Notebook Card
I have recently bought a Belkin Wireless "G" Notebook Card for my laptop. However the range seems to be inadequate for my needs. Can anybody suggest a better card that has a much greater range. The current card sometimes picks up my connection, but only for a minute or so.

Re: Notebook Card
how far is the router, it also depends on how many/how thick the walls are. You cold try moving the router to a more central point in the building. alternatively you can run a cable to a closer point and use a repeater/wireless accesspoint(Which isn't a router, its just a wireless bit that passes the connection back to teh router via teh cable)
Unfortunately the cards all use a standard power level, to boost this is actually illegal(although some cards can be 'tweaked' its not good for the lifespan of the card.) |
Re: Notebook Card
Unfortunately moving the router isn't an option. The router is situated in the office which is in the attic, & I need my laptop to access the internet on the ground floor.

Re: Notebook Card
so you need a repeater station on teh first/middle floor.
You can get boxes that just repeat any available wireless signals or if you can, run a cable and then use a wap box. |
Re: Notebook Card
I was hoping that I could just get a new card that could reach a greater distance.

Re: Notebook Card
Nope, sorry, you may get lucky and find one that just gets you a connection but its unlikely and not something I'd like to guarantee, teh repeater boxes aren't that dear, I'll have a shufty for some links for you when I get a minute

Re: Notebook Card
OK, buy this http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/sto...ory_oid=-24988
£40 and then follow this http://linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/...i=&p_topview=1 you plug the WAP54 in somewhere halfway between the router and where you want to use your laptop, you can try moving it closer to each in turn to see how it affects signal/transfer speeds if you like or if it works fine where you first choose then leave it alone |
Re: Notebook Card
Magic. Thanks Ian.
