Another head scratcher

For the 3rd time this month I've gone out for a couple of hours and left this computer switched on, then when I get home & try to get on Accy Web, Face Book, Blackburn 247 or the Great War Forum, I cannot access the sites until I have signed in and entered my pass words again. It doesn't happen at any other time. Nobody else has access to it or can use it because I switch to a blank channel and turn the monitor off.

Don`t they log you off after a certain time of inactivity?

When you log in, do you have the "remember me" box ticked?

No, there is one site I only visit once a month, and I've never been logged of from that, sometimes I only visit the Great War Forum every other day, and never been logged off by them. This problem has happened 3 times in the past 19 days.

What browser & operating system are you using?
What do you mean by switch to a blank channel?

DOS6, WINXP, WIN 7. 3 computers, one keyboard, one monitor, 4 channel switch box that allows me to switch from one computer to the another when I want, but thats got nowt to do with it, sometimes one computer is not switch on for a couple of days but the log in & pass words remain intact.
It has hapened before but only when a site has upgraded or been off line, couple of times, thats happened with Ancestry, and several times with Blackburn 247, but he's always fiddling with it.

these could be resetting things so you have to login again

There have been changes to my Email account since I was hacked last week, I have to log in every day now, there is no box to keep me logged in, which to be honest is fine by me.

I see, KVM switch and you switch to a number with no PC attached so blank screen on monitor, as you say, nowt to do with it.
Neil & Mick have asked the next questions I was going to ask so here`s a few more.
Is it the WIN 7 computer?
Which browser are you using?
Do you leave a browser window open when you leave the PC?
Is a System Restore out of the question?

Not that I know of, but if it did that I would have to log on to every site every time I went there.

No its the XP IEplore, no I dont leave the browser open I always close it when not in use. I don't use the WIN 7 much but it never loses its log in passwords. Never tried System Restore just retyped in name & password

Re: Another head scratcher

Have u checked power options? Is your computer going into hibernation?

You only have to enter your passwords once press save on 7. Reinstall you have to do them all again but otherwise you shouldn't have to. #1 rule to remember is NEVER use IE most experienced people will tell you it sucks. I prefer Google chrome. I login with my email on first install on a new PC. It remembers most user names from other computers and you only have to enter your password once. There is also a plugin for Firefox that does the same.

Windows 8 saves stuff to the cloud I think. Might be an option over 7 but you might want to bang your head against the wall for a while

I don't allow updates, they never really tell you what they are for, I use malwarebytes to protect the computer

Updates for xp are essential. Totally nuts to me that you don't install them :)

Learn to stop using system restore as a solution. Not so good for your computer as most think

Do you only use Malwarebytes, not good protection for most viruses.

Never had a problem with system restore, so long as you don`t go too far back. A month or two should be fine to check if it did it back then. Can undo it afterwards if it`s uninstalled a lot of programs. ( put any files you don`t want touching into My Documents ).

But probably best solution has already been suggested, ditch IE and get something else. I`ve never used Chrome, there was a thread on here not long ago where someone was having problems with it. There`s also Safari, Firefox etc.

I've tried those programs & ditched them, they would not transfer my favourites had to manually write a new favourites list, Firefox was the worst for that tried it twice and got fed up with it.

I very seldom have to use system restore, what exactly are those windows updates, a load of numbers means nothing to me, and several people on this site have had problems after windows updates.

They are usually security updates, with a hidden check to make sure you aren`t using a dodgy copy.

Do think it difficult to help a person that won't be helped by basic recommendations, if he really, really, wanted advice, he would take it, (long ago, in the years gone by he could have had help putting everything on one P.C. (Not me)), but carries on with a system that he admits isn't easy to use or easily transferred to the useful.

Sorry Less but I had been using WordStar 5 - 6 since they first came out and, WS6 does everything I need you can see what font you are using in a blue box on screen, not in a tiny little slot at the top of the screen, which you hope to christ hasn't changed when you don't want it too, by the time all these fancy wordprocessors came along I already had 1000's of hours work in WS6. Serveral members of the WordStar users group have made suggestions of programs that are compatable with my work, I've tried them, the last one was Open Office, one file of 65 pages was changed to 137 pages of mostly jumble.
But that computer with all my Pals files & Accrington's Heroes on has never been connected to the internet, so it can't be infected, or affected by hackers or giil bates's mob.

That, is possibly the saddest thing to do with any of this, all those years of work you've put in and not sharing it.
I know from the past you don't want people stealing your work, but just think how much of an asset it could be if you did allow other's to see it?

I wasn't really apologising, and the original question had nowt to do with my work on the Pals or Accringtons Heroes, can't understand why you brought up that bit, the query was regarding an anomaly on WIN XP and the internet.
I'm not averse to change, but I don't have enough time left on this earth to try and change millions of bytes of info to a new system, I've been dodgng coffins a lot longer than Cashy.

And does this favourites list have 10.0000 entries. I dunno. I can see your point. Use chrome = enter them once and never enter them again(signed into a google account) If your computer dies. You lose them permanently and have to add them all again manually without a guide of another program....

For all that research I wouldn't be happy storing it on one drive. A setup with raid enabled would be a good choice. Two hard drives clone to make one so if you have a failed HD there is no loss of data. Then I would have the data backed up on an external HD(that I hardly ever use) as a just in case

For important data at work, we have one of these.
Netgear RND2000 v2 ReadyNAS Duo 2-Bay (no disks) NAS.. | Ebuyer.com
Two hard drives ( not included ), mirrored RAID. Can also be set to back up at regular intervals automatically. Might be difficult to set up on DOS though.

Tha trying to teach thi grandmother to suck eggs.
Every thing is backed up every day with out fail to a pen drive, then every other day to an external hard drive & weekly to a note book.
What the eck is raid and does it work in DOS.
But all that has nowt to do with my original problem, why just lately I keep gettin logged off from some websites, after I've been out and left this the computer on, no settings have been changed. It doesn't happen when the computers switched off over night,

Asked this in an earlier post, what version Internet Explorer are you using? If an old version, try updating it.

Mirrored RAID, is two hard drives working together, whatever gets written to one hard drive, also gets written to the second. If one drive dies, the data is still on the second drive.

edit: gpick explained it... but underlying was a simple message. Its a better option for backing up important info such as what you are doing... I would hate to see you lose it... but you have a few backups.... that at least is good.

These NAS they plug into your router via ethernet and you send files over your network to it. most of them are raid capable.

Raid simplified(hopefully)

You have two hard drives both of them are 2TB. When you Raid them your computer reads those two drives as one drive. So it shows up as 1TB. So all the data written to the drive is in fact written twice. So if you have a failure in one drive there is no loss of data. Of course not 100% foolproof. But for such delicate work it should be for your main backup. If you had one.

Yeah. Im just a silly nerd. I get carried away.

When you come back to your pc after this time has passed. Is the screen black and it takes several seconds or minutes for the pc to come back to life?

If so I am guessing Hibernation mode in combo with crap internet explorer is causing this. I always turn it off. On XP, Vista, 7 or 8.... Whatever Doze product I am using.... It has been ages since I bothered to use XP so this video explains how to turn it off(if indeed it is on in the first place)

Don't worry about being a classed as acomputer nerd, I get called a WW1 nerd, but the laugh is on them when they need help.
The nearer it gets to 1914 - 1916 the more queries I've been getting, through Ossy Mills, Haworth Art Gallery & Accy Library

As for the other servers like Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Mozilla, and few more obscure ones, they all have faults that are far worse than any I've encountered on IE, so I guess I'll just have to put up with it, the passwords are easy to remember.
Thanks for your help.

You could try updating to 9. Look in windows update, you don`t have to download all the updates if you don`t want to ( I would ), just untick the ones you don`t want.:)

Its funny how AW hasn't changed (except for upgrades) since I joined 8 years ago and is still thriving and going strong, yet others have dropped of or disappeared because of constant tinkering, if it ain't broke don't fix it

your moderators say that i am using 2 or more names on here, let me clarify something as ALAN7554 is banned from going on here i decided to use a new name and re new my membership hence kuriburi boy but you wont let me on with that one,so i tried the resident 1963 and you said no,reason SPAMMING there is no proper reason to stop me from re applying to become a member on here, unless you do discriminate against people who live in thailand, your stupid rules are a waste of time and i will send you another virus and get you off the air for a few days, the last one worked i have many friends over here who will gladly muck your website up. I WILL BE BACK ON HERE SHORTLY UNDER A NEW NAME AND A NEW I.PP. ADDRESS HA HA HA

That's because it's easier to fall into the hole a cover was protecting than have to dig one for himself.

Re: Another head scratcher

But I am guessing he wasn't hiding it via a proxy anyway. I am guessing its definitely him. The info will state its sent from Thailand and also what isp. Why would he hide it. Like Glitter he obviously thinks of himself as untouchable now

I don`t know who it is you are reffering to, but someone from around here could go through a proxy and make it look like they were in Tailand, or anywhere they wanted.
