Bad mouse.(cleaning)

My mouse is sticking, and it is hard to move around. It's only about a month old or so. I've changed my mouse mat, but it's still hard to move to the right place.

Are there any tricks. Should I move the ball, shake it, or buy another?

shakermaker 13-01-2006 14:09

Re: Bad mouse.

if you remove the ball there might be some dust stuck inside on the rollers; if there is just remove it and it shouldnt stick anymore.

Re: Bad mouse.

Thanks shakey.

Can you open a mouse?

If so l'll give it a try.

Perhaps it's eaten some fag ash.:(

shakermaker 13-01-2006 14:13

Re: Bad mouse.

the circle thing (excuse my lack of tekky jargon) around the ball should twist one way and should just fall out.
i've got an optical mouse now; little more expensive but havent had any problems with it at all in the 6 months ive had it

Thanks mate.:)

Thanks also to Chav for telephoning, and helping with my first mouse disection since 1979.

The mouse's belly is now fluff and ash free, and working well.

Cheers.:)

you beat me to it, but Ill post anyhow.

There will be three rollers inside, just gently scrap of the encrusted muck.

Thanks so much.

It's like a new mouse.

Yet again the power of Accy Web has been used for the good.:)

I wouldn't have thought to do that, I would have been afraid I'd have broken it.

Many thanks.:)

Better off with a optical mouse (no balls)

I bought a small optical mouse for my laptop and tried it on my main pc. I found it to be a dammed sight easier and quicker to use. I’m going to get another one and replace this poor old thing. :)

Granny C I had a good poke about with a slighty moist cotton bud, it worked for me, the mouse is as good as new.:)

I tried one of those optical mouses (mice?????) and didn't like it. Also tried a wireless keyboard at the same time and ended up getting really frustrated with them and plugged my old ones back in!

WillowTheWhisp 13-01-2006 20:02

Re: Bad mouse.(cleaning)

I've got a wireless keyboard and an optical mouse. The keyboard is so worn now you can't see the letters on it, which is OK for me because I know where they are but it confuses people who have to look at a keyboard in order to type.

The mouse is OK most of the time but it does sometimes develop a mind of its own and the cursor shoots off where you don't want it to go. All fine and dandy unless I'm doing something graphic and delicate.

When I had a mouse with a ball I tended to find the rollers got a bit yucky so I used to clean them with a cotton bud with a drop of isopropanol on it. We always used to use that for cleaning computer bits at work. I have no idea where you can get it from these days on its own but it comes with head cleaning kits and it works wonders. If water won't shift a stubborn bit of muck isopropanol usually works a treat.

Same here Gayle.
I clean my mouse and computer with a baby wipe.

Re: Bad mouse.(cleaning)

If you have any IPA keep it away from Chav. We used to get it at work but now we get the wipes. Mind you that gel they have on hostpital words would work as well.

Gary, call round sometime when you are passing and I will lend you a wireless optical mouse to try. You will buy one after trying it I am sure. You can sit in bed with your laptop and use the mouse on top of the duvet/sheet.

My lap top is no more, it was too old to take broad band.

Thanks for the offer though.:)

No laptop is 'too old' to take broadband. I can set it up an anything from an old 286(Most of probably don't even know what this is! 286 became 386 became 486 became Pentium became pentium2 became pentium 3 became pentium 4 etc) one if I wanted to

Neil 14-01-2006 17:13

Re: Bad mouse.(cleaning)

I have an 8086 that you can set up for me for internet use if you like.

Re: Bad mouse.(cleaning)

I'm up for the challange. OK to go through my linux box or would you like a direct PPP connection?

How much RAM in it? (K)

Considering we used to connect using modems that you pushed a telephone handset into it should be a piece of cake!

640k I think without checking. And I want to use it as an email server please. It has one of those hard drive that sound like a demented bugie in it, mfm or something I think they were (it is a long time ago and my long term memory is failing due to age and alcohol). Do you have any 8 bit ISA network cards?

entwisi 15-01-2006 12:09

Re: Bad mouse.(cleaning)

we have a couple of old 8086's at work which are used to spoof a host(mainframe) response on ATM testing. I'm sure we have some network cards knocking about.

What sort of throughput you looking for? Max attachment size etc? You do realise it will be cli only?

Re: Bad mouse.(cleaning)

what is the point of a wireless keyboard? I don't get it. A wireless optical mouse would be a must for me if I din't have my trackball, I couldn't be bothered with wires dragging everywhere, it drives me mad.

WillowTheWhisp 16-01-2006 06:58

Re: Bad mouse.(cleaning)

The point of my wireless keyboard is simple - anybody else using the PC can simply pass it over to me for me to key in a password to permit them to access a site if I wish to allow them to do so.;)

grannyclaret 16-01-2006 12:52

Carefully dusted with talc so They can tell what keys you used and then crack it at their leisure :)

Thats not very techie Ian. I would have at least expected a 2nd wireless receiver so all key stokes can be monitor by the next door nieghbours

entwisi 16-01-2006 15:40

sometimes teh simple solution is the best

Boy, boys.

We'll have to organise a dance off for you both, or whatever the techie equivalent is.:)
