SSD fastness....
 

I've now spent a week running my laptop from an SSD drive instead of a normal hard drive... The difference is pretty much amazing. It used to be that RAM was the best upgrade on a computer, I would now say that adding an SSD is probably the best way to speed up your computer. Especially if your on a laptop.
I'm not a benchmark and numbers person, but in general usage I am never waiting more than a second for a program to open or run, bootups are very speedy and opening and closing virtual machines is very quick indeed. The whole system feels much more responsive.

Anyone else took the plunge and gone to SSD?

Just been looking for a netbook for the wifey and SSD is one of the things to consider, thanks for the info.

My old computer (in which the hard drive packed up), could it be restored to use with one of these drives.

I have the original instalation disks which had to be created onto cdrom the day you switched on, it creates a separate restore partition, then installs XP, would it make any difference if the drive capacities were different, would it recognise the mother board.
The computer I replaced it with was an advent with vista, it was crap, took it back and had vista removed and XP installed it took them hours finding all the drivers for the mother board.

I doubt it would the worth the expense of an SSD on an old computer. Normal hard drives are cheap if you want to repair your PC.

Yes but the idea of them never failing, I've had several hard drives go in the past 20 years, luckily I've always backed things up every night, before switch off.

Trouble is with revival with a new hard drive, would'nt it need the same capacity to be able to use the restore disks I made, when I first bought it.

they can still fail and only have a finite number of read/write cycles. These aree still a technology that is in its infancy.


As Neil says, use a normal disk if you really want to repair it but TBH its probbaly not worth it.

I definately wouldn't trust an ssd to be failsafe. I still maintain 2 images on normal hard drives just in case. If your a power user of the pc though, you will love the performance of an ssd.
