pc salesmans white lies

:mad:I went to by a new pc for my grandaughter, but did not want windows vista, as we all know it is bad news, the salesman said it is ok now they have sorted it, on explaining my requirements being disabled I did not want any hassle at home, "will it work with my 'orange livebox running 2 other pcs on windows xp" answer "certainly, sir buy this that and the other, plug in and away you go"3 days later after countless phone calls to the 'magic ' helpline the truth emerges he the salesman told you a white lie. £500 quid for a bag of crap that st peter could not make work I am lumbered with it if anyone has not guesed the stores name, it ends in world, you have been warned, if you want the liars name pm me by all means.

Ian has asked me to post this reply for him as he isn't to well at the moment. The point he was trying to get across is that these sales people should not get away with pulling tricks like that, Ian is no expert on computers but he did ask all the relevant questions and recieved positive replies back from the salesman. Now picture it a young girl desperate for a pc of her own and what do you get? A grand-dad who is the best thing since sliced bread when he buys said computer. The same grand-dad now looks like the devil himself because the advice he was given is incorrect. How many more kids have been disappointed in the same way? We will be getting in touch with people who sold it to us and shall be demanding our money back.

As Entwisi has already said, under the Sale of Goods Act 1979, goods have to be as described when purchased.

Clearly this isn't the case, and you are entitled to a full refund.

I think you should make a fuss, and you should be compensated.

I know you both have a lot on your plate, but good luck.:)

If you had a copy of the link in your history I'd like to see it as this is something that has affected quite a few people. I last looked for solutions a few weeks ago and there was nothing forthcoming even from Microsoft Technet

Can't really tell you anymore than what I have done sorry. The engineer who sorted it for us spent all weekend looking for the solution and luckily for us he got there in the end, it saved us the hassle of taking the damm thing back. :D

I'd have still taken it back TBH, Vista is quite simply a stinking great pile of poo (this is of course my humble opinion)

I'm actually trying my best to stay away from helping people with Vista problems because quite often there isn't a solution. On top of that it runs like a dog on even quite decent hardware.

If we hadn't got it sorted it would have gone back, of that you can be sure. As you know Ian shares your opinions on Vista but now we are up and running we will manage. As it is it is ruuning alongside two other computers which are running on XP from the same Orange Live Box with no problems so we are quite happy with the outcome.;)

Last time we went there with quite a simple request (can't remember what it was now offhand but nothing earth shattering) the guy looked at us like we were speaking Japanese.

This has been a nightmare, would never go there again!! Got it sorted eventually but if the sales people had been honest problem would not have happened in the first place!!

I used to enjoy putting customers right when I was in PC world browsing and overheard a sales chap telling blooming great woppers. I have no problem with PC world from a price perspective, quite often their special offers are a very cheap way of buying a decent PC. They also offer a high street prescence where there is very little choice. The issue I have is that they rarely offer the right advice to people mainly due to staff who look forward to having half a clue one day.

That is just the point though the staff should know what they are talking about, just wish you'd been browsing when Ian went for ours:D

It is realy very good is vista Ian it is knowing how to configure it when you are sold it, it cost me £150 to find out. Fisrst rule do not try to install it 'wireless' do it via Earthanet connection. When you have an internet connection then run the security usually Norton free of charge with package, then the secret is sit there for about 2 hours and manualy 'update the windows vista programmes as these are about6 months behind, between manufacture and sale date, hence the problems. This done then set it to auto update at a time you do not usually use it. If you want to run it wireless you will in most cases have to update the wireless livebox to tell it it is different ,definitely if its an orange livebox. Now the tricky bit, if you want to run windows xp on one or two pcs and a vista pc it is the live box again that is the problem not vista. My engineer spent all weekend finding a 'link code to install after the webkey is installed this may only apply to orange liveboxes other more up to date ones may be ok I do not know. Oe thing I do know is that if you do not manually updaye the pc when you get online you will allways be 6 to 12 months behind. The dual core and graphics are far better than xp, the villains are the retailers who should update them before selling them! Iam now converted, but a £150 quid out of pocket thank's to a lying saleseman at PC World's Blackburn branch. Wat about some compensation PC World? ps do not try to run or download 'old software it will not let you, old games are the worst offenders. I hope that is of s0me help to anyone struggling with vista it realy is ok when you get it right. regards all Ian( Ianto. W.)

Re: pc salesmans white lies

This is typical of places like PC World and doesn't surprise me in the least. Exactly why I build all my computers myself and pay half of what they would charge at places like that. Obviously everyone can't build computers, but if you know anyone that knows about basic technology, it isn't hard, I did it using trial and error. I think people should also beware of smaller places too, like independent shops. A good percentage of those will rob (or try to rob) you too, I know first hand. This isn't to say they are all like that, I just say beware, it isn't just big companies that rob or misguide people. It's no surprise that you found a solution either. I can even run a few XP drivers on Vista, requiring I tweak it a little. I was told that I wouldn't be able to get my entire studio (including all the hardware) to run on vista. The fact is it does, although it ain't the best at the moment. It's not vista's fault in my case, it's Creative/E-MUs fault; they promised Vista drivers a long time ago and they didn't deilver. I like Vista, I just don't like Vista support, it's virtually non-existent with a lot of "respected" manufacturers, and solutions/workarounds are only just workable. In a year It will be no different to XP though, the OS does remind me of XP a lot, just an advanced version, the XP fans will come round once all the support from hardware and software manufacturers is in place. I saw it happen a long time ago.John

Re: pc salesmans white lies

Heh, I do find it amusing. Vista IS rubbish, even Microsoft are admitting that 'not all users will find it suits their needs'

I have a friend who is a heavy Microsoft developer. Even he after trying to defend Vista for the first 6 months has admitted that he finds so many problems with it when doing even mundane things that he hasn't booted it for over a month. In even his opinion its not fit for general consumption yet. Don't get me wrong they will get there in teh end its just not ready YET....

I've just come back from holiday, Can I get my USB Freeview stick to work under Vista? Nope, not a chance. Come back (No Internet access at the camp site) and within 30 mins its up and running under Linux WITH NO SUPPORT FROM THE MANUFACTURER!!!

I'm actually preparing to revert my Windows install to XP as I'm sick of Vista not working. Another example, would it play teh original Thomas teh Tank engine DVD we took with us? Nope, "Windows has detected that copy protection does not allow playback of this DVD on devices with TV out!!!"

PC World burnley appears to be a completely different store. It looks different to Blackburn, the prices are all on products, they had products IN STOCK!!!

They didn't push insurance on us while buying a laptop, simply informed us. Didn't try and lie or deceive us.. i've been there twice in the last few days and me and dad were that impressed he went all way to Burnley to buy a laptop rather than blackburn! Give it a try!
