Cobbled streets
When I was a kid, my own street and heaps of surrounding streets were all cobbled. Some recent pictures I have seen have my own street all tarmac....I wonder when this change took place and whether there are still any cobbled streets around?

Re: Cobbled streets
My street was cobbled and flagged when I were a kid, I think approx 20years ago as I can remember it!
It used to be murder on your bike going up and down!! ;) |
Re: Cobbled streets
Our street is cobbled, the tarmac has only recently been removed, it looks so much better, we live in a conservation area I can't believe they ever put tarmac on it! It's Rhyddings Street in Oswaldtwistle.

Re: Cobbled streets
The bottom of Carter St is still cobbled
|
Re: Cobbled streets
I think they are "setts"
|
Re: Cobbled streets
Thats correct cobbles are stone washed stones from river for example.
|
Re: Cobbled streets
Most are still there, under the tarmac.
You can see them, through the potholes. |
Re: Cobbled streets
the council tore up the cobbles on my back alley a few years ago and sold them to god knows who. They must have got lots of money for them though if it covered the cost of tearing up a back alley and tarmacing it.

It was great fun as a kid getting yer magnifying glass out & melting the tar between the stones, well it was until I got home & got shouted at off ma & pa for being filthy ! Thats probably why they got rid of the cobbled streets too many kids getting smacked & shouted at for going home dirty after spending hours melting tar !!:eek::eek::eek: |

Re: Cobbled streets
the good thing about cobled streets is that boy racers have to go slow in their lowered corsas etc or their front spoliers get torn off or their oversized rear end exhausts :D

Who said the streets of Accrington weren't paved with gold!

Re: Cobbled streets
And on top of that, a good cobbled street enhances the intrinsic value of any house on which it stands. It both looks good and it feels good.
It's just a shame that that fact has not got through to the idiots in HBC. Just out of interest, Talented, I notice that ANZAC day this year falls on Easter Monday. Will you get an extra day off in lieu? I expect that you will, which will mean only two days at work before you're on another holiday for the wedding of your future King & Queen. Knowing you lot, you'll probably take a months holiday - lovely! Still, I expect you'll need it for all the clearing up you will have to do after the poor weather you've had. |

Re: Cobbled streets
They tarmaced Union Road in Ossy over 50 years ago, side streets a bit longer, remember when I was a lad sitting on the kerb edge pulling up the tar they used to fix the stone sets when it was warm it seeped into the gutters, the old lady must have used pounds of butter getting the stuff of my clothes and me:D

Re: Cobbled streets
I suspect not many people can put cobbles/setts down now. Its much easier to use tarmac when you have a water leak or need to install pipes cables etc. They have still not repaired the setts at the top of Rhyddings Street at the park gates. Probably trying to find old Bert who can still do it :D

Re: Cobbled streets
I remember when Lime Road was done in setts, with perhaps half a dozen cars parked there!
Tarmac has no character and as for the number of cars!!!!!!!!!!!!! (I think the owner of the house behind Speedway Garage is going in for some kind of car-parking world record!) |
