Blue screen error - help.

When i play on virtual games i keep crashing out completely & when i do an error report it says ive had an unknown blue screen error, with possible device driver. Which i can only suspect its my graphics card with is a savage pro gfx [of that nature]

Is it that if so can it be easily upgraded [bare in mind it is a laptop] or is it something else thats causing me to crash out half way thro & laptop 12mnths less old approx:confused:

I really have no clue & not downloading drivers for sake of it when i may not be that, as the report itself doesn't know whats causing it:confused: & after trying the manufacturer site, im still getting this prob with no cure atm.

Re: Blue screen error - help.

Mel,
I'm not familiar with the games you are trying as I don't play many games on my PC. I'll try and do some investigation this lunchtime

When you say Blue screen, i sit a 'proper' "Blue Screen Of Death" or one that you can recover from?

With teh games themselves I am assuming they don't run in a browser, if this is incorrect let me know. If they do then have you tried another browser?

Have you ever managed to run them (i.e. before your windows update)

The specs that Tinks posted are reasonably high from a Gfx chip perspective.

On teh BSOD, can you write down and post what teh exact error is please.

Also , try doing

Start--- run eventvwr

then click on "Application"

Look through teh entires to see if anything jumps out (These are log entries for anything that went pear shaped within an application). You can have a look at teh System ones as well just in case

Ian

I'll come back to you after lunch when I've had chance to do some more digging

Re: Blue screen error - help.

Mel,

Does your laptop have a restore CD? You know the one that makes your laptop like when it was new with nothing but windows and the software it came with. You lose everything but a good re install is always good for a Windows machine.

Yes it does sound drastic but at least you would know if you have a fault with your hardware or not.

Don't forget to back up everything first as your laptop will be a virgin machine again after the restore.

Tinkerbelle 22-03-2007 11:11

Re: Blue screen error - help.

It is a bit drastic just for the sake of playing a couple of games, especially when it sounds like it's going to be the graphic card.

The only thing that baffles me is that it's allowing mel to actually load it. When I first tried to load it the computer said NO because my graphics card hadn't had the drivers installed. Mels will load although it's very laggy for the short time she's in the game and then gets booted. If it was a problem with the graphics card I wouldn't have thought it would have loaded it to start with?

Mel, Second Life states on their system reqs page that S3 and Savage cards are NOT supported.

Black Hawk down I'm not sure of, I'm guessing its trying to use some part of DirectX 9 that your Gfx card doesn't support.

entwisi 22-03-2007 11:40

Re: Blue screen error - help.

fair enough :)

it probably lets you load it but at some point the code tries to do something that Mels Gfx card doesn't support and at that point it bombs out. Microsoft with teh introduction of DX9 allowed extra 'features' that some Gfx chips support to be accessed through their API. if the hardware can't do it you will probably get internal register errors and that basically kills it. I would point out that in Linux you wouldn't have to reboot , just CTRL ALT Backpsace would restart the X windows system and you'd be back to where you were. :D

Re: Blue screen error - help.

The savage range is better than the Intel integrated chips but lower than say Nvidia.

You can play some older games but not the later ones. It also depends on what the developers chose to use when doing the graphics side of it. 2nd Life isn't that 'fancy' but they obviously chose to use a feature that is only supported by the latest Gfx chipsets.

Unfortunately thats teh thing with PCs, you end up wanting more than you can use.

accymel 22-03-2007 12:18

Re: Blue screen error - help.

Answered my question in long winded techy way of ..nope lol!

Just looked around & theres nowt for savage pro basic cards as i say now its savage 4 geoforce or not even savage 3d, so can simply say there is no games to play other than board ones as long as they are 2d, choice very limited especially when its not a pre historic machine at all:(

***Mr D*** 22-03-2007 12:19

Re: Blue screen error - help.

If you was thinking of upgrading your graphics card remember DX10 is out at the moment and new games will require a DX10 card soon.

This should also make DX9 cards a bit cheaper so could be worth waiting a bit.

I love online gaming its the only way to play.

IMO Laptops arnt really for gaming unless you spend £2000+

Whens big brother on to accentuate my sad existance ???????????

entwisi 22-03-2007 12:44

Re: Blue screen error - help.

Mel, 3D games have been out for many years, I can guarantee yours will run some games liek Unreal and Forsaken(These being two old but superb ones), driving games like Motorhead ran back in the days of Voodoo IIs so would fly on yours. These are just a couple of examples.

What I have tried to say is that Gfx chips are having more and more features built into then (bump shading/texture rendering etc) and Direct X 9 (and 10) offer programmers an API to use these directly. If they do then any card that doesn't support these features no matter how 'powerful' will have the same problem you have. Its not necessarily a lack of ooomph, more a lack of one or two tiny features being built in.

So if you avoid games that 'need' DX9 then you should be fine DX8 will support your Gfx chip just fine as will any older DX versions.

PS, XP brought DX9 in whether you wanted it or not. Previously teh game would have just reported that your version of DX was not supported, now they let your machine fall over in a big heap. and they call it progress..........

This is from the instruction manual. I take it this is the CD you said earlier that you don't have.

Reinstalling Windows XP

You can reinstall the Windows XP operating system with the "Windows XP Recovery CD" and the
"Drivers & Utilities" CD.
The instructions are provided on the case of the Recovery CD.
!
During the reinstall process your personal files and any installed programs will be deleted.
We advise that you backup your files to an external hard drive, or CD / DVD disk before
you start.
► Switch the notebook on.
► Press the F12 key when the message F2: Setup F12: Boot Menu appears on the
screen.
► Insert the "Windows XP Recovery CD" into the CD/DVD drive.
► Select the CD-ROM and press the Enter key.
► Follow the instructions on the screen.
After the installation you must install all the drivers again. Some installed hardware components will
not be correctly supported until this has been done.
► Insert the "Drivers & Utilities" CD into the CD/DVD drive.
The CD starts automatically.
► Click on the Desk Update button.
► Select Automatic driver installation (Express) and click Start installation.
► Follow the instructions on the screen.
► Restart your notebook when the driver installation is completed.

Re: Blue screen error - help.

There is no point in re-installing XP as theres nowt wrong with it. this is purely down to a case of the game Mel wants to play not being compatible with the hardware in her laptop.

IIRC this laptop has a hidden partition with the XP stuff on it.
