Back in the day.
Does anyone remember..block mascara, you would spit on the hard block to moisten it,then rub the brushing it to load the brush, then apply.Looking back it wasn't very hygienic eugh. Also..Belair,hairspray.You bought it as a liquid in a bottle, then poured it into a squeeze spray. When applied it would withstand a force 10 gale.
Memories,memories.....:gorgeous: |
Re: Back in the day.
Yes.....I think I might still have some of that block mascara somewhere.
It might have been unhygienic, but did anyone come to any harm using it? My memories are of little sachets of Silvikrin shampoo(4d a sachet at the corner shop).....and Amami wave set and conditioner. Tight pin curls and bulldog clip things that were supposed to make natural looking waves. |

Perhaps the above becomes automatic once maternal instincts set in?
Just like when my son was at the age of learning to use a knife and fork, my missus and I were out for a meal, my steak arrived, she automatically took my plate from me and started cutting everything into mouth size bites, I sat bemused staring at her, knife and fork in hand, she had managed to carve about 95% of my meal whilst talking away without realising were she was or whose meal she had so obligingly dissected! |

No, never did me any harm. It's like all these squeaky clean surfaces,no germs, stay healthy.Yet so many kids today have allergies and catch colds so easily. You need one or two germs every now and then,to help build your immune system.Otherwise how would your immune system know what germs look like.!!hee

Re: Back in the day.
Come on ,Less when needs must.Us women used our noggins,we're the fore runners of baby wipes.Cheaper too.

Re: Back in the day.
I agree, things can be too clean, I've spent years building up a surface of dust around the place, fell over in the front room after a good night out disturbed the lot, been sneezing ever since.
As for women and hygiene there are ads on telly at the mo' turn your pee into gel and dance through the night. Surely anyone worthwhile would excuse themselves and change their underwear? I certainly don't want the image of my partner not skip, skip, skipping to the loo! |
Re: Back in the day.
Less.....after a certain age the tap washer can get a bit leaky.....you laugh(you pee) you cough(you pee)......and sneezing well, that should be avoided at all costs unless you have a spare pair in your handbag.
I know with men it is a little different...they have to wait for ages to pee.......and sometimes they have to get up three or four times in the night......all down to old plumbing. |

Re: Back in the day.
I agree......don't like these personal type adverts at all......and the Durex ones make me cringe too.
How did we get from spit and scrub mascara to dribbly knickers? |
Re: Back in the day.

however spit and dribble are made of the same sort of stuff. Grouping them together is perfectly natural on this site. :D |
Re: Back in the day.
Toothpaste was a block in a tin too. Gibbs I think. I certainly remember using Belair hairspray. Could have stood in a firce 10 gale and still not had a hair out of place.

Re: Back in the day.
We had carbolic soap cut from a lump at the co-op....that was red....they also sold Olive soap. It did not have the pungent aroma of carbolic

My Auntie Phyllis(when she was 'courting') used these and I once pinched one....it was not very nice. |
Re: Back in the day.
Then there was the penny brylcream dispenser at the baths or if you were posh there was the tin of brilliantine, smelt nice but was really just lard with perfume in it.
You had Pears soap Rowlf? You must have been rich? |

Re: Back in the day.
One of my brothers had a mild skin condition and my mum used to buy Wrights Coal tar soap just for him.....if I was mad at him I used to take the bar out to the coal hole and roll it in the coal dust.....it really did have coal in it then.
I got my hide tanned, but it was worth it. |
