Historical events! Where were you?

I am asking where were you at any historical events that have occured.

I rememember the Lockerbie incident. We'd been out on the works do; about 30 of us have a meal in a resteraunt and then onto some clubs. I recall about 2 in the morning getting a cab and the driver told me and my girlfriend "there's been a massive plane crash in Scotland!"

To this day whenever the Lockerbie event is mentioned I always remember where I was when I heard it.

Can't remember where I was in 1066 but I do remember a mate of mine called Norman wasn't very popular with the locals.

Re: Historical events! Where were you?

I heard about the Lockerbie air disaster on a radio newsflash about 7Pm,
The tanker was parked at home ready to be loaded with Caustic potash for Irvine, I was going to be passing Lockerbie about noon the day after. I was expecting to be turned of on to the A75 to go via Dumfries
As I reached the junction where the A75 leaves the A74 the police were just removing the cones and was letting the traffic though.
I continued up the A74 and the sight I saw at Lockerbie remains to this day, there was only one carriageway open and the police had a big sign saying "40 MPH minimum", they were waving traffic though and making sure there were no sightseers with camera.
There was smoke still rising from different places around and I distinctly remember the remains of a car on what was left of the Southbound carriageway.
It was a very eerie feeling which was still there on the Friday morning when I returned.

I hear about the twin towers bombing in the tractor cab when I was slurry spreading by the Calder at Dunkirk farm, the farmer called me in to his house to watch on TV.

I used to live in Cape Canaveral and would go to the beach at the end of our street. Always went there to watch the shuttles go up as the range was only just down the coast by about 2 miles. Had my camera going as the Challenger exploded above us, ran back to the apartment and watched the news from then on. Got a photo of the shuttle just before and just after they passed on!!!

Not everyone's idea of a historical event, but it certainly was for me -

April 15th, 2006, 16.50. The "FT" sign went up on the TV screen at Woking v Accrington Stanley, which meant we were back in the football league after 44 years in exile.

Actually shed a few tears, silly owd sod that I am, looked up and said "there you go, dad, we're back!"

I was on a train between Sorrento and Pompeii when I heard that Gorbachov was under house arrest.

The coup failed but was the start of the breakup of the Soviet Union which happened rapidly after that.

Re: Historical events! Where were you?

9/11 I was in a charity shop in Leamington Spa when I heard people talking about what was happening in NYC.

Diana - we were on a campsite on the Pembrokeshire coast when we heard about it on the radio on the Sunday morning. We then went off for the day to a reconstructed Iron Age village. It started to rain and we went into one of the thatched round houses. There was a group of people in there sitting round a fire in the middle of the hut, talking about Diana, and it struck me things haven't changed much in 2000 years. They could have been Iron Age folk talking about their latest harvest rather than twentieth century people talking about a dead princess.

Assassination of JFK - heard about this when I was coming home from the pictures.
Diana's death - had just come home from a jaunt away with Ma - himself woke me up to tell me.
9/11.....I was at the hairdressers and thought it was an advert for some disaster movie or another...was totally shocked to see it was the news channel.

Oh Dear! Someone is very, very confused. It must be the waccy-baccy.

The last day of the N.H.C. is always the August Bank Monday; Di decided not to wear a seatbelt and so died in the early hours of sunday morning. Most people in the UK were fully aware by midday sunday...and you say you did not find out until tuesday, after the last day of the carnival. Most peculiar.

Yeh I was aware that the Notting Hill Carnival was the weekend before Di's death - but for me both events seem to be associated in my own mind - regardless of the fact that Diane died the Saturday/Sunday morning after, which would have been from the Monday which is the biggest night of the carnival = 6 days!

Glad you awake enough to have recognised this fact! :D

I was in the house doing my homework one evening when my Dad came in from a meeting and said that John F. Kennedy had been assassinated.
I was in church on Sunday morning when the person doing the prayers of intercession asked us to pray for the family of Princess Diana. When he came back to his seat I asked him what he meant and he said that she'd been killed in a car crash.
I was working in the office when my colleague's student daughter rang up and said that a plane had crashed into the Twin Towers on 9/11. She then kept ringing her mum with updates. She didn't seem to be sure at first whether it was a real event she was witnessing.

It must have been a really drunken (high?) session if you can lose 5 or 6 days between one event and link it with another!

Have you considered what it is you've done to create such large gaps in your memory?

Rubbish - what I said that in my brain the event of geting pished at Notting Hill Carnival on Monday is always associated in my mind with the day Diana died 6 days latter. Perhaps because falling asleep in a park is something I've done twice in my life.

So there is no gap in my memory! that said Less are you telling me that you remember every single day, week, month of your life and that you remember all events exactly day for day, all details of what happened since the day you were born. I don't think so.

It is normal for us to remember key events of importance and often these are associated with other key invents that may have occured at a similar time. I never said these two event were on the same day.

You are correct, it is normal for US to remember key events and associate them with something else however a gap of 6 days between those events? What were you using to lose that long?

July 1997 -was on holiday touring Brittany in a camper van with my husband and boys. We'd stopped at Perros -Guirrec a gorgeous place wih a fantastic beach. Went in to do a bit of shopping in a little grocers while they were on the beach and saw a newspaper for the first time in a week to find that Gianni Versace had been shot dead.

You asked us "where were you at any historical events that have occurred". Obviously, any normal person would take that to mean where were you at the time you heard the news of this event - not six days later. You've been caught out talking crap, but you're far too arrogant to admit it. Still, that's par for the course with you.

I was in Preston on 9/11 working on some software. My boss, came and stood behind me watching what I was doing. I told him how annoying it was, and he said he had nothing to do - all the systems he used for stock trading had stopped working - and that never happens.

Got an email through on a mailing list saying that the WTC had been bombed (again), quickly followed by another to say it was a small plane. Most news sites got flooded and inaccessible quite quickly after that - the only one that seemed to keep working was Ananova.

When Beslan happened, we'd just moved to Great Harwood. That always sticks in my memory more than 9/11.

No, course you don't, because most events in your life are pretty mundane. But you often remember where you were and what you were doing at the moment you heard the news of a memorable event.
