Re: buggered pc

it might be worth someone checking out the power pack isn't faulty if it keeps shutting off!

Hope you get it sorted soon and cheaply too:)

Re: buggered pc

cheers hr....someone said that to me yesterday, i havent got a clue though lol at this rate its gonna end up out the naffin window :D

Re: buggered pc

A bit more info would help. Does Windows load? how far does it get before it shuts down? how are you SURE there isn't a virus at work?

harwood red 26-01-2007 13:58

Re: buggered pc

actually come to think of it, had similar problem with mine and it ended up something to do with the motherboard being faulty, luckily it was under warranty so they came and fixed it.

Get chav to look at it, he's pretty good at taking comps apart but he might take a while to put it back together again  :p ;)

Re: buggered pc

Have you checked for something really basic and simple like is your plug in the socket firmly? Is the plug firmly wired? If a wire works loose that could simply be cutting off the electrical supply.

Heatsink could be blocked with dust and making processor overheat, always look at the easy options 1st :)

sometimes windows loads and sometimes it goes off before its got to that stage, it can go off within seconds of me turning it on, then sometimes it can stay on for half an hour

Re: Faulty pc

go into bios settings and look under where it says cpu temp

leave it running for a few mins and keep an eye on teh temperature while you are still in the bios screen ( do not boot windows)

post back your results in celicius and if possible the size of your processor like athelon 2200 for example

if your starting to hit near 40%c and above then its most likely your cpu/processor not been cooled down enough and a simple cpu fan exchange may be all u need

or your power supply is faulty and not getting enough power to the cpu fan to make it spin fast enough to cool down

thats my thoughts anyway

entwisi 26-01-2007 19:07

Re: Faulty pc

40 degrees C is cool even for an athlon, modern CPUs run up to 85 degrees

it could be a crack on teh motherboard, have you fitted anything new recently? Memory/gfx card etc?

Unfortunately these type of problems can be a real pain to resolve and usually need swapping out of components to find the faulty one.

Mancie 26-01-2007 19:29

Re: Faulty pc

my cpu was getting up to 65+ degrees and it would shut down (but I seem to remember setting a limit in bios)the PC would not restart until it had cooled down. I found playing vids or tunes would really heat it up....downloaded something that told me my cpu fan was 0 zero! but if yours cuts out after a few seconds?

flashy 26-01-2007 20:17

could someone please translate the last 3 posts for me??

This maybe to late to be any help but my yesterday my PC started closing down a couple of minutes after restarting... I looked in task manager (ctrl+alt+delete) checked performance and for some reason the cpu was running at 100% usage !... did a system restore to earlier date and now its OK... don't know why it was running at 100% ...I was not using any applications.

Mine is misbehaving too now. Thought it was sorted but it's only lulled me into a false sense of security and then something else goes kaput!

accymel 12-02-2007 17:19

Re: Faulty pc

Funny u should say that willow mine was playing up earlier for some very unknown reason that kicked AV off & windows - fine now

Tinkerbelle 12-02-2007 17:25

Re: Faulty pc

Mines been switching itself off recently for no reason too but my hard drive is nearly full that's what I've been putting it down to.

Earlier on all the links in my favourites stopped working then I got an error page on accyweb, had to re-boot the full lot :(

Neil 12-02-2007 17:26

Re: Faulty pc

You have all just proved how unreliable PC's really are :D

It is usually software problems that people have, but flashy's sounds like a hardware fault. Have you tried what Chav said yet about watching the CPU temp in the BIOS?

When it shuts down what does it do? Does it just instantly switch off?

entwisi 12-02-2007 20:36

Re: Faulty pc

I would say that generally teh hardware is actually quite reliable, the OS that you all seem to like to run seems to be a much greater problem. :D

I get your point entwisi...but for most people the first PC they saw/bought would have had windows..I mean almost brought up on windows and not inclined to start experimenting with any other OS.

entwisi 12-02-2007 20:50

Re: Faulty pc

doesn't make it right though does it.

Linux is a friend you just haven't met yet! :D

Re: Faulty pc

well i'm convinced now that mine only turns itself off when the heatings on.....*wonders if her pc was made by eskimo's*

Mancie 12-02-2007 21:26

Re: Faulty pc

well Flashy... chav and entwisi told you what you should do:

go into bios settings and look under where it says cpu temp
leave it running for a few mins and keep an eye on teh temperature while you are still in the bios screen ( do not boot windows)
if your starting to hit near 40%c and above then its most likely your cpu/processor not been cooled down enough and a simple cpu fan exchange may be all u need

it could be a crack on teh motherboard, have you fitted anything new recently? Memory/gfx card etc?

simple eh! :D
