Nuking my harddrive...

I've managed to get a virus on XP and fiddle too much with ubuntu and mess that as well... also have a half-installed kubuntu on there... somewhere.

Been having fun learning but think it's time to wipe and start again got everything I need to wipe then reinstall xp and ubuntu (this time giving a larger partition to ubuntu while I'm at it).

Only thing is backing up the 60GB of stuff I want to keep, any ideas ? Atm my only real option is using 8GB flash drive to transfer to dad's laptop in about 7 transfers there and back... anyone got a better idea ?

Couple mentioned HERE
Why not transfer direct from PC to laptop and do away with the flash drive?
Best option though - buy another hard drive, never have this trouble again if you mirror your data to it regular - unless both drives go down!

network them? then you aren't going back and forth

use a live CD to start it up so you are sure its clean. You should also check your data to make sure its not been infetced.

alternatively buy a hard disk caddy and put teh disk in that to copy it across.

When you do get it up and running again, use this backup tool, saved me a few times :)

How would I go about networking ubuntu desktop with XP laptop for file-sharing ?

Both are connected to router for internet

Bit tempermental but it works, my PC always sees the laptop but the laptop doesn't always see the PC

or install an FTP server on one or teh other. cerberus is superb for windows, proftpd is good for Linux.

Samba is easy to configure as well.

or if you have sshd running scp
