Old Accy - Sandy Lane
 

I used to live in Sandy Lane from 1938 to 1965 after which I moved to Africa for some years before eventually settling down in Skipton where I now live. As a young man, I well remember making many walks up Sandy Lane on nice summer days into the countryside past High Riley and Blue Slates Farm, along the side of Hameldon Hill and then descending into Dunnockshaw and eventually Loveclough in Rossendale (where I worked for several years at the Loveclough Print Works of the CPA). Does anyone know whether this walk would still be possible today as I would love to attempt it again sometime if I'm still fit enough?

Yes the walk is still possible. I live up Sandy Lane and have walked parts of it.

I lived with my grand-parents in Chapel Street in the forties & fifties,one day i suggested that "Our gang" should go crab apple-ing on Lord & Lady Higham's estate on Sandy Lane,we were caught by the game keeper & taken to Lady Higham,to me she looked like Queen Victoria,she looked at me & said that I'd obviously been led on by the boys I was allowed to leave + apples,I had to hide for days from the rest of "Our gang"

The Plantation Street 'gang' in the 60's spent many happy days over those hills. Gamblers Caves was always somewhere to explore. We swam in the lodges on the Coppice and had our bonfires on the pens on Barn field Street.
We congragated on the bench outside St Paul Church most evenings and Ardent Hall was a regular haunt. Childhood memories😊

A little more info dev-on, I lived on Plantation St in the late 50s early 60s, St. Pauls scouts, youth dances at the school, lots of time at Arden Hall, Essies toffee shop. I took papers for Sugdens and lived on the corner of Percy St.

Remember Essies you could buy five number 6 cigs in a sweet bag lol. The chippy on plantation street was brilliant and the Ledger was the pub my uncle used along I believe with Jo Mortimer?

Arthur could be spotted in the Welcome Inn, and Colliers as well as the St Ledger, in later years he moved houses to the street off Burnley Rd, by the Boars Head, i forget the name, Possibly Bradshaw St?:confused:

I remember my mum telling me that her brother Tiny and Arthur were great mates, they went to Blackpool one weekend and came back with a donkey, they walked all the way back with it to my grandads pen, they were animal mad.

to developmentjunction - there is a video, still available possibly, which Gordon Moore once did. It shows hay making time around Spire Farm. I am sure you would love to see the video. Someone on here may have a spare?

Hi all, been doing my family tree & searched my Great Uncles name Arthur Mortimer & found this thread.. My Nan or Gran as you say it up there was Maud Mortimer & their Dad was Henry Mortimer but I believe he was called Harry. He married Mary Jane Taylor.. I’d love to find out more about the Mortimer’s as I believe they was a quite well known family in Accy. If anyone has any info or stories (like the donkey story which my Dad told me about) I’d love to hear from you :-)
