Re: WEB SITES

Surprised you put in Kazaa.com Mick, THAT peer to peer site comes complete with a package that is FULL of spyware which is the reason Kazaa lite is so popular. It has nothing to do with Kazaa except that it fights the concept of spyware packaging!

Personally, I prefer Win mx which in my opinion is superb as a peer to peer site. The main danger of all peer to peer sites is the possibility of d/loading virus problems,

Before d/loading, check out the bytes, A single should be between 2 - 12,000,000 bytes and an album 40 - 70.000.000 bytes. Programs are considerably lower, but watch out for "100 / 100 available" or the user having the word "Girl" in the title!

These files tend to have very small bytes but are easy to "click on" Also, the file title includes words that cover a whole array of musical tastes "Bowie, Beatles, Small faces, Sex, Beastiality..." You get the picture?? Put in a search..and you will come across these!

Using common sense, you can d/load any amount of files, music and video's,....but be aware!!

Re: WEB SITES

if u want to download top goodies then bit torrent is the client to be using . search for it on google its hard to miss. many sites are offering it now as the primary download source. Esp where open source technology is concerned you will find links for torrent downloads for most ISO linux distributions these days.

Re: WEB SITES

kazaalite full of bugs and spyware , winmx takes forever to get to the front of queues i use torrentspy.com no queing and a lot faster all you need is java and a bit client it may not have loads of singles but theres loads of software a lot more than the other two mentioned and movies

honestly a bit rubbish think it uses the same files and peers as fileshare and edonkey, gronkyer or whatever its called there didnt seem much choice on it and it took to long to connect to the peers as much as kazaalite is bad for spyware if you run the microsoft spyware it sorts it and its the best for music singles

Re: WEB SITES

suprnova was shut down a while ago as were most of the major bittorrent sites. The developers are working on a hybrid which would use a gnutella(Kazza, bearshare, winmx) network to share the .torrents before switching to Bittorrent for the download.

There are some mirror sites left over from suprnova, i occasionally use Bi-torrent.

As has been said, make sure you know what you can expect when using any P2P. That is one of teh other beauties of using Linux, no spyware/viruses so I can download to my hearts content. at worst its wasted download time as non of teh nasties work under linux.

Re: WEB SITES

I have tried a few P2P - Napster (before it was shut down), kazaa, grokster, i-mesh, but they are all full of spyware. Don't know about Napster now that you have to pay for it.

I use winmx now as it seems to be spyware free, but if there are any better sites around I will have a look.

I saw something on Working Lunch last week about bit torrents - is this much faster than the usual P2P?

entwisi 15-02-2005 10:56

Re: WEB SITES

It can be, It is different. It tends to be faster for newly released stuff, but older archive stuff is harder to find. I can explain how it works if you can't be bothered to google.

Has anyone ever tried Direct Connect or DC? It is a P2P client. If yes what are your opinions on it.

jason 31-03-2005 16:57

Re: WEB SITES

I read earlier about imesh being full of spyware...........there was in one version but they have now brought out imesh5,which is totally clean.
Most of the time with p2p is trial and error, some programs work better for some people but others may not like that particular program.

I had a clean version of imesh until i changed computers at xmas and it was brilliant.since then i have tried imesh5,winmx, and ares.
I now use Ares and it is ok,but the only drawback i find with it is that if a download stops you cannot resume it,you have to wait until someone comes on and has that file.
I look at different p2p programs all the time and install them, but i have 2 programs on here to combat spyware and malware.
Just be careful on what program you download and ALWAYS run a spyware check when installed but b4 u use the program.

Re: WEB SITES

Hello everyone,

I use to use DC and it was very good, takes a little time to get use to. I tried it recently but was not really happy with the ques... I think you need to keep it and stay in an hub to get anywhere with it. I have been using Torrentspy.com which is quite good but its a good idea to install Peergaurdian 2 which helps to block unwanted organizations

I have just installed Ares which seems very good - thanks for that

The thing with Limewire I've found is the amount of spam I've getting since I tried it. The usual Grow it bigger tablet kind of thing. But annoying anyway.

Re: WEB SITES

the only p2p Programs that are not malicious is DC++ and SLSK(soulseek)

if you use these p2p programs to download you most likely going to get viruses. These kind of p2p are the worst things to use to download stuff...

Bit torrent is one of the best ways to download stuff. I use a torrent site to download unofficial live recordings of concerts. Sites like piratebay are not good either... there are private torrent sites that have good communities and are safer for your pc than using p2p networks.

No matter if you have the PRO version of limewire... you are still using the kind of network that kazaa uses

Restless 10-05-2009 15:00

Re: WEB SITES

UTORRENT all the way as far as a bit torrent client goes

azuerus used to be good but they sold out and now its add supported

Stay away from shareaza, its a joke

I used to run a DC hub a few years back.

All file sharing can be malicious. The files can contain viruses, trojan's etc.

Even the clients can be unsafe. I used to write scripts for DC that allowed me to see people PM's and log who was doing what.

Restless 10-05-2009 16:50

Re: WEB SITES

true but over the years of using torrents i have never had many viruses. Limewire, kazaa and programs like those are just too dodgy for my liking

thats a bit dodgy looking at PM's hehe.. DC++ i only used because the audiobook hubs there are awesome.
