School Dinners
I made Liver and onions with mash and peas for dinner today
liver was done in the slow cooker it was great but reminded me of school dinners my fav was butterscotch tart or choc sponge with pink custard i hated and still do hate prunes and custard what do you remember of school dinners good and bad ? and do you have any recipes ? |
Re: School Dinners
I have never liked liver....in any shape or form.
I liked prunes and custard....not so fond of rhubarb and custard. I liked any kind of cake and custard.....jam role poly and custard was my absolute favourite. I can't think of many main courses....I liked spud pie and beetroot....and mince and dumplings. In truth, if it had not been for free school dinners I think my brothers and I would have starved. |
Re: School Dinners
Never had school dinners as I lived near enough to go home.
|
Re: School Dinners
I only remember the custard- nothing with it, just a steaming ladle full, poured into my bowl. I asked for more, and was told to stand in the corner for my insolence.

Re: School Dinners
I always had school dinners as I didn't live in Accrington but went to school there. Don't remember any meals from Peel Park but at the High School the thing I remember most was something everyone called 'Yaccum'.( Well that was how it was pronounced) It was served with some sort of pudding instead of custard and was thick and very sweet. I never did know what it was but it was certainly a favourite. Anyone recall it ?
|
Re: School Dinners
When everyone had been served you could line up for 'seconds'...and believe me I did.
There was one lovely dinner lady who used to give me a chunk of cake to take home.....all neatly wrapped in a paper towel. |
Re: School Dinners
I couldn't stand tapioca pudding. It looked like frog spawn.

I was 2 years above you. I only had school dinners for the last 2 years - until then I went to my gran's in Accy. |
Re: School Dinners
I loved school dinners. The meat crumble was really good served with gravy from a metal jug and I liked semolina with a blob of jam stirred round to make it pink! The custard always had a thick skin on it but I wasn't keen on the stodgy sponge pudding. Prunes and custard was nice too. We always had proper meals until they changed to a canteen system when I was about thirteen when, I thought, the meals deteriorated. I can remember my kids coming home complaining that the yoghurts were out of date or the fruit rotten in the middle. I think profit started to come before proper nutrition.

Re: School Dinners
Think you're right Westendlass. Now every thing seems to be something and chips. I do not every remember having chips at school.
|
Re: School Dinners
I've never had one!
Always had packed lunches. One day when I was about 5 I forgot my packed lunch and had to go and get a school dinner, I didn't know what to do and another little girl had to tell me when to get a plate and stuff and I was SO embarrassed-and I sat down to eat it and then my Father turned up with my packed lunch that he'd brought. All the dinnerladies were telling me I had to still eat the dinner but I threw a tantrum and wouldn't. My Sister went to a different (private) school and is still so traumatised over the fact she was forced to eat prunes that we're not even allowed to mention them in front of her. |

Re: School Dinners
Stayed for school dinners for a few years, cost five bob a week, a shilling a day. Some were good some were just O.K.. I remember buying a bottle of B top sauce to help some of the dinners. Love the bakewell tart and custard, I remember they made large flats of meat pie with a lovely crust on top but when you flipped the crust it was loaded with onions underneath yuk. Still, can't complain we didn't starve.

Re: School Dinners
The only bit of school dinners I can remember were the Brussels sprouts, boiled for ages until a disgusting mush.
I've hated them ever since. Oh, and semolina pudding just like lumpy wallpaper paste left in the bucket too long. The rest must have been OK, at that age you enjoyed eating most things. |
Re: School Dinners
OOOOOh that choc pud with pink sauce looks really rummy. That was one of my favourites at school.
|
Re: School Dinners
Loved them! I remember once in the 60's there was a shortage of spuds so they sent bread and butter instead????
|
Re: School Dinners
Yes, I remember that too. We got great thick slices of bread..but it definitely wasn't butter on it..... It was Summer County marge.
|
Re: School Dinners
From what I remember of school dinners they were awful, the dinner ladies use to leave the kitchen doors open and the smell is very enticing.
But don't be fooled the food was over cooked to the point of leaving little to no nutritional value....the puddings were ok though.....if you liked semolina ;) |
Re: School Dinners
Our school dinners were cooked off the premises and were delivered around 11.30 in large steel containers by cream Bedford vans with the Lancashire red rose logo on the side.
These lunches were also provided to the needy as 'Meals on Wheels'. |

Re: School Dinners
Yes, they were. I remember once going to the dental clinic on Cannon St and seeing the vans lined up ready to be filled with rice pudding and steaming gravy.

Re: School Dinners
Back on the school dinners kick again
Going to make mince beef pie with mash and peas for dinner Some ingrediance I did not think would be in this school recipe include celery and marmite Are you a marmite fan? Afters will be home made treacle tart with home made custard |
Re: School Dinners
No. I don't like either of those ingredients.
I make a mean minced beef and onion pie.......my recipe does not include either of those things...it does have mustard and tomato ketchup in it though...and fresh or dried parsley....and I use red onions. |
Re: School Dinners

If that was on the menu I starved...well sometimes just had a plate of carrot and the pud. Don't know what it was about the menu, but it was never a goodudding(like jam sponge and custard or roll poly) when fish pie was on the menu...it was usually sago or jelly and custard. Not something substantial that would stop your back and your belly from flopping together. |
Re: School Dinners
You aught to taste my wifes fish pie, Margaret. You'll want seconds I guarantee! !
|
Re: School Dinners
Never Jim, I cannot stomach fish other than in batter.....and I hate 'fishy' fish.....it has to be meaty fish.
Salmon makes me violently ill.....no give my portion to the cat. |
Re: School Dinners
Some memories of mine were scarey dinner ladies.who took more home than they give the kids...A dollop of mash served with an ice cream scoop..Never any chips...Frog spawn sago...The poor kids on free dinners had to wear a big badge......
|
Re: School Dinners
school fish pie, mushy peas that were as hard as the marbles you played with and mashed poatoes that always contained lumps that tasted underdone. the only plus side were the sweets. jam rolly poly. spotted dick and the school custard. school dinners must have been the first part of the national corriculum as they sounded as bad in accy as they were in the north east.
