Chip shops
 

Where we lived on Plantation St there were 3 chippies within short walking distance, 2 on Plantation St and one on Cedar St . They only sold fish, chips, peas ,pies and steak puddings. We were discussing how much fish and chips used to be. The cheapest I could remember was a shilling for a fish and sixpence for chips (about 1960)
We both used to go the the one opposite the old swimming baths. They were really good out of the newspaper.

Does anyone remember going to the chippy with your dish and getting a pudding and a mixture?
This was a portion of chips with a steak pudding, peas and gravy…I remember this being one and sixpence.
My mum used to treat herself to this on a Friday.
If I was sent for this I would poke a hole in the newspaper and pinch a couple of chips with gravy on them.
This was from the chippy opposite the Woodnook pub on Marsden street.

Oh yes and the chip shop opposite the baths would sell you a bag of bits for two old pennies….these were delicious doused with vinegar.
