hacked
Monday i was hacked.....im still seething
Im also really petrified they can still get into my email for my new details if its spyware they used. how invaded to i feel :( Seems to be sorted out now although im still sending messages to people who are expecting payment from me for mobile phones my little hacker friend decided totry and treat him/herself to.(in my mind it was a guy). Im so lucky that my password for paypal was different to my ebay password. Whoever it was got into BOTH my email and ebay account although those passwords were different. They also changed the info such as postcodes and town so i couldnt even get into my account via phone because they ask for personal details like that to verify identity..... this post is going to be extended into the over 18's so i can write what i really think about my personal lil' hacker... |
Re: hacked
Have u a firewall on your pc??? checked your system with spyware removers etc???
|
Re: hacked

Re: hacked
this is not spyware, its a trojan. (spyware is only interested in marketing info, trojans are password/etc stealers)
I would not use anything like ebay, email, paypal etc till you have done a full scan with absolute up to date virus software. I would even be tempted to try one of the online ones in addition to whatever you have installed to be doubly sure. I would also be tempted to reset all program permissions on your firewall to ask and then only allow those you know for sure to be safe. i.e. don't just allow every program to access teh net, only stuff like email and your browser. be very careful about programs with obscure names, google each and every one that you are unsure of so you know exactly what it is. |
Re: hacked
Keyloggers basically record all keypresses on your computer to a text file and then send it home. its quite easy to work out passwords from teh resulting file

once installed you dont need to touch teh persons pc again it will email you logs of every key they press inclusing usernames and passwords , msn converstaions and even can be set to take a screenshot every 5 mins or 2 mins etc so you can look at what they were looking at pretty sneaky but cool , i have them on my computers so i can look back afterwards at what my kids have been saying and looking at on the net most key loggers can be picked up by programs lie adaware , avg etc but i noticed when instaling my keylogger there was an option to make it so that they couldnt and it worked because my avg dosnt pick it up even though it is actualy running depends on how good a key logger they have installed if any , if a key logger has been installed i would be looking at visitors who you give access to your computer to unsupervised as they take a while to set up propperly |

OK! Seriously! Just like for viruses the anti-keylogger software is only as good as the latest update. And it can’t be updated until a new keylogger comes along, is identified as such, located on a computer and the details sent off to the anti-keylogger software people. But there are ways that you can protect yourself. If you don’t use the keyboard then the keylogger will have nothing to report. So for sensitive things like logging in details either copy and paste from a secure source or use RoboForm. Then there is this. http://goldentalk.com/showthread.html?p=111527#post111527 post 35. |
Re: hacked
Im letting my ex deal with all the anti-spyware or whatever because i will probably do something i shouldn't and end up worse off :(
Thankyou for the PM cashman. btw whats e-gold? |
Re: hacked
E-Gold is an on-line payment processor like PayPal or Moneybookers or Asian Pay.

Re: hacked
What a ****** misskitty! Hope you manage to get it sorted quickly.
By coincidence I was just looking at the Windows updates websites and noticed cyberdefender, an internet security suite. I presume I don't need another internet suite with having Nortons? These keyloggers sound worrying  How serious are they to a normal home user? To avoid being caught out by these keylogger things is it better to have websites 'remember' your passwords so you don't have to type it out? Rootkit? Whats those all about then? Should the home user have one? I know security is paramount on the pc but when you hear of someone getting hacked, unfortunately this time misskitty, it sort of sends you into a panic. |
Re: hacked
I know its really giving me a shock-unfortunatly it also means im not letting anyone use my computer any more (laura uses it often),not because i think they are doing anything deliberately but sometimes my friends go on sites i would steer clear of,mean i know but its better to be safe than sorry...i have learnt the hard way :(

Re: hacked
I am really protective of my pc ...... I only allow people in this house to use it so I can slap them silly if they knacker it up, and I'm permenantly looking over the shoulder of the sites they're on.

There are security issues with having sites remember your passwords. its stored somewhere on your PC (usually in a known location so trojans etc don't even have to wait for you to type it, they can just get them all from your hard disk without you knowing its been done Rootkit is something you REALLY don't want. its basically a virus that installs itself into required system files such that you can't even tell they are installed. VERY serious stuff. |

Re: hacked
hackers do not go to this much troubel for teh average home user you have to be realy realy unlucky to be a victim of been hacked especialy to the level where they get information about your passwords for email accounts and ebay
by the tiem you have installed all the applications people have recomemnded all you will end up with is a slow pc windows xp comes with a firewall which is ample enough for any home user and avg will scan well enough for viruses etc adaware which everyone raves on about is garbage and teh last time i used it and ran spybot seach and destroy( a much better application ) it showed adaware to conatin spyware and half teh stuff it finds it dosnt remove you can either sit there crapping your self behind 20 applications hoping you dont get hacked or take reasonable steps and relax hackers are like car theirves , if they want into your pc tehy will get in just like a car theif will get into a car no matter how good the alarm ps: the only computer that cant be hacked is one thats not plugged into teh net ;) take accyweb for example , roy knows what hes doing but the site still got taken down by hackers , there is always a way no matter what steps you take |

Re: hacked
Yeah, I just couldn't understand entwisi's explanation. I didn't know if they were a legitimate rootkit scanner or they were masquerading as a scanner when they are infact the virus and attach to your pc when you scan with the programme.
Am not at all techie minded, I often feel a bit blinded by it all. You think you cover one area and they you hear of other insecurities, today the new one is rootkit, I'd never heard of it before. As I said, when someone you know gets hacked it causes panic ...... unnessarily maybe. |
Re: hacked
adaware which everyone raves on about is garbage and teh last time i used it and ran spybot seach and destroy( a much better application ) it showed adaware to conatin spyware and half teh stuff it finds it dosnt remove---- agree with chav spybot is much better, i have adaware, spybot, and also ccleaner, which was recomended to me by a site owner, and i have found its even better than spybot, also removes more and within 1 min, i also found if i run ccleaner first then spybot i will have no threats on spybot, but if i do it the other way round- spybot first, then ccleaner will pick stuff up,so that to me is the proof.

Re: hacked
Also when you have ended your surfing/internet ....delete everything from your browser..I have found that by going to start-run and type "%temp%" without the quotes.. it takes you to the temp folder and you can delete files that can contain spy stuff.
I have posted this before... if I run skybot it may show some threats .. but if I clear my browser cache and do the %temp% folder before I run spybot then it tells me all is clear.. try it. |
Re: hacked
I tend to clear my cache & temp folder but not all the time, ccleaner is good i recommend it, as spybot:D

Re: hacked
Yesterday I conducted a series of experiments with regard to which anti-spyware programme is the best.
My surfing activity is the same each and every day so whatever is out there sneaking onto my computer does so each day. I accept that some of the autosurfers that I subscribe to will have changes to the web sites being displayed so where one web site left me with some spyware yesterday if it is not displayed today it won’t. And the other way around. I already have installed AdAware SE Personal and Spyware Doctor. Zone Alarm also chips in with searching for spyware. Although I don’t use Spybot anymore, for the sake of this experiment I installed it again. Everything got the latest updates. I ran Spybot and it found some nasties. I ran Spyware Doctor and it found some nasties. I then ran AdAware and it too found some nasties. I did the same in a different order and they all found nasties and did the same again in yet another different order and lo and behold they all found nasties. When I ran AdAware first and cleared all the garbage it found, the other two didn’t find anything at all. However having done this experiment before I found that once in a while Spyware Doctor would find something that AdAware had missed and vice versa. The same could be said for Spybot but it was very, very rare that it happened. Spybot found the fewest nasties and Adaware found the most. Having done this experiment months ago I got the same result and Spybot was removed because it wasn’t doing anything that the other two couldn’t handle. In the main AdAware finds more nasties and does it quicker than any other programme that I have used and once in a while ZoneAlarm will find something the others don’t. And also vice versa. I accept that my experiment is not absolutely conclusive but for me the bottom line is that the anti-spyware software is only as good as the latest update. There are days when AdAware has knowledge of spyware X when Spyware Doctor does not and vice versa. Which is why I use them both. I am reasonably confident that between them they will find what is going around and get rid of them for me apart from the ‘new one’ that no one knows about yet. The same can be said for anti-virus programmes. Most are produced by commercial businesses and they do not give away information about a new virus right away to the central pool. I am led to believe that they do share information about ‘new’ viruses but the sharing is delayed. Today AVG might be the best. Tomorrow it might be McAfee and the day after it might be Norton and the day after that some other programme. Which you choose is a personal choice. They are all as good as each other but that depends on the latest update and updates change. I use AVG Pro and ZoneAlarm Pro and they have served me well for a number of years, as have AdAware and Spyware Doctor. However I do give them all a helping hand by not downloading any spam emails, especially those with an attachment. With the aid of MailWasher they are interrogated and deleted from my ISP mailbox so none get a chance to get into my email client. If they can’t get to my computer then they cannot infect it. |
Re: hacked
Trouble with mailwasher is that the free version is only for one account - no good for people with multiple accounts set up:(
|
Re: hacked
True but the Pro version only costs $37 (about 20 quid) as a one off fee and all updates are free for life.
I don’t know about other ISP’s but with BT and previously with Freeserve (Wanadoo [Orange]) you could access your ISP mailbox via their web site and read all your emails waiting to be downloaded to your computer. And of course you could delete the unwanted ones. |
Re: hacked
you can of course just telnet in to your POP 3 accounts and do it all command line stylee. Of course its free as well
Just so you all know there is another way! |

Re: hacked
questions-what are the chances of this hacker being caught?
Apparently ebay are responsible for the legal side of things,do they actually follow it up?(i phoned the police who told me this because i was worried about my credit card). Is there any way i can help them?-i still have all the emails etc. |

<techie mode on> If you open a telnet session to the email server on port 110 to can actually talk to the email server(in its own language), ask what emails are waiting for you, delete them whilst on the server, etc in fact just what stuff like mailwasher does just without teh pretty gui interface here is an article on how to do it http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_san...pop3telnet.htm </techie mode> |
