What are all these drives for?
I have just got a new pc and found that it has more drives than I ever had before and I have no idea what they are for.
I have just spent 12 hours getting it loaded and running and so am no longer in the mood for websearching to find out, so will someone please tell me what useful purpose these have (in easily understandable lingo please) Compact Flash Drive E xD/S Drive F Memory Stick Drive G SD Card Drive H |
Re: What are all these drives for?
Hi Margaret.
They are probably for memory cards used in digital camera's are they little slots in the front of the computer, underneath the DVD drive bay, if so thats what they are for. Retlaw Quote:

peace of mind is a wonderful thing |
Re: What are all these drives for?
yep, memory card reader does this. In Linux they don't appear till you plug something in

Re: What are all these drives for?
I now notice that the hard drive is 'partitioned' - I have read somewhere that this improves performance speed - anything else nice?

Re: What are all these drives for?
Hi Margaret.
Sounds like a recovery partition. The instruction book should tell you what is on the other partition. Mine is in case of total failure of the operating system. When you first access the computer, it should give you the option of making restore disks, which you then keep in a safe place. From them you can restore the computer back to the way it was when you bought it. When you boot up, does it say any thing like press F10 to restore, from then on it can get a bit complicated. Partitions dont have any effect on performance, I partitioned my laptop into two, one is for DOS6, the other has xp. Retlaw Quote:

Re: What are all these drives for?
I have noticed a new item on the-
Start Menu -All Programmes - Accessories - System Tools -Backup I never had that before - so it is probably just as you say. Now I have got it up and running I had better read more about it. Thanks Retlaw forum wont let me give you karma because I gave you some recently re fire alarms |
Re: What are all these drives for?
Hi Margaret.
That backup you found under system tools is not the one I refered to, that is to make backups of your work to CD or DVD DO NOT try to do any thing with the other partition until u find out from the instruction book what its for, any way backing up to another partition on the same drive is useless, if the drive motor packs up. Retlaw PS. You say forum wont let me give you karma. Sorry but I don't know what that is, or where it is, seen it mention on some threads but still no wiser. Quote:

Re: What are all these drives for?
partitioning doesn´t speed up teh PC, it can be useful to seperate your data from the OS so when you need to rebuild Windows there is no risk of it wiping all your data when it decides it needs to format the partition

Re: What are all these drives for?
Before I got this new Pc I had a Pc with a floppy disc drive A and used to back up any valuable info onto a floppy which could be loaded into my 'back up PC' which was an old dell laptop.
I did this in case of a system crash so that my financial info could be loaded into a backup pc to enable me to have continued control of my finances. I no longer have an A drive for floppies, but still need to back up my financial pages/documents to safeguard against a system crash. Would a flash memory stick do for me what a floppy used to do? I appreciate that I could not load it into my old (now 'back up') PC but it would be ready to load into my repaired new pc after any crash which may occur. Have I understood how this 'flash drive' may be useful to me? Re: What are all these drives for?
A flash drive/usb stick does the same as a floppy disk.... and it may be possible to put a card into your laptop so it can take a usb stick.

Re: What are all these drives for?
Will do the same job but hold a hell of a lot more data
You would be able to use it on your old PC if it had usb ports |
Re: What are all these drives for?
