Re: No sound
janet.... slap. lol :p
Thanks K.S.H I dont know what my sound card is. Oh the pain! |
Re: No sound
Have you a sound card fitted or is it onboard?
right click my computer, properties, hardware, device manager. look for sound, expand it and see if there is a yellow exclamation mark next to anything. Right click over it and select update driver, if you got a cd with the soundcard put that in, if not try windows drivers |

I looked under properties on my computer and found Avance AC'97 Audio. I don't have a CD for that to reinstall it.
See the attachment. |

Thanks mick for the CD and Bazf for the link .
I've now installed the drivers for AC97 but still no joy. Looks like it's going to have to go the repairers. Oh dear, the pain of it all. I keep getting the error box. I also reinstalled Windows Media Player to see if that would sort it. |
Re: No sound
Len, start, control panel, sound, volume. The mute has no tick in it has it?
Also try start, control panel, sound, audio and try changing your default devices. did you determine if you had a sound card or is it built in your motherboard? |
Re: No sound
Len funny enough the software i gave you on sunday came from the same site that Bazf has given.

Ya, I thought so.lol
I don't know if I have a sound card or an inbuilt one. I'll tell you what, When I run Microsoft CD Player it works fine. I have sound with that no problem so the sound cards ok, I think. See the attachment I've included, It tells me that an other program may be using it. I did have QuickTime installed, so I have uninstalled it to see if that makes a difference but it didn't. |
Re: No sound
Also check your default player I know its a ditzy question but something Ive overlooked in the past.

Good question. How do I do that? I bet it turns out to be something very simple at the end of the day.
I've been looking through my start up menu to see if there is something being turn on when it shouldn't. But unable to see any thing obvious. |
Re: No sound
Is it only windows media player you are having trouble with?

Re: No sound
Thanks everyone for your help.
I now have sound again. I ended up taking it to the repair shop in Rishton (use-it) I was having problems installing windows XP it kept hanging due to some other software conflicting with it. I was on the phone with a Microsoft engineer for 3hrs trying to sort the problem. It was decided the best thing to do was dump everything, have it flattened and start from scratch but I didn’t have the original windows 98 disc to perform that, so I took it back to the place where I bought it from and they did it for me. As a consequence I got my sound back. There wasn’t a problem with the sound card, thank God. It must have been some doggy software. This all started after I picked up a worm from an e-mail I opened. |
