Windows Security Alerts.

I have been running a PC (Intel Dual core) with Vista Home Premium, it has run relatively happily except for a few anomalies associated with software not being compatible. Today I noticed a security alert for both Defender and the Anti Virus.

I click on start Defender and it looks for updates and then says there are non available and still says it isn't working. It has always accepted the free AVG anti virus and even states it is one of their partners on the anti virus page. AVG is up to date and sat in the system tray happily working.

I have scanned the PC with AVG, Adaware, Sypbot and Avast, non of them have come up with anything. Would anyone have any ideas as to why this is suddenly happening?

Entwisti will know, and he can be relied on to help when he sees your post.
Meanwhile- it may be due to having two antivirus systems running - that gave me problems at one time

AVG free is wonderful.
I have 'paid for' Spybot software - and have free Spamhilator.
Still get a mountain of SPAM but it is now more controllable

There are plenty of free security solutions the issue is windows itself is so insecure you all need this stuff hogging resources. If your OS was half decent it wouldn't need all this crap keeping up to date.

Vista tried to become more secure but all it did was become so intrusive everyone turns it off.

utter garbage is Vista, I'm surprised anyone still uses it.( NO techies I know will touch it)
