Huncoat Youth Club
Hi all, I am a newcomer to the Accrington Web but an elderly gent of the village of Huncoat, I have lived in the village for sixty years this year.
A mate and I were reminiscing recently about the youth club that used to be held in huncoat junior school in the 1950/60s, the topic was the name of the leader, organizer, whatever they were called in those far of days. All that we could remember was that he was a large approachable guy who I think came from Burnley, is anyone on this web blessed with a better memory than two elderly gentlemen of Huncoat.:):):) |
Re: Huncoat Youth Club
Careful Taddy, I used to go to Huncoat youth club in the late 50s and I don't consider myself ELDERLY. Now what was your question?
|
Re: Huncoat Youth Club
I have sent one off to Ralph & Amy Bracewell, who probably attended HYC
|
Re: Huncoat Youth Club
Hi Bob, would you by any chance be related to Charlie Dobson who lived in the so called Russel houses on Burnley road?, he had a son who was a mate of mine at Woodnook school; name of Brian.
Yours Taddy |
Re: Huncoat Youth Club
Come on people, surely i'm not the only one on this web site who went to Huncoat youth club in the late 50s, early 60s,Who was the big guy who used to run the club ? :punsure:

Re: Huncoat Youth Club
Teddy, were you at Woodnook school at the same time as Roy Wallace and Patrick Varley?
|
Re: Huncoat Youth Club
Taddy, the only "old" person I can remember at the youth club was Ronnie Howland who was also a teacher at the tech up Ossy. There are some photo's on here if you search back through the archives. Incidentally we had a great football team there in the late 50s.

I used to see Patrick on the bus to Blackburn sometimes. Not sure if he recognised me in uniform though.

No Cashy, it was on the early morning bus....ten minutes to six....I was going on duty.....and it was the bus from Burnley(though he could have hopped on at the Load of Mischief).

Re: Huncoat Youth Club
I can remember the name 'taddy'.....not sure if taddy would know my brothers....Mick and Peter.....strange though I can't put a face to the name. Not like me at all. Have a good memory for names and faces.

It's only the other day I was looking at the Woodnook football team photograph and I have said many times that I must take it down to the Accy Observer office and get them to print it in their paper. I am presuming rightly or wrongly that Pilkington is your married name, if so what is the surname of your brothers Mick and Peter? Yours, Taddy, 67 years old white haired on the outside but 21 and pure gold on the inside. |

Cannot remember a Ronnie Howland unfortunately |
Re: Huncoat Youth Club
Taddy, you are right....Pilkington is my married name. My maiden name was Duxbury......and if you are 67 then it is likely that you would have been in the same year as me at Woodnook.

Re: Huncoat Youth Club
Oh, yes and we lived up on top of Riley's Hill in Accrington.

You say that you have a good memory for names, My moniker is Mick Hadfield. my sister Linda also went to Woodnook but she is two years younger than me but you may remember her. |
Re: Huncoat Youth Club
Yes, the name rings a bell....and Linda too.
Riley's Hill is near Priestley Clough.....where we used to do Cross Country runs.....Bullough Park is that way too. |
Re: Huncoat Youth Club
Cross country runs with Milton Suthers, Oh the pain but I still reckon he was a good teacher, P.E. and maths, shame there arn't more like him today.
Past my bedtime, Ah well, stay happy, Yours Taddy. |
Re: Huncoat Youth Club
He always scared me to death......maths was my worst nightmare.
Mr Allen was headmaster. Miss Croston for Art, Mrs Thompson for RI. Mr Gale was form teacher...he was a big chap who would squeeze himself into a little White Renault. It was Mrs Whittaker who took the girls on those cross country runs, up past Nelson's farm.....she used to watch through Binocs to see who,was smoking on the way back......smoke? It took me all my time to run and breathe! |

Re: Huncoat Youth Club
I have copied a photograph of the Woodnook football team in the 1961/62 season and I am going to ask my good lady,(or even the wife),:D, if she will take it into the accy observer office on friday when she is down in the big city shopping. Hopefully they will print it in the paper the following week,(if of course that is how it works).
Stay happy as ever, Yours Taddy.:):) |
Re: Huncoat Youth Club
Taddy, I am sure the Accrington Museum in the Arndale would also like a copy.

Re: Huncoat Youth Club
Taddy, Did you know Harry Anderton or Colin Sager. Both men would be in their early eighties if still alive today. Both lived in Huncoat when school boys.

As to your question,as far as I am aware Colin is still (wick),as they used to say in Lancs, Wick obviously meaning still alive, but then you probably already know that. Colins lad, also called Colin, (alias the wild man), also lives in the village on Station Road where is father has lived for as long as I can remember. Harry Anderton I am afraid I cannot bring to mind, the only Anderton I can think of was a Henry(I think), he was a pattern maker at the Redac brickworks in 1960s. Hope this helps, please stay in touch, stay happy, Yours Taddy. |

Re: Huncoat Youth Club
Hi Irene, although I have lived in the village for sixty years and known (of) Colin for most of my adult life, we have never actually acknowledged one another in conversational terms. Seems strange I know, I have no doubt that he knows my name as well I know his but our paths have never crossed so to speak.
I will try to get the information you have asked for about Harry Anderton, if he is the person that I recollect, then a good friend of mine (Dennis Maguire) may well know or have known him. When I started work at the Redac in 1962, there was a lady who worked in the office and married the under manager, (who'es name escapes me);I am nearly sure that she was called Irene, is it too much of a coincidence that you are one and the same girls ? Please keep in touch and stay happy as ever, Taddy.:):):) |
Re: Huncoat Youth Club
I may have made a mistake in my last post, I have just recalled an Irene Butterworth that worked in the Redac office at the time but as far as I know she still lives in the village. Yours Taddy.

Hazel (my good lady), sometimes! called into the Accrington museum yesterday and dropped off the photograph of the Woodnook football team of the 1961/62 season, so if you want to call in and drool over young men in shorts now is your chance;By the way, I am the short house goalkeeper on the back row.:D:D. As ever, stay happy, Yours Taddy. |

Hello Irene, I have managed to get the information that you wanted, I received a phone call only ten minutes ago from my mate who has seen Colin Sagar in the last couple of days and he is ok; the other news is not as good I am afraid, Harry,(Henry) Anderton who was a pattern maker at Redac brickworks and lived in a cottage on Spouthouse Lane, passed away many years ago. If I can be of further help don't hesitate to contact me. Yours Taddy. |
