Chip shops
Where we lived on Plantation St there were 3 chippies within short walking distance, 2 on Plantation St and one on Cedar St . They only sold fish, chips, peas ,pies and steak puddings. We were discussing how much fish and chips used to be. The cheapest I could remember was a shilling for a fish and sixpence for chips (about 1960)
We both used to go the the one opposite the old swimming baths. They were really good out of the newspaper. |

Re: Chip shops
Does anyone remember going to the chippy with your dish and getting a pudding and a mixture?
This was a portion of chips with a steak pudding, peas and gravy…I remember this being one and sixpence. My mum used to treat herself to this on a Friday. If I was sent for this I would poke a hole in the newspaper and pinch a couple of chips with gravy on them. This was from the chippy opposite the Woodnook pub on Marsden street. |
Re: Chip shops
Oh yes and the chip shop opposite the baths would sell you a bag of bits for two old pennies….these were delicious doused with vinegar.
