"Sock It To 'Em JB" - Rex Garvin & the Mighty Cravers. You've all heard it, whether you know it or not, as it was used in one of the KFC commercials. An instant floorfiller at Accy Disco in 1967.

Re: Take me back.(soul)
Question. for Wynonie. Can you give us the actual definition of what" Northern Soul " really is, there are so many variations, its conffusing. I dont think the term was around in the 60s.
|
Re: Take me back.(soul)
wasn't around in 60s alan kicked off in70s at wigan casino to the best of my knowledge, although a good few records that took off as northern soul were 60s records some hits most wern't at that time, one 60s chart hit that was mega for a short while at wigan was supergirl- graham bonney, classic record but criminally just a minor 60s hit, probably wynonie can fill you in with more detail than me.
|
Re: Take me back.(soul)
I would say that Northern Soul had its origins at the Twisted Wheel in Manchester around 68/69. Soul music in America was moving in a funky James Brown-style direction, but the dancers at the Wheel preferred the 60's Motown-style sound. To satisfy the demand for fresh sounds the DJs began to dig out obscure records in tihs style which had been released in the 60's, but ignored at the time. The cult rapidly grew, spreading to Blackpool Mecca, the Torch in Stoke and of course Wigan Casino where it achieved national prominence. Nowadays it's a catch-all term for any obscure or semi-obscure 60's or even 70's record in this style.
|
Re: Take me back.(soul)
didn't know it origins started at the (wheel)used to go there @the heaven and hell club very occasionally, but much of its a total blur, only thing i recall is HELL was downstairs.
|
Re: Take me back.(soul)
Incidentally, Cashman, "Supergirl" - Graham Bonney's a crackin' record. I commend your good taste!

Another top record and one that used to regularly fill the floor at Accy Disco back in '67.
|
Re: Take me back.(soul)
"Supergirl" was one of my favourites. Graham Bonney was very popular in Gemany in the late 60s early 70s. He had one hit there I remember called "Siebenmeilenstieffel"

Re: Take me back.(soul)
Good grief, haven't thought about the Twisted Wheel for years! - used to get down there when I shared a flat in Manchester - never will I forget the night I was chatted up by this gorgeous creature in a Beatles-type suit, who offered to run me home - had a sports car!!! - got back, nobody else around the flat, thought "This is my lucky day" - then SHE took her jacket off! I honestly hadn't realised - short haircut, looked masculine, etc. She was very nice about it, though!
Don't remember the Torch in Stoke - but didn't move there until much later and didn't start going out down there until about 1970 or so - used to go to the 007 club and various other joints. The attraction at the 007 was not so much the music as their compere who was a great comedian, and of course the lads used to go to see the strippers! |

I only went down the wheel half a doz times, the Oasis, Flamingo as well. In Manchester, there was a great mod shop I used to buy gear from, but cant think of its name, it was down a side street accross from Lewises dept store. Harry Fentons was pretty good too. Thanks, Wynonie & Cashman, for your definitions on N. S.

Re: Take me back.(soul)

Now,The velvet Satins, ( nothing compaired to you ). Tony Clarke,( They call me the wrong man ). These were three request's from a guy from Nantwhich. Pretty good choice, dont you think. Soul Deep was great. I even postponed my trip to the pub for it! Can't wait for the Sam Cooke story next week. The Velvet Satins, Kurt Harris - crackin' records from the Wigan Casino era. Remember Tony Clarke's "The Entertainer"? A pre-Northern soul record...in fact, yet another floorfiller from Accy Disco 1967!

Also, nice to see some of the often-forgotten rhythm & blues pioneers getting some exposure in Soul Deep...Louis Jordan, Ruth Brown, Big Joe Turner. Pity they didn't mention Wynonie Harris, but you can't have everything!

Cashman, I'll bet Jackie Brenston gets a mention when they get to talking about Ike & Tina, as Ike backed him on his classic "Rocket 88".
Etta James...one righteous, blueswailin' lady...and still going strong! |

One of my favourite soul records has to be 'Rainy Night In Georgia' by Brook Benton. It knocks the socks off the Randy Crawford version.

Re: Take me back.(soul)
Hope they Screen Soul Deep over here. The ABC usually shows all the music docs, such as Walk on by, Get up stand up, etc, etc. See what I miss by living in Tasmania, But you cant have your cake eh.
|
Re: Take me back.(soul)
what about soul deep this week, otis also a guy i'm ashamed to say i,d forgot- the late james carr, its mindblowing great series.
|
Re: Take me back.(soul)
Saw a couple of clips on the internet from Soul Deep, of Etta James and Alain Toussaint, vision and sound poor. A couple of other names, to remember, Don Covay, Darrell Banks, Betty Everett.
|
Re: Take me back.(soul)
Glad you caught last Saturday's episode, Cashman. It was, in my opinion, one of the best music programmes I've ever seen on TV. Otis, Aretha, Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave and the most underrated singer of all time - James Carr. Al, if this series ever gets to Tasmania, miss this episode at your peril!

Re: Take me back.(soul)
Can anybody tell me how I can find out if soulclub.org will ever come back on line, they had some fantastic soul & Motown tracks on there.

I really love the way Tony Joe White sings it. He wrote it and means it when he sings it! Its still fabulous sung by Randy Crawford and Brook Benton though. its a fantastic song. |
Re: Take me back.(soul)
ABC, radio has been playing Brook Benton's version (recorded 1970 ) two or three times a week here. I think it would have to be in the top three of my favourite songs, never get sick of it. I think Brook was underestimated in my view. Its a shame, he was only 56 when he died. ( real name Benjamin Peay : of The Sandmen )

Re: Take me back.(soul)
Curtis Mayfield.. smooth yer socks.. Freddies dead, running wild..stick em on the jukebox
|
Re: Take me back.(soul)
Well to answer my question from 2006, Shorty played piano on a few Presley tracks, incl DONT BE CRUEL.

we used to go down some small shop on Abbey St to get old Tamla in the early 70's..the Gezeer sold most 45's for 5p.(16 shillings and sixpence).but I reckon he saved some good stuff for himself.

Re: Take me back.(soul)
I think your right Mr C. I just had a look at Manchester Beat & clicked on shops & clothes, It mentions Toggery, but I thought it was down a side street accross from Lewises, but its a long time ago. I remember the Toggery 5 alright, up the Con, what two songs are you talking about by the Hollies & 4 Tops. Kurtis was a good shop as well. PS. Wynonnie put me on to Manchester Beat, so have a look Steeljack, Jaysay, Mancie, and all the people of that era. Barack Obama Dresses like a Mod, could see him down the Wheel,
|
Re: Take me back.(soul)
Me again, Just clicked on groups on Manchester beat & Toggery 5 it gives a full story of the group, and it answers my question Walk Away Renee' & Im Alive.
