Broadband & networking

Definitely need to go on broadband! Can't have NTL, no cable up here!
Which is the best one (don't say AOL, did trial wasn't impressed)

Want to network two computers.  Is any patricular one the best for this?

Re: Broadband & networking

Hi Cazzer. We have had a venture both sides of this broadband thingy....we are sorted now......ntl is best...If you get the N.T.L we can advise with the networking.

Re: Broadband & networking

We use a router and a hub, connected to the set top box, system works great, we network 3 pc's and our server. Can't complain but there's wires allover the place...

Re: Broadband & networking

At one time i did have two computers networked to mine, allowing them to access the net through my computer (im on BT broadband btw), but after formatting my computer a few times because of virus's i couldnt be bothered networking them back together for around the 5th time . .

Thinking of a wireless network ??? :-/

Re: Broadband & networking

I would say the NTL package would be best, as for networking you've several options, buy a small 4port hub or switch, or even easier ensure youve got network cards in both machines and use a cat5 x-over cable and share the internet connection, can be done easily from win98 upwards.

Caz 06-08-2003 17:33

Re: Broadband & networking

NTL would probably be my first choice, but I don't live in a cable area. Definitely wouldn't go with BT.

I'm on Virgin dial up now and their service has been great, might give them a try. You only have to give a months notice with them if you're not happy anyway.

Mick 06-08-2003 17:35

Re: Broadband & networking

once on broadband you Wont go back :D

Caz 06-08-2003 17:37

Re: Broadband & networking

Did when I tried AOHELL!!

Had more probs with that than on dial up.

Re: Broadband & networking

most people i know have had problems with them

Mick 06-08-2003 17:40

Re: Broadband & networking

once on your system very hard to get off

Caz 06-08-2003 17:46

Re: Broadband & networking

Virgin dial up has been brilliant, fast server - no probs. Just disconnects you if you've been on a while, and they do that 10min idle time thing.
But it reconnects automatically so it's not a problem. only £13.49 too.

Need the phone line and to network two computers though.

Mick 06-08-2003 17:55

Re: Broadband & networking

its only £17:99 for broadband at 150k

Caz 06-08-2003 21:35

Re: Broadband & networking

Yeah, just a pity I can't get NTL!

Mick 06-08-2003 21:49

Re: Broadband & networking

Have you asked if they are going to cable the street at some point
or is it like bt there has to be so many before they will  :D
if thats the case then you are in a good position to get support for it :D

Caz 06-08-2003 21:57

Re: Broadband & networking

No, they stopped doing the cable in Accy several years ago and no likelyhood of it restarting.

Mick 06-08-2003 22:02

Re: Broadband & networking

i will give them a ring in the morning and see what can be done :D

I'll have two...lol ;D ;D

Re: Broadband & networking

Right you lot i rang NTL they said and i quote "Cable is very expensive to lay but if we get 300 people wanting digital tv or Broadband then they would look at cableing more of the area "
what they want is a letter saying that 300 people with addresses want ether cable tv or broadband in the area of Accrington then they will do something about it .
So its up to you :D

Caz 11-08-2003 12:27

Re: Broadband & networking

Would be OK in the long term, if enough people were interested, Would have thought that if many were it would have been done by now.
Would like to know why when I asked about it, there was no future possibility, unless their financial circs have changed somewhat. Heard they were in dire staits financially at one stage.
Even if something came of this it would be a long term thing.
Can't wait that long! ;D

Re: Broadband & networking

A new scheme to deliver BROADBAND using electricity lines is now being tested in Winchester.
Following successful Scottish trials, Scottish and Southern Energy is testing its Powerline Communications BROADBAND service in England.
The technology uses the wires in the electricity network in much the same way as ADSL uses the telephone network.
Powerline, however offers the same speed when uploading as downloading from the internet.
ADSLs upload speed is typically restricted to half its download rate.
Similar trials in 2001 had to be stopped due to technical difficulties.
SSE said it has worked with Oftel to overcome interference with radio frequencies and radar and that there had been no reports of problems with voltage.
SEE plans to charge £30 per month for the service.
All users will need to do is plug into a fitted black box.
so it could meen everyone can have BROADBAND .

There are a lot of people in Accrington that want Broadband but the cable people wont do anything about it unless 300 ask.
i was only pointing out there might be a new way to get broadband in the future.
not everyone is as lucky as you mik
i to have broadband and would not go back to dialup
but some areas have no cable or cant afford sky .

HarryX 08-09-2003 12:19

Re: Broadband & networking

A little confused here. I am in Accy and have had boradband for over 3 years now..  Not cable or Sky though :)

Mick 08-09-2003 13:40

Re: Broadband & networking

one side of our street has cable the other side hasent so they cant have cable broadband .
i know there are other types i was talking about cable and the new system that scottish tests
:D

Roy 08-09-2003 17:22

Re: Broadband & networking

Surprised no-one has done it yet in accy but - a popular way of getting cheap broadband to people is one company buys a fast connection in first house on block, cable is run to every house on block(through attic for instance) and they all share a broadband connection. Or - if the above isn;t possible and you have good relations with neighbours set up a wireless network and share the cost. This is how many people are getting cheaper broadband in places where it is far more expensive than uk. Think about it.... (no good for downloading full length videos but browsing the web its fine!)

Mick 08-09-2003 18:45

Re: Broadband & networking

i dont think the people around here would go for it
good idea though

Re: Broadband & networking

8 quid for card, extra monitor, extra KB and extra mouse ?  Rubbish

not a lot of use if you want three or more computers.

not a lot of use if you only want two but in different rooms.

no security

lots of sharing violations

cuts resources in half

etc etc

Re: Broadband & networking

just signed up with bulldog £25pm for 1mb in the evenings and weekends and 512 during the day. I've also bought a belkin wireless modem so no nasty wires :-)

MikeWest 24-12-2003 13:24

Re: Broadband & networking

I'm on t' BT Broadband and I don't have any problems. No restrictions on downloads either. So i'm milking music n stuff off Kazaa all night long. Tis a bit pricey at £29.99 but once you've tried broadband there's no going back.

Beaker 06-01-2004 22:53

we use Pipex extreme - we run 3 networked pc's and an xbox on xbox live (quite often at the same time) and no problems - weve been on ntl before we moved and find this a satisfactory alternative once we stopped crying over the loss of NTL cabling :)

david anthony 09-02-2004 09:04

cazzer have a look at pipex. they have good reviews and they r cheap also have a look at freedom to surf also cheap for broadband!
hope this helps

Neal 19-02-2004 23:03

Haven't viewed other posts but i'm on Tiscali, around £10 per month phone line rental (BT) and £25.99 per month for 512kbs speed broadband with Tiscali. Easy to set up, network and it connects first time and never had any problems.

Like how you have to click connect too, so your computer is not always on. Once logged on, it never logs off until you make it.

Neal 19-02-2004 23:12

My mum is on NTL but thinking of changing. Slow connections if it connects, TV keepgs going funny. NTL keep saying they are dealing with it but nothing changes!

As for removing their software, I installed my mums machine manually and connected it through their network card (Tried the usual NTL way too through USB port so know that nothing was wrong). Don't need their rubbish on the system then. Just log onto the 'start.ntl' page and register the computer that way.

Happy with Tiscali!

WINGY 21-02-2004 06:59

I've just changed from aol dial up to bt broadband, defo would never go aol again far too many pop ups and ads.i have also opted for wireless networking, we use 2 laptops and its great, infact i'm sat in bed right now!
will be trying next door later and if the signal is good enough i think my neighbour will be on broadband too...

Sara 29-02-2004 11:32

Can anyone recommend Tiscali. Want to get broadband but at the same time not have to pay a lot for it, after looking into it that seems the cheapest. Thanks.

jrenshaw 01-03-2004 07:43

tiscali do have a cheap version but it is slower than from other providers. They're cheap package is only 3 times faster than dial up :-(

Neal 02-03-2004 18:36

But the 'expensive' one (512k) seems faster than NTL 600k! That's because NTL are poor.

KIPAX 03-03-2004 09:56

Just leaving btopenworld broadband service after 3 and a half years of using there half meg broadband. for the same price I can get 1mb broadband from bulldog http://www.bulldogdsl.com

jrenshaw 03-03-2004 10:09

as I have said before in this thread I am with bulldog and they have been good for me so far. They even went through a period without charging me :D though they have sorted that now :( . Have you already signed up anyone? Cos if you haven't you can put me down as the referrer if you wish :D

KIPAX 04-03-2004 18:49

Hiya.. I don't pay for my internet access. someone I do some work for does and they are the ones changing it over. There also going to be resellers so they want all staff on it. Thats the main reason for the change. I have been happy with btopenworld and not had problems in over 3 years (even when testing before general release). However I now get the benefit of a 1mb connection (from 500). Just a shame about the wait. this dialup business is doing my top in :(
