Laptop problem

My laptop is driving me mad so can someone please help ? When I Google a website it comes up reasonably quickly BUT then I cannot get any where on the site as along the bottom of the screen it says ' ???? is not responding due to a long running script.' It is happening all the time. We did have problems with the broadband which has now been fixed .It was dropping frequently. I have just had a new battery in the laptop and it has had an overall which I thought would rectify the problem but it has made no difference. The broadband is very slow so could that be the reason. Hope one of you clever folk can help before I throw the laptop through the window.:mad::mad:

What browser are you using and is it, flash and java up to date?

Re: Laptop problem

Sorry for the delay in answering you but the Accringtonweb is not responding to a long running script now !!!!! It is Google I'm using. Everything else should be ok because as I said it has only just been checked over and I know the guy who did it so if he says he has done something I can believe him. My son put Windows10 on it a while back and I have to say I have not liked it.

Re: Laptop problem

Haven`t used Chrome but had a similar problem with Firefox that went away after updating Flash and Java although after googling it seems it can also be caused by add-ons not working as they should, you could try temporarily disabling any you have running.

You can check your Java version here - https://www.java.com/en/

And Flash here - https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ (untick the Mcafee box if you don`t want it installed)

Get rid of windows 10 I did. I had all sorts of problems with it

Re: Laptop problem

I also had recent problems with firefox.......followed Gpicks advice and was sorted fairly quickly.

So you didn't get along with Windows 10 Frank?
I was thinking of putting it on my desk top......every time I log off and come back on I get the reminder from Microsoft that I can upgrade to Windows 10.
Now I am having second thoughts.

I've just had my PC in for a system clean up and a small problem sorting out.
He knows it, he built it.
He said 'Shall I install 10 for you while I have it'. I was dreading trying so I said yes.
It took him 2 days to sort out the problems it started. I brought it home on Wednesday, mouse didn't work,no sound, can only print the left hand side of an e mail.
Took it back in, sorted(?) came home, sound on but very quiet, still print problem with e mail, having to use an old Dell mouse.
He's coming here to sort it sometime.
If an expert has these problems what chance have old fogies like me got?

Same with us. I put it on both our LTs, tried it for a couple of weeks and we both decided we didn't like it at all so we reverted back to W7, our original installation.
It does all we want, very familiar with it, don't need anything more.
Same with phones, bought a couple of Android ones, much too complicated as we only need voice and text - OK, the camera is useful, so we dumped the Android ones and went back to basic Nokia. Battery charge life much longer, and provides what we want.

My wife will not part with her basic nokia. All she does is text and very occasionally ring.

running windows 10 no problem now but on first installing I found I had to update and re-install a lot of programmes

Windows10 is great... turn off a bit of the crap and its much better than 8.....

Rowlf do you have a virus killer AVG/AVAST? do a scan...

also try malwarebytes https://www.malwarebytes.org/ and check for malware.. WIN10 is NOT your problem...something else is

Also.. are you using GOOGLE as a browser (EXAMPLE: GOOGLE CHROME) or are you using it to search (EXAMPLE: USING CRAPPY INTERNET EXPLORER AND GOING TO GOOGLE.COM) sorry for what might appear to be stupid questions...

Rob, just out of interest ...which browser and search engine do you use?

I am using Google and yes I do have an anti virus. I did try Chrome and found that better. these last few days I don't seem to be having problems. Thanks everyone for your help.

I think a lot of the problem was the very very slow broadband. It is not very good where I live. I am told by the engineers there is a lot of 'rain' around here.

In the last ten years I have only used Internet Explorer to download another browser. After that it rarely gets used again. For a while the silverlight based games(rare, but I was playing a spectrum game that was made into a web-based mulplayergame for quite a while) and silerlight video sources was an issue and the odd time IE would get a look in(because microsoft dont(didnt) allow silverlight to be used in another browser)

I use both Chome & Firefox. Chrome for general browsing & for things I like to do on the move. I sign into Chrome both on my phone and PC so the links and history is linked.

Firefox for battlelog(battlefield 4) because its not supported in chrome anymore & anything that requires a bit more security/privacy

GOOGLE for search engine. Back in the day when they first surfaced, they changed the search engine for ever. No other came close.

UBLOCK ORIGIN... an extension that works on both chome and firefox.... A MUST!

Could he have said "gain" rather than "rain"?

IE gets a bit over zealous when scripts are running in pages.

Open Internet Explorer and press ok to all script error messages if there are any.
1.Go to the Tools Menu and click Internet Options.
2.Click on the Advanced tab at the top of the Internet Options window.
3.Under Settings, scroll down to the Browsing section andcheck the 3rd (Disable script debugging (Internet Explorer)) and4th (Disable script debugging (other)) items, and uncheck the 5th item ("Display a notification about every script error").

Just looked and all my settings are as you say they should be. Thanks anyway.

I have had the need to resort to using IE on an odd occasion, but I don't much like it anymore......recently I needed to use a program for editing patterns for my cardmaking(Canvas)...it is unsupported by firefox so i think that I might need to use Chrome for periodic use.

Yes, it updates automatically.....but the program (called Canvas)that I want to use is not supported by Firefox......it is a Brother editing program.....it allows me to edit and download shapes for my cutting machine.
I can edit in the machine, but the screen is tiny so it is not easy to do.
I won't use IE to access the program.....I will probably use Chrome.
I am not fully up to speed with this machine yet, so it is something that is firmly in the future.

recently had a cricut cutting machine come to the house and i cant move for flipping projects of some sort....

have you tried sure cuts a lot

im not sure exactly what it does i just get asked for a program and i get it but apparently its brilliant for cutting machines

I have a Brother Scan'n' Cut machine.....but I am still getting used to it.
Yes, it can be like that in our house too.....projects galore on the go...But they tend just to be in our back bedroom.

Margaret Pilkington 10-02-2016 19:21

Re: Laptop problem

Just had a look at the 'surecutsalot'.....not sure that this would be compatible with my machine.....besides the 'canvas' program is free. You have to get an account, but once you have, there are loads of projects to look at and you can edit shapes and fonts that are in the machine.....make the bigger, or smaller and access new shapes.
I still use my cutting dies as these emboss the cut too...making it look less flat.

I've experienced that too when I upgraded to Windows 10. I had to bring to the repair coz it crashed several times. The technician told me to just use windows 8.1. Windows 10 has so many unfixed issues yet. I have another laptop with windows 10 as default OS and also experiencing the same thing.

Re: Laptop problem

I had problems with W10 when I downloaded it and so reverted back after a couple of weeks. Some time later had a real problem and decided that I needed a complete overhaul. The friend that did the reload now only uses W10 - from disc. He then set it up to meet my requirements and it has been brilliant ever since. I have not experienced any problems at all after the disc loading of W10.

Re: Laptop problem

The script errors are nothing to do with Windows 10, I get them on Windows 7, it`s because Java and/or flash on your system needs updating.

I am still on W10 and not having problems while using Chrome but not so good with Internet Explorer.
