Vodafone Broadband

I know its a new service but anyone signed up for it or heard any reports? LINK
Seems very good value at £25 a month (If you have a Voda mobile contract) which includes line rental, 8meg unlimited broadband and free landline phone calls.
I'm currently on with Pipex at £24 a month for 2 meg and have to pay Bt for the line rental - £9.99 a month and my calls go through www.1899.com , totalling about £38 a month.
Pipex have brought out better packages now but you can't upgrade yet, say they are having upgrade problems, have been for 4 month +
Just sent them an email to ask when it will be available and that I dont want a reply telling me to ring tele-sales, i've done that and get no-where with them, next call will be for my MAC code, might as well save myself £13 a month :D

Re: Vodafone Broadband

Only downsides I can find are 18 month contract and no web-space, none of which really bother me.
Found a forum talking about it and everything seems to be going Ok for the few that have signed up.
Wonder what BT will charge if you ever cancelled it and went back to BT ???

Re: Vodafone Broadband

I would be very hesitant to lock yourself in to a 18 month broadband contract..

I'm not bothered about that if its good service, not one for swapping and changing a lot, if the service is really bad and there not providing you with what you want you can get out anyway

Re: Vodafone Broadband

Technicallity but I would assume thats UP TO 8mb broadband. If you go to the BT website you can check the actual speed you can get up to because Vodafone are using BT networks.

Re: Vodafone Broadband

Already done the checks and I "should" be able to get up to 8mb where I am

Re: Vodafone Broadband

This is £25 on to of your vodaphone contract?

Doesn't sound cheap to me particularly when you compare it with Oranges free broadband if you have a £30 contract.

so my totals are £30 mobile and £10 BT = £40 for my mobile, landlane and broadband all in.

And then theres Sky if you have a sports package....

Yeah, on top of your mobile contract.
But thats £30 mobile, £10 BT plus any calls made which would be about £45+ for me, same as its gonna cost with this package but will have unlimited calls and I will get faster speeds so works out Ok for me

entwisi 21-01-2007 20:53

Re: Vodafone Broadband

so £30 mobile, £25 broadband? = £55/month?

Re: Vodafone Broadband

Got a reply from Pipex and it is now possible for existing customers to upgrade, doesn't say so on the web-site though, still says coming soon
Now i'm really undecided on what to do, go with Vodafone for a cheaper option or stay with Pipex who I have had no problems with, keep all my email addy's, webspace, get up to 8 meg, free phone calls but still have to pay BT line rental, might save a couple of quid in phone calls at the most

Re: Vodafone Broadband

Pipex were always ultra reliable for me

Orange have been fine up to now apart from a few issues when I switched over. However having to try and sort those was far more difficult with Orange than I woudl have liked. plus I found Orange 'restrict' things for no good reason, e.g. I have my own email domain and have used it over the years from numerous ISPs yet Orange wouldn't let me send over SMTP via them, I could only use Orange's SMTP server. This was apain for me as it meant chamging it every day when I was at work or at home. I found a way round it as my email service run SMTP on a non standard port so we can get round issues like this.

Check that things like no ports are blocked on teh Vodaphone deal, A lot of ISPs also block port 80 and aren't too happy to allow stuff like VNC or ssh

Re: Vodafone Broadband

Is it worth all the messing if you are happy with pipex.

Better the devil you know.;)

andrewb 22-01-2007 19:20

Re: Vodafone Broadband

Do pipex not do adsl2+? As in Upto24Meg broadband?

Pipex now own all the bulldog customers (me), and I get 24Meg. I thought pipex were using the bulldog network to unbundle people too.. so seems only logical that pipex should offer 24Meg where Bulldog have unbundled the exchange?

Re: Vodafone Broadband

Dont think so but i'll check later, sure they only advertise up to 8meg

entwisi 23-01-2007 07:14

Re: Vodafone Broadband

I don't think they are migrating customers as yet. If you are new then there may be a chance.

Well Vodafone it is, got a reply from Pipex (above quote) so I phoned them for the upgrade, things started off great when I used the number from saynoto0870
and got connected straight away :) only then to be told
"upgrades are not available" we are having problems, you could cancel and sign up again
ME - What about my connection in the mean time will it stay or not?
No, changing providers it would but not if you cancel your contract and take a new one out, we have to close the line
ME - What about my email address's etc?
You "might" be able to claim them back but I think we have had this in the past and they have been lost for good, you will deffo loose your main one
ME - Can I have my MAC code then, I have found a better deal
hang on, i'll speak to my supervisor
ME - getting mad listening to that crap music for 5 min
Just spoke to my supervisor and he says we and Bt are testing the system now, might be available in a few days
ME - hammond tested a car a few month ago and it hasn't turned a wheel since, what makes you think it will work, you've been doing it for 4 month as I know of
everything has teething troubles
ME - I want my MAC code
Hang on, i'll pass you to the relevant department
MORE BLOODY MUSIC
Hello, you really want to leave Pipex
ME - Yeah, you cant provide me with what I want so i'm going and saving myself £13 a month
It might be available in a few days
ME - It might not be, says on your web-site available soon or something like that, said same thing for 4 month now
Ok, we'll email it to you within 72 hours, if you don't receive it phone again and we'll give it you over the phone
ME - can we not pretend I haven't received it and give it me now!

Anyway, got the MAC code, signed up with Vodafone, should be active on the 14th of Feb
Having to change all my email addy's now, probably use my Gmail one then I won't have this hassle again.
Just a thought, what do i need to set my own email server up? I have a domain but they charge you 83p an email address, how do I get something where you can use [email protected]??

entwisi 02-02-2007 08:07

Re: Vodafone Broadband

83p for how long. If its PA then thats not exactly a bad deal is it?

Or you could run your own but it does mean leaving your PC on 24/7/365

my hosting provider (1and1) offer email for free if you have a domain with them. I run 3 email domains, mine, my best friends and teh old dears next door

Re: Vodafone Broadband

which hosting co do you use, 1&1 do a package less than that for email alone of its free if you have actual webspace hosting with them.

Re: Vodafone Broadband

123reg but just having a look at 1and 1 now

entwisi 02-02-2007 19:59

Re: Vodafone Broadband

they have had iisues recently haven't they ( although whilst I didn't see any I believe some 1&1 customers saw some recently as well! ) :)

Re: Vodafone Broadband

Well the transfer went through OK, broadband was up and running this morning as well as the phone service, reckon it might take a few days for the line and connection speed to stabilize and i'm getting download of 7357 and upload of 488(or was it 468!)
I just got to go through the phone memory now and delete all the 1899 and area codes for local areas.
Anyway, so far so good, Vodafone have been very informative as the change as been going through, sent emails and texts about everything ie connection date, modem sent, user pack sent, phone is now connected, broadband is now connected
All my emails work including the ones from my own domain, even got 1st name emails at Vodafone for me and the Mrs, there usually the 1st ones to go.
Don't get me wrong, I would still recommend Pipex to anyone, been faultless for me, just a pity they couldn't do the upgrade in the last 4 month I have been trying to get it.
