naffed pc

i can't get online at all on my pc(on mi dads now), it loads up fine, takes me to my desktop fine but when i come to open mozilla nothing happens, all i get is a blank page, nothing loads....i appear to have several trojans too and loads of other stuff, do i need to wipe my pc? if i do, how do i do it?

:(

Re: naffed pc

Either wipe it and start again or run some good antivirus on it....

Try clearing out all your web brosing history and cookies too, this may help...

As a rule, I always save everything and anything onto an external hardrive, and rebuild my laptop every 2 months, keeps it tippytop and free of suspect rubbish....

Hope this helps
Cheers

Re: naffed pc

what are you doing to get loads of trojans? They dont appear for no reason. Perhaps a dodgy method of downloading? Like anykind of kazza program? Limewire ETC Some dodgy webpages can drop them on you're pc if you have been either looking at porn or trying to download cracks and serials/keygens

Bob97531 16-10-2009 12:07

Re: naffed pc

Trojans = lots of dodgy surfing....

You need to be more careful !!! ;)

Bob97531 16-10-2009 12:08

Re: naffed pc

Or as you say "downloading" ;)

Re: naffed pc

yeah bob hehe. Some triojans just drop on ur pc whislt browsing. Others built into dodgy exe's :)

Re: naffed pc

thanx you two, a couple of weeks ago i was having a lot of trouble with pop-ups, that could have had something to do with it....i still havent got my pc sorted, its driving me mad, had to TRY and back up all my files today, that was a task and a half

MargaretR 16-10-2009 18:24

Re: naffed pc

I recently had a problem with Firefox whereby only the border of window was visible showing the desk top where the page should have been.
Is yours like that?
I tried reinstall, system restore and several other remedies.
I thought that I would have to resort to using Internet Explorer again, and then by pure fluke-
I clicked on the maximise/minimise button at top right and it cured it

Re: naffed pc

first thing to do Flashy is look to see if you have an internet connection..
go to START-CONTROL PANEL-NETWORK AND SHARING or INTERNET CONNECTIONS...if it says you have a connection click repair connection.
if you are using a wireless dongle then the dongle could be knackered.

Bob97531 16-10-2009 23:27

Re: naffed pc

If there was no connection it would give an error, the fact that the browser loads would, to me, mean that the connection is there but the homepage is corrupt.... or something equally sinister, to be fair you could try re-installing your web browser but for me, if its infected with anything, I personally would back up and rebuild the machine, protect properly and then pop your stuff back on there....

Its like crashing your car, its never quite the same driving it afterwards, it may look lovely again but will never have the same protection.....

Cheers
Lee

Re: naffed pc

My problem detailed at post #8, had no relevance to trojans or viruses.
I update and scan with AVG daily, I don't get them

Bob97531 16-10-2009 23:50

Re: naffed pc

As you should too ;)

However, as the OP has already mentioned having several trojans etc, it would be my advice to wipe clean and start a fresh rather than just patching up if you will...

Cheers
Lee

Re: naffed pc

Whats the point in backing a system up thats full of viruses you will only back the virus up as well and be back to square one after re-installing

Neil 17-10-2009 07:27

Re: naffed pc

You should be ok backing up pictures and other files that can not contain a virus though.

Shaz, is it just Firefox, if you try IE does that work?

Neil 17-10-2009 07:29

Re: naffed pc

What you really need Shaz is to stop using Windows and switch to Linux instead ;)

I'm not denying that we have had words in the past, but do you have ANY proof that someone such as entwisi would be put off by having bad words? If so he's not the man that I know.

Royboy hasn't been on, for a week or so, could that be the result of 'bad words' and blame it on me, or is it simply that he is on holiday?

Back up as in take your piccies off and whatnot as mentioned, not back up the system, my apologies, I should of explained that clearer....

You can be trying stuff for ages and it may eventually get it up and running but trust me, start again and be more careful this time, always kkep AV up to date, make the most of windows updates and stop surfing "interesting" sites late on !!!

Or if you must then choose some decent ones !!! ;)

I can take a look at it for you but will charge, I would have no way of knowing how much if you want it "restoring" if you want it "rebuilding" it would take a day.

I work as a Technical Consultant for the government and have done for 13yrs now, my advice is not guess work, its the quickest, most reliable way forward.

Cheers

I have done some uninstalling of Microsoft Netframework updates

You did not need to do all that, read this Firefox Foils Microsoft's Security Hole - PC World

I got that pop up notification from Firefox and did the disabling bit it recommended, but then decided that ridding my PC of the Microsoft junk that had installed itself, and which I don't use, may well improve performance.
....and it felt good to do it:D

Neil 19-10-2009 06:56

Re: naffed pc

Are you sure you don't use the .net framework though?
Turning off auto updates is ok but you should set it to tell you when updates are available and ask you if you want to install them. That way you can decide if you install the update and are informed as soon as they available.

Restless 19-10-2009 07:05

Re: naffed pc

thing is you need net framework for some programs to function

Unless you need to recover stuff in which case you will need to have recovery software.
