up with the name of the program. Could it have been ITN news?

Have me mentioned the early Quatermas series? As an impressionable teenager I recall being scared sh**less by the contents of a huge globe featured in one particular episode. The first series depicted an astronaut returning from space and turning into a cactus by a fungal growth. There have been films and remakes since, but none ever matched the suspense of original(s).

Re: What did you watch when you was a nipper?

I loved the old black and white Sherlock Holmes films, with the part played by Basil Rathbone MC. No cinematic or small screen portrayal has yet come anywhere near his definitive interpretation of Conan Doyle's great detective. Nevertheless, the BBC have just spent an awful lot of money on their latest version of Holmes and in about an hours time we shall see the results. All I know is the setting is no longer late Victorian London but today's multi-cultural garbage bin.

I can only await what trendy mess they will make of this. No doubt Doctor Watson will be a black lesbian but probably in paying lip service to the original books she will be suffering post-traumatic stress syndrome as a result of her service in Britains 4th Afgan War. Holmes, will of course, be a druggie - this time on Ectasy and the Met Police will be incapable of detecting and arresting villians because they spend their time beating up. killing and shooting innocent bystanders.

Needless to say, I shall switch this on but I shall have the vomit bucket at the ready. I anticipate no more than five minutes of this nonsense before the said utensil is used and then the contents thrown over the TV, at which point I'm off down the pub.

Yeah - Basil was the best Holmes though his Watson (Nigel somebody?) was a bit too much of a buffoon caricature.

My first look at telly was also on a 9" b&w at a neighbour's house. I think we got the giggles because the picture was quite distorted & she chucked us out! 1950-ish.

I thought the on screen Chemistry between Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce was absolutely superb, and overall by far the best pairing. Bruce may have played the part a little different than the books indicated, but i think it really worked, and all others need to be measured against them!

Well chaps, I made about 9 1/2 minutes of Sherlock before I gave up in disgust and went for a pint. I think my original diagnosis was more or less correct, other than the black lesbian bit - but even then there appeared to be a few of them popping up in the background. Still, even the great detective made the odd error in his deductive reasoning.

Which reminds me - who remembers the very first episode of Doctor Who? And who remembers the first episode of the series when it was brought back about 6 or 7 years ago co-starring the drunken smoker Ms Piper at the point when she encountered a piccy of the good Doctor stood on a grassy verge, looking at something that has just happened. None of the TV critics picked this up at the time, but some of you may know what I'm talking about. What was it?

Must admit Tealeaf, after 10 minutes of quick dialogue, short changing shots and trying to adjust to someone called Sherlock in the present day, (along with the fact that if you have a gammy leg, then the walking stick is held on the opposite side to support it) I decided not to like it, however, I did persevere and by the end gave the thumbs up that I absolutely loved it.

You couldn't even make the name up of the actor playing the title role :Benedict Cumberbatch. He is terrific.

Looking forward to the next one.

used to play hopscotch
one of the songs went -
ring a ring of roses a pocket full of poses - ' I think relates to the great plague of London in the 18th century.
another one which bemuses me -
'some talk of Alexandrer and some of Hercules
of Hector and Lysander and such great men of these
but of all the men there ever was
there's none that can compare
with a oh and a ah and ee and haa
as the -------------???

oh the grand old Duke of York he had ten thousand men
he marched them up to the top of the hill and he marched them down again
and when they were up they were up -----------------------

(nursery rhymes got us talking - and thinking ??)

Bootsy and Smudge(Snudge??) Was watching an old 60's movie this afternoon and Alfie Bass turned up. I seem to remember him in an old comedy show back in the early 60's where he was in the army with Smudge/Snudge. Not going to look it up on Google as I'm sure my chums on here can help me! Also in the film was a woman who was also in a comedy where she was in a union and always blowing her whisle shouting "everyone out!!" No Google, who remembers?

The first thing I watched - the dot in the middle of the screen.
Returned from a cycling holiday in North Wales to find there was a TV in the corner. Mum & Dad were away on holiday, so switched it on - bright dot in the middle of the screen as it was late at night, what a disappointment

There was no TV when I was a nipper, however my family used to listen to "Itma" on the radio. I myself ried to play "Dustmans Knock" (similar to Postmans Knocl - but dirtier) with the local females = ah those were the days

There was another western series starring Steve McQueen as 'The Rifleman'.

Then Hugh O'Brien in the long running 'Wyatt Earp' series.

I just loved the TV Westerns. Far superior to the sci-fi rubbish that kids are into today. But then again, that's just my opinion. It's probably more in tune with what's prevalent at the time.

Chuck Conners was the rifleman

I think it was about Nov. in '61. We had just moved into a flat in Weston-S-uper-Mare. Bryan Blessed as Fancy Smith, Jock Wier, and the Irish one. Think the DI moved on to his own series.

People who stared in Z Cars and went on to other things James Ellis ( the irish one Barrie:D) Frank Windsor, Stratford Johns, Collin Welland, the series start Jan 61 and ran until Sept 78
