Re: pc help needed

you can stop it shutting down by running a command in a MSDOS window.

shutdown -a

This is only a temporary solution. You have a virus still. When did you last update the virus database in Norton? I'm not a fan of Norton but up to date it should still remove the virus. If you haven't got an up to date subscription then uninstall Norton, download AVG from http://free.grisoft.com/, install it and let it do all its updates. then let it have a go.

You also need to make sure you have a firewall on that is correctly set up. If you haven't, get the basic version of Zone Alarm from Zone labs. Whatever you do they will try and sell you the paid for version. Don't bother, the free one does the job just fine. When its installed please make sure that you don't just click willy nilly allowing all and sundry access. Make sure you know what programs you give permission to access teh net, any you aren't sure of click deny.

Re: pc help needed

Anti Virus MUST be kept up to date, you may as well not bother at all if you don't update it

cherokee 08-08-2006 22:58

Re: pc help needed

wouldnt know where to begin with that one mani and dont you need special software for that

entwisi 09-08-2006 13:13

Re: pc help needed

You need a windows disk or teh recovery disks that originally came with your PC.

What spec is it? CPU/Memory etc?

Re: pc help needed

Did you sort this out cherokee? Because it sounds like a hardware problem if you stopped shutdown but it still shuts down.

I fixed the pc Entwisi :) symptoms were automatically reseting. As if I'd pressed the reset button. It was worse the more the pc had to work. A virus makes a pc work harder so maybe thats what cherokee's problem is/was.

Thanks very much for finding me the drivers. I don't know what I did wrong the first time but when I tried again and it said you must reboot for changes to take affect I didn't do, I just swaped the cards.
My friend on Blackpoolweb has kindly given me a slightly better card so I'm going to see if I can fit that in the future. BUT although the fan was sticking on the graphics card(noisey ****** it was, at least this is fan less) it wasn't that.
I swapped the power supply for the one off that pc thats waiting to go back and it worked. SO, where can I get a good power supply at a reasonable price 350 watt the last one was and how do I know what sockets I need. This one just had a 20 pin one, a 4 pin square one, and two sets of drive connectors, but they don't say it in english in the ads do they.

ebuyer, scan, dabs, planet micro, & microland are a few I would consider

well thanks to our very own mick who spent three hours doing his best to sort it out and putting relevant software on it , i must say it is running much better ,still gettin some probs like internet dont like me at mo and keeps throwing me off but a few harsh words daily seems to calm it down , once i reconnect a couple of times it seems to settle so will have to see how it goes mick seems to think my hard drive may be on its way out as sometimes on startup it comes up with.. dumping physical memory.. and i have to restart but then its ok grrrr

OK quick update and question .

my pc has run a lot better since Mick has introduced me to zonealarm etc apart from when my boys been on it and dont understand how to use it which has meant ive had to reformat since .but now thats done its not too bad ,
However i am still getting system shut down every so often . Now the message i get is "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close "then shuts down after 60 secs .. Q ..!! could this be a fault with Internet Explorer? and if so is there something else i could use and if so do i need to buy special software ?

Yes there is a better browser than Internet Explorer. Download and install Firefox. Click this link to go to the download site. To be totally honest I still get occasional problems with Firefox, much less than with Internet Explorer. Firefox is also (supposedly) much more secure and less likely to be attacked by hackers than Internet Explorer. Try it, it is very similar and after a while you may prefer it like I do. A very few web sites don't work properly with Firefox and I still use Internet Explorer occasionally.

Re: pc help needed

I have to agree with Neil. I much prefer Firefox to any other browser but some websites don't work equally with all browsers and some colours don't show as the website owners want them to (maybe they haven't used hex numbers) so sometimes if colours look bit dodgy I check them out in IE just to see if there's a difference.

Slight thread wander - a friend of mine on AOL reckons he hasn't got a browser.
:D

Opera for me thanks, its justr seems more polished

Re: pc help needed

One thing I like is the way it saves where you were when you closed it off so you can go back and take up where you left off, but I'm still using Firefox most.

That's strange. It looks the same to me in IE and Firefox on my PC. What am I missing? I know my eyes are bad. :D

yep just checked willow and its much sharper on firefox

Ive got them both up together and can see the difference

entwisi 03-10-2006 19:02

Re: pc help needed

You probably have antialias fonts turned on in IE, it tends to smooth things out, some prefer it, some don't, I'm in the latter camp

WillowTheWhisp 03-10-2006 19:23

Re: pc help needed

The only difference I get in IE and FF is the log in box where it says "user name", one is side by side and the other one has one word under the other.

Re: pc help needed

My firefox shut down on me yesterday, hasn't done it for a month but before that done it several times in a week, strange it is, I think it's duff java codes on sites.???
IE shuts down, I only use it when I have to, bank sites, credit cards, building society etc

AccyJay 04-10-2006 13:36

Re: pc help needed

I've just noticed that when i'm using FireFox, it won't put a full link in a post, only the heading.

i.e.

http://www.accringtonweb.com/forum/f...d-23360-3.html

This link should have been in "red", & should of have the entire link text.

WillowTheWhisp 04-10-2006 14:04

Re: pc help needed

You've lost me there. I've looked at that with both FF nd IE and both look identical. Wht am I missing?

AccyJay 04-10-2006 14:39

Re: pc help needed

The link itself.

When i post a link using IE, the whole text appears (http://www.help.com). When i post using FireFox, only the heading appears (help).

Does this make any sense?

:D

Gotcha. I just posted that in IE and it appears in full in IE but in FF it's the title only. Actually I usually do a CLICK THIS type of link anyway so would never have noticed.

Re: pc help needed

Now that's odd because I edited the post in FF and now it no longer appears in full in IE!
