'Boil in the bag' kippers
Remember when a bloke used to come into pubs selling seafood from a tray ? I bought 'boil in the bag' kipper fillets with a knob of butter in. Can these still be bought ? Where from ? The name 'Kershaw's' comes to my mind, but I feel sure that MacFisheries also sold them

Re: 'Boil in the bag' kippers
Yes, You can still get them....though I would rather eat my own eyeballs.
Himself likes kippers and buys these for himself....I can still smell them days after he has eaten them......rank. |
'Boil in the bag' kippers
Asda sell them.

Re: 'Boil in the bag' kippers
Reyt . I'll pick some up and get them between two slices of bread. I cannot manage the real thing - I cannot stand the bones.

Re: 'Boil in the bag' kippers
Also recently in Tesco - but were not as good as those I used to get in the IOM.

I'm sure you can buy kipper fillets without all the bones for grilling or frying, much better.]Try Morrisons fish counter, I think that's where I saw them. |
Re: 'Boil in the bag' kippers
I'll have a look at these too. I like the soggy bread. They don't need chewing - a good suck does it.

Buy some crab sticks

Re: 'Boil in the bag' kippers
These are good, smoked traditionally not chemically like some of the supermarket kippers. Not too far from you.
Kippers direct from the smokehouse. Buy traditional kippers or boneless fillets. |

Re: 'Boil in the bag' kippers
I'd love to have tried them but the shipping costs more than the kippers- £7.84 for a couple of kippers??
I'll nip down to the village fishmonger and see what he has. |
Re: 'Boil in the bag' kippers
Strange coincidence- rooting through the freezers just now I found a couple of ready meals, can't remember where or when we got them.
Guess what - they are Kershaws of Southport so they're still going strong, just changed their product line. Haven't a clue what they're like but handy for emergencies. Oh, edit, few minutes later-looked them up and read the reviews- might throw them away! |

I will come round for my tea one day next week, Margaret. Get the best china out.
|
Re: 'Boil in the bag' kippers
Perhaps if I'd ordered a few packs the shipping wouldn't be so bad. But they're still 'boil in the bag'?
Please let us know what they're like, Margaret. I love a good kipper! |

Re: 'Boil in the bag' kippers
They were very tasty but very salty - that was OK for me but some people might not like that.

Re: 'Boil in the bag' kippers
I'm sure to enjoy them in your company , Margaret

Re: 'Boil in the bag' kippers
Oh, and those little bags of shrimps with vinigar, I can nearly taste them now. I can't get kippers here in Vietnam, I am flying to see a mate in Abu Dahbi next month, he has a freezer full of kippers waiting for me. Suppose thats a bit to far from Accy for you, LOL.

Re: 'Boil in the bag' kippers
You can still get them in all the supermarkets. What happened to the boil in the bag curry's? Well I recall one day, (sometime in the mid 90's) they just stopped making them without even consulting the consumer.

Re: 'Boil in the bag' kippers

Re: 'Boil in the bag' kippers
Haven't got to fishmongers yet but I was in Asda yesterday- there they were- Scottish kippers, boil in the bag. Worth trying?
Tried them today- good news, not too much smell when we opened the bag- that's because there was hardly any taste either. Soft, mushy, almost tasteless- awful! Threw the other bag away. Only good point for you, Bob, no bones. Don't try them, you live near MargaretRs supply, have a run over and try them. |

My raising of this has attracted 30 answers. I thank each and every one of you.

And a very British discussion it was too! :o

Re: 'Boil in the bag' kippers
Many years ago I used to play domino'es in the now defunct Lion pub in Huncoat. one night an old miner known as Bobby Kennerdy and his mate were discussing these new fangled (cook in a bag) fish.
"The wife gets them for me and they are very tasty", remarked the friend, " I will get her to pick up an extra one for you to try". After presenteing Bob with the said fish and saying "here try these", he asked the day after what Bobs verdict was; "Bl--dy terrible", was the reply, "I threw them out for the birds and even they wouldn't touch them". "I put the pan on, waited till the fat got hot and then put the bag in, all that happened was the bag melted and made a right mess of the frying pan, I'll not be having them things again" I realise this must sound like a joke but I can assure everyone it is perfectly true, I was there at the time. Stay happy, Your's Taddy. |

Re: 'Boil in the bag' kippers
Resurrecting this thread for Bob, don't know if he ever managed to satisfy his craving(for Kippers, I mean!)
Bought some kipper fillets from Morrisons fresh fish counter yesterday. Fried them and they were lovely- nice texture, not salty, lovely taste not too strong and no bones! We'll definitely have them again, wouldn't touch the boil in a bag rubbish now. Give them a try, Bob. |
