Computer been knocked over
Not sure if this is the right place to ask but, my desktop computer has been knocked from its shelf, height of about 1ft or so, and following the fall it went to the blue screen, message on it stated 'configuring setup', it was switched off after seeming 'stuck' on this screen.
Now it isn't registering the keyboard or mouse. I have thought to take it apart and remove all components, in case something has been knocked loose? But I'm no expert. Can anybody help? I'll send it off for repair if necessary just thought it may be worth asking here. :) |

Sounds like you need a computer guru

Re: Computer been knocked over
If you feel confident doing it, re-seating everything is a good start. Be aware though, computer components are static sensitive, you should really ground yourself first.

Is it the windows blue screen or Bios blue screen.
Bios might look like this - |

Sorry just noted your second reply. It isn't that one, a windows one. The message is no longer there since getting it put back on. Quote:
This really wasn't my fault though for a change :) |

Something like this - Antistatic wrist strap - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/anti-stati...ng-cable-zt91y You fasten it to your wrist, then connect to something that is earthed. Quote:

Re: Computer been knocked over
I know, I was only joking ( I don't actually own any wellies)! That's good to know though!
No it isn't working, still got the blue screen of death :( the message is no longer there though, It's a blank screen with a HDML message noting 'No Signal', now. About 30 seconds ago, after I undid the tower and made sure things were attached properly, it looked as if it was okay. I had a message prompting a reboot, which I have done, and then back to this screen! |
Re: Computer been knocked over
*Update* windows screen back on, startup repair screen.
('Startup repair is checking your computer for problems. If problems are fund startup repair will fix them automatically. Start your computer to repair') Is this sounding promising? :) |

Why type of keyboard, wireless or wired? If wired is it USB? Which things did you check were attached? Did you check the RAM and Video Card? |

Is the keyboard working again? |

I checked the vid card, and yes It's a USB keyboard. Quote:
Thanks so much for your help gpick, really appreciated. It was my dog that caused this issue... It was knocked over when she, for some unknown reason, decided to suddenly dart under the desk. She's never been interested in the desk before, I have no idea why she did this and then I heard this crash... I was about to make her into a rather nice rug :D;) |
Re: Computer been knocked over
Oh No you weren't Jen...I know you better than that!
Glad it is working again. I hate it when things go wrong...it always happens when you are skint too. |

I'm still pretty useless though as this thread demonstrates! I admire people (like gpick!) who have the patience to get very good with computers, probably because I find the whole subject of I.T incredibly boring! But each to their own, I wish I didn't-it must be very useful to be good at it! |
Re: Computer been knocked over
Glad it`s sorted itself out.
Pooch needs putting on the naughty step for a while. |

You're right, about money and, when things go wrong it always seems to happen all at once doesn't it. Funnily enough, this computer has only been set up a day,and up until a couple of days before that it had been with a computer repair man, for about 3 months!! Said man had ordered a part for it which took so long to arrive, and then was wrong when it came, he was very good and apologetic, although not his fault, but my t'other half was fed up and very pleased to get it back, and then this happens! I thought he was going to cry! |

Re: Computer been knocked over
yes Jen, you are right ......patience isn't inexhaustible, but pets and children...well they look at you with those big eyes and you forgive them...maybe not right away.......:D
As for mending computers - well, I'm not that brave. I once bought myself a book about fiddling with computers...one of those 'Dummies' books. I looked at it, but that was as far as I got...the book went to the charity shop in one of my rare 'fling outs'. I guess it is best to leave it to those who know what they are doing. |
Re: Computer been knocked over
To be fair, I have used him before and he's always been very good. He said this supplier is one he's used for years and often, he was very annoyed with them and very apologetic, I didn't nag at him because he's always given good service before. I passed it off as 'One of those things' but it was a relief to get it back.
Sod's law that my dog then sends it flying. She was in the naughty corner for definite! She's a strange dog-now and again she'll just randomly go pottering about the room as if looking for something to mess about with! As I said never has she gone under the desk before, though. It's working now so we're both happy, I'd have hated to have had to call the guy up again and tell him this !lol Quote:
As for the book, well, you tried! I'm sure I'd not even understand a book on computing let alone be able to learn from one! |
Re: Computer been knocked over
My problem is the reverse of what has occurred here, something will be working champion and I decide to hoover out the inside or I delete a file that I think I don't need, and before you know it its 3 in the morning and I just managed to get it back performing like it was at 9 in the previous evening. You've got to laugh haven't you,............. or perhaps not

I mean emails stored locally, photos, documents, passwords, licences etc. If you would have lost something important, forever, then it's time to consider your backup options. For most people, a USB stick or external drive is good enough, but maybe that's the basis for another thread. |
Re: Computer been knocked over
Yes.....that is so true.
I lost a lot of stuff when one of my computers decided to commit suicide.....my current computer reminds me weekly to do it...and I always put it off for later. I must do it...NOW! |

There are ways of retrieving lost files, even from formatted drives, not guaranteed to work, but worth a shot.

Re: Computer been knocked over
Bare foot on tiled floor and touch taps before touching components :D

Re: Computer been knocked over
Ah, right. I missed the bit where the lost music was the result of a soft-delete. Must be in another thread, or I'm just being blind in this one.

Re: Computer been knocked over
Doesn`t say how the music was lost, here`s what i was going off
